The KOMPSAT-3 can acquire panchromatic stereo image with 0.7 m spatial resolution, and provides Rational Polynomial Coefficient (RPC). In order to determine ground coordinate using the provides RPC, which include interior-exterior orientation errors, its adjustment is needed by using the Ground Control Point (GCP). Several thousands of national Unified Control Points (UCPs) are established and overall distributed in the country by the Korean National Geographic Information Institute (NGII). UCPs therefore can be easily searched and downloaded by the national-control-point-record-issues system. This paper introduced the point-extraction method and the distance-bearing method to detect of UCPs. As results, the distance-bearing method was better detected through the experiment. RPC adjustment using this method was compared with that by only one UCP and GCPs using GPS. The proposed method was more accurate than the other method in the horizontal. As demonstrated in this paper, the proposed UCPs detection method could be replaced GPS surveying for RPC adjustment.
Soil moisture plays an important role to affect the Earth's radiative energy balance and water cycle. In general, satellite observations are useful for estimating the soil moisture content. Passive microwave satellites have an advantage of direct sensitivity on surface soil moisture. However, their coarse spatial resolutions (10-36 km) are not suitable for regional-scale hydrological applications. Meanwhile, in-situ ground observations of point-based soil moisture content have the disadvantage of spatially discontinuous information. This paper presents an experimental soil moisture retrieval using Sentinel-1 SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) with 10m spatial resolution for cropland in South Korea. We developed a soil moisture retrieval algorithm based on the technique of linear regression and SVR (support vector regression) using the ground observations at five in-situ sites and Sentinel-1 SAR data from April to October in 2015-2017 period. Our results showed the polarization dependency on the different soil sensitivities at backscattered signals, but no polarization dependence on the accuracies. No particular seasonal characteristics of the soil moisture retrieval imply that soil moisture is generally more affected by hydro-meteorology and land surface characteristics than by phenological factors. At the narrower range of incidence angles, the relationship between the backscattered signal and soil moisture content was more distinct because the decreasing surface interference increased the retrieval accuracies under the condition of evenly distributed soil moisture (during the raining period or on the paddy field). We had an overall error estimate of RMSE (root mean square error) of approximately 6.5%. Our soil moisture retrieval algorithm will be improved if the effects of surface roughness, geomorphology, and soil properties would be considered in the future works.
In the case of forest areas, the installation of ground control points (GCPs) and the selection of terrain features, which are one of the unmanned aerial photogrammetry work process, are limited compared to urban areas, and safety problems arise due to non-visible flight due to high forest. To compensate for this problem, the drone equipped with a real time kinematic (RTK) sensor that corrects the position of the drone in real time, and a 3D flight method that fly based on terrain information are being developed. This study suggests to present a method for investigating damage using drones in forest areas. Position accuracy evaluation was performed for three methods: 1) drone mapping through GCP measurement (normal mapping), 2) drone mapping based on topographic data (3D flight mapping), 3) drone mapping using RTK drone (RTK mapping), and all showed an accuracy within 2 cm in the horizontal and within 13 cm in the vertical position. After evaluating the position accuracy, the volume of the landslide area was calculated and the volume values were compared, and all showed similar values. Through this study, the possibility of utilizing 3D flight mapping and RTK mapping in forest areas was confirmed. In the future, it is expected that more effective damage investigations can be conducted if the three methods are appropriately used according to the conditions of area of the disaster.
In this paper, we analyzed the phase change of 5-triangular trihedral comer reflectors by using X-band Ground-Based Synthetic Aperture Radar (GB-SAR) system. Each reflector was set as a stationary target at a different distance from the system. We obtained total 123 full-polarization images during 40 hours continuously at 20 minute interval. Results of SAR interferometric analysis showed phase changes of maximum 2 radians and followed similar pattern with atmospheric data. Through a GB-SAR phase formula that includes refractive index in the air, we performed regression analysis for refractive index as a function of atmospheric humidity, temperature and pressure. As a result, refractive index of air in X-band showed relatively high coefficient of determination with humidity and temperature (0.72 and 0.76 on average, respectively) but not so with pressure (0.34). The refractive index of air in X -band changed by 3.14\;{\times}\;10^{-5}$ during the measuring time with a humidity range of 50% ~ 90% and a temperature range of $-1^{\circ}C$ ~ $9^{\circ}C$. We expect that a total expression of refractive index of air including humidity, temperature and pressure can be calculated when more extensive data would be collected at various atmospheric conditions.

In this present study, we, for the first time, retrieved total column of ozone ($O_3$) and tropospheric ozone vertical profile using the Optimal Estimation (OE) method based on the MAX-DOAS measurement at the Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea. The optical density fitting is carried out using the OE method to calculate ozone columns. The optical density between the MAX-DOAS data obtained by dividing the measured intensities for each viewing elevated angle by those at the zenith angle. The retrieved total columns of the ozone are 375.4 and 412.6 DU in the morning (08:13) and afternoon (17:55) on 23 May, 2017, respectively. In addition, under 10 km altitude, the $O_3$ vertical profile was retrieved with about 5% of retrieval uncertainty. However, above 10 km altitude, the $O_3$ vertical profile retrieval uncertainty was increased (>10%). The spectral fitting errors are 16.8% and 19.1% in the morning and afternoon, respectively. The method suggested in this present study can be useful to measure the total ozone column using the ground-based hyper-spectral UV sensors.

Localized solar irradiance is normally derived from atmospheric transmission influenced by atmospheric composition and conditions of the target area. Specially, for the area with complex coastal lines such as Taean gun, the accurate estimation of solar irradiance requires for in depth analysis of atmospheric transmission characteristics based on the localized vertical profiles of the key atmospheric parameters. Using MODTRAN (MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission) 6, we report a computational study on clear day atmospheric transmission and direct solar irradiance estimation of Taean gun using the data collected from 3 ground stations and radiosonde measurement over 93 clear days in 2018. The MODTRAN estimated direct solar irradiance is compared with the measurement. The results show that the normalized residual mean (NRM) is 0.28 for the temperature based MODTRAN atmospheric model and 0.32 for the pressure based MODTRAN atmospheric model. These values are larger than 0.1~0.2 of the other study and we understand that such difference represents the local atmospheric characteristics of Taean gun. The results also show that NRM tends to increase noticeably in summer as the temperature increases. Such findings from this study can be very useful for estimation and prediction of the atmospheric condition of the local area with complex coastal lines.
In this study, we was measured the radiance reflectance by using multi-spectral image of low resolution camera(LRC) which will be loaded in the multi-purpose satellite(KOMPSAT) to use the data in analyzing water pollution. Also we investigated the possibility of extraction of water quality factors in rivers and water body by using high resolution remote sensing data such as Airborne MSS. Especially, we tried to extract the environmental factors related with eutrophication, and also tried to develop the process technique and the radiance feature of reflectance related with eutrophication. The results were summarized as follows: First, the spectrum of sun's rays which reaches the surface of the earth was consistent with visible rays bands of 0.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$~0.7${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and about 50% of total quantity of radiation were there. And at around 0.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of green spectral band in visible rays bands, the spectrum was highest. Second, as a result of the radiance reflectance Chlorophyll-a represented high spectral reflectance mainly around 0.52${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of green spectral band, and suspended sediments and turbidity represented high spectral reflectance at 0.8${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and at 0.57${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ each. Third, as a result of the water quality analysis by using Airborne MSS, Chlorophyll-a could have a distribution chart when carried out ratio of B3 and BS to B7. And Band 7 was useful for making the distribution chart of suspended sediments. And when we carried out PCA, suspended sediments and turbidity had distributions at PC 1 , PC 4 each similarly to ground truth data. Above results can be changed according to the change of season and time. Therefore, in order to analyze more exactly the environmental factors of water quality by using LRC data, we need to investigate constantly the ground truth data and the radiance feature of reflectance of water body. Afterward in this study, we will constantly analyze the radiance feature of the surface of water in water body by measuring the on-the-spot radiance reflectance and using low resolution satellite image(SeaWiFs). Besides, we will gather the data of water quality analysis in water body and analyze the pattern of water pollution.
This study, multispectral and hyperspectral sensors were utilized to use radiometric cross validation for the purpose of radiometric quality evaluation of a 'KOMPSAT-3'. Images of EO-1 Hyperion and Landsat-8 OLI sensors taken in PICS site were used. 2 sections that have 2 different types of ground coverage respectively were selected as the site of cross validation based on aerial hyperspectral sensor and TOA Reflectance. As a result of comparison between the TOA reflectance figures of KOMPSAT-3, EO-1 Hyperion and CASI-1500, the difference was roughly 4%. It is considered that it satisfies the radiological quality standard when the difference of figure of reflectance in a comparison to the other satellites is found within 5%. The difference in Blue, Green, Red band was approximately 3% as a comparison result of TOA reflectance. However the figure was relatively low in NIR band in a comparison to Landsat-8. It is thought that the relatively low reflectance is because there is a difference of band passes in NIR band of 2 sensors and in a case of KOMPSAT-3 sensor, a section of 940nm, which shows the strong absorption through water vapor, is included in band pass resulting in comparatively low reflectance. To overcome these conditions, more detailed analysis with the application of rescale method as Spectral Bandwidth Adjustment Factor (SBAF) is required.
Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) provides air temperature (Tair) and dew point temperature (Tdew) profiles at a spatial resolution of 5 km. New Collection 6 (C006) MODIS07_L2 atmospheric profile product has been produced since 2012. The Collection 6 algorithm has several modifications from the previous Collection 5 (C005) algorithm. This study evaluated reliabilities of two alternative datasets of surface-level Tair and Tdew derived from C005 and C006 Aqua MODIS07_L2 (MYD07_L2) products using ground measured temperatures from 77 National Weather Stations (NWS). Saturated and actual vapor pressures were calculated using MYD07_L2 Tair and Tdew. The C006 Tair showed lower mean error (ME, -0.76 K) and root mean square error (RMSE, 3.34 K) than the C005 Tair (ME = -1.89 K, RMSE = 4.06 K). In contrasts, ME and RMSE of C006 Tdew were higher than those (ME = -0.39 K, RMSE = 5.65 K) of C005 product. Application of ambient lapse rate for Tair showed appreciable improvements of estimation accuracy for both of C005 and C006, though this modification slightly increased errors in C006 Tdew. The C006 products provided better estimation of vapor pressure datasets than the C005-derived vapor pressure. Our results indicate that, except for Tdew, C006 MYD07_L2 product showed better reliability for the region of South Korea than the C005 products.
In this study, we estimate solar surface insolation (SSI) by using physical methods with MTSAT-1R data. SSI is regarded as crucial parameter when interpreting solar-earth energy system, climate change, and agricultural production predict application. Most of SSI estimation model mainly uses ground based-measurement such as pyranometer to tune the constructed model and to validate retrieved SSI data from optical channels. When compared estimated SSI with pyranometer measurements, there are some systemic differences between those instruments. The pyranometer data observed upward-looking hemispherical solid angle and distributed hourly measurements data which are averaged every 2 minute instantaneous observation. Whereas MTSAT-1R channels data are taken instantaneously images at fixed measurement time over scan area, and are pixel-based observation with a much smaller solid angle view. Those temporal discrepancies result from systemic differences can induce validation error. In this study, we adjust hour when estimate SSI to improve the retrieved accurate SSI.
