In order to analyze hyper-spectral properties of Sand and Dust Storm (SDS), dust observation experiment has been performed at the Korea Global Atmosphere Watch Center (KGAW) in Anmyeon form early March to middle of May, 2007. We measured down-welling radiances by using ground-based Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) at the time of overpass of AIRS. And radiative transfer model simulation has been carried out to estimate the effects of size distribution, components, and altitude of SDS over the high resolution infrared spectrum in the range of 500-1500 $cm^{-1}$ with a line-by-line radiative transfer model and compared them with FT-IR and AIRS/Aqua observing data.

This paper is a part of developing a program that predicts the surface temperature and the IR images of ground objects by considering solar irradiation and atmospheric convection. The thermal modeling is essential for identifying objects on the scenes obtained from the remote sensing. And the temperature distribution on the objects is necessary to obtain their infrared images in contrast to the background. We considered the composite heat transfer modes including conduction, convection and spectral solar radiation incident on the objects within a scene to calculate the surface temperature distribution. The surface temperatures obtained by using the S/W developed in this study(Silhouette) and a commercial S/W(SE-Workbench-IR) are computed and compared each other. Results obtained by using the S/W developed in this study(Silhouette) show fairly good agreement with those obtained by the SE-Workbench-IR.
EOC (Electro-Optical Camera) of KOMPSAT-1 (Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite) has been producing land imageries of the world since January 2000. After image data are acquired by EOC, they are transmitted from satellite to ground via X-band RF signal. Then, EOC image data are generated and pass through radiometric and geometric corrections to generate standard products of EOC images. After radiometric correction on EOC image data, Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) compensation is applicable on EOC images with user's request for better image quality. MTF compensation is concerned with filtering EOC images to minimize the effect of degradations. For Image Receiving and Processing System (IRPE) at KOMPSAT Ground Station (KGS), Wiener filter is used in MTF compensation for EOC images. If the Pointing Spread Function (PSF) of EOC system is known, signal-to-noise power spectra ratio is the only factor in the determination of Wiener filter. In this paper, MTF compensation in IRPE at KGS is introduced and MTF compensated EOC 1R images are generated using Wiener filters with various signal-to-noise power spectra ratios. MTF compensated EOC 1R images are correlated with EOC 1R images for observing linearities between them. As a result, the effect of signal-to-noise power spectra ratio is shown on MTF compensated EOC 1R images.
KOMPSAT-1 (KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite ? 1) EOC (Electro Optic Camera) raw images are radiometrically corrected on ground based on the characteristics of EOC. They consist of each CCD (Charge?Coupled Device) pixel’s calibration slope which was measured on ground, electrical gains which are applied to amplify for increasing output pixel counts. Currently, radio-metrically corrected EOC images with calibration slope have still shown defective features by residual stripes. So, it should be compensated by adjusting the calibration slope. In this paper, the adjustment of current calibration slope for de-striping EOC images is addressed and test results are shown.

The World Health Organisation has identified ‘Fluorosis’as a serious bone disease caused by groundwater. Though the fluoride content in groundwater is a natural phenomenon, when the permissible limit of fluoride is exceeded the consequences may be fatal. This study is identified areas of high fluoride content in the Dharmapuri district of India, which is one of the major districts severely affected by fluorosis (WHO). The approach to this problem is by using GIS as a tool to locate areas of high risk. Ground Water samples collected from 35 randomly located wells (open / bore wells) in the district were analysed for fluoride content. The results were compared with the standards of WHO (World Health Organisation ), ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research ), BIS (Bureau of Indian Standard) and PHE (Public Health Engineering) and interpolated using IDW and spline methods using Arcview GIS 3.2 a. A computer based automated information system was developed in Arcview Avenue 3.2a, so as to enable the user to visit the risk areas at his desktop and to remediate measures as and when required.
Rice is one of the most important crop in the world and is a major export of Thailand. Optical sensors are not useful for rice monitoring, because most cultivated areas are often obscured by cloud during the growing period, especially in South East Asia. Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) such as RADARSAT, can see through regardless of weather condition which make it possible to monitor rice growth and to retrieve rice acreage, using the unique temporal signature of rice fields. This paper presents the result of a study of examining the backscatter behavior of rice using multi-temporal RADARSAT dataset. Ground measurements of paddy parameters and water and soil condition were collected. The ground truth information was also used to identify mature rice crops, orchard, road, residence, and aquaculture ponds. Land use class distributions from the RADARSAT image were analyzed. Comparison of the mean DB of each land use class indicated significant differences. Schematic representation of temporal backscatter of rice crop were plotted. Based on the study carried out in Pathum Thani Province test site, the results showed variation of sigma naught from first tillering vegatative phase until ripenning phase. It is suggested that at least, three radar data acquisitions taken at 3 stages of rice growth circle namely; those are at the beginning of rice growth when the field is still covered with water, in the ear differentiation period, and at the beginning of the harvest season, are required for rice monitoring. This pilot project was an experimental one aiming at future operational rice monitoring and potential yield predicttion.
Over the past 20 years, Korea's overall import and export cargo volume has increased at an average annual rate of approximately 5.3%. About 99% of the cargo is still being transported by sea. Due to recent increases in maritime cargo volume, congestion in maritime logistics has become challenging due to factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and conflicts. Continuous monitoring of ports has become crucial. Various ground observation systems and Automatic Identification System (AIS) data have been utilized for monitoring ports and conducting numerous preliminary studies for the efficient operation of container terminals and cargo volume prediction. However, small and developing countries' ports face difficulties in monitoring due to environmental issues and aging infrastructure compared to large ports. Recently, with the increasing utility of artificial satellites, preliminary studies have been conducted using satellite imagery for continuous maritime cargo data collection and establishing ocean monitoring systems in vast and hard-to-reach areas. This study aims to visually detect ships docked at berths in the Busan New Port using high-resolution satellite imagery and quantitatively evaluate berth utilization rates. By utilizing high-resolution satellite imagery from Compact Advanced Satellite 500-1 (CAS500-1), Korea Multi-Purpose satellite-3 (KOMPSAT-3), PlanetScope, and Sentinel-2A, ships docked within the port berths were visually detected. The berth utilization rate was calculated using the total number of ships that could be docked at the berths. The results showed variations in berth utilization rates on June 2, 2022, with values of 0.67, 0.7, and 0.59, indicating fluctuations based on the time of satellite image capture. On June 3, 2022, the value remained at 0.7, signifying a consistent berth utilization rate despite changes in ship types. A higher berth utilization rate indicates active operations at the berth. This information can assist in basic planning for new ship operation schedules, as congested berths can lead to longer waiting times for ships in anchorages, potentially resulting in increased freight rates. The duration of operations at berths can vary from several hours to several days. The results of calculating changes in ships at berths based on differences in satellite image capture times, even with a time difference of 4 minutes and 49 seconds, demonstrated variations in ship presence. With short observation intervals and the utilization of high-resolution satellite imagery, continuous monitoring within ports can be achieved. Additionally, utilizing satellite imagery to monitor changes in ships at berths in minute increments could prove useful for small and developing country ports where harbor management is not well-established, offering valuable insights and solutions.

The geo-referencing of satellite imagery is a key task in remote sensing. GCPs are points the position of which is known both in the image and in the supporting maps. Mapping function makes the determination of map coordinates of all image pixels possible. Generally manual operations are done to identify image points corresponding to the points on a digital topographic map. In order to accurately measure ground coordinates of GCPs, differential global positioning system (DGPS) surveying are used. To acquire the sufficient number of well distributed GCPs is one of the most time-consuming and cost-consuming tasks. This paper describes the procedure of automatically extracting GCOs using GCP database. GCP image chips and image matching technique are used for automatic extraction of GCPs. We developed image processing tool for making image chip GCPs and Web Server for management of GCPs.
Estimation of carbon in the natural forest regions is a pre-requisite for carbon management. In the light of increasing carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere, the amount of carbon present in the plants and soils are very much needed to estimate the sequestered carbons stock of any region. Carbon stock estimation studies are limited in India, especially in the natural forest regions of Eastern ghats of Tamil Nadu. Remote sensing, Geographical Information System (GIS) and global positioning system (GPS) were used along with extensive field and laboratory works to estimate the carbon stock in the living biomass and soil. About five forest types were identified and mapped using satellite data. The total biomass carbon including above and below ground were 2.74 Tg and the total soil organic carbon was 3.48 Tg. This study has yielded significant information about the carbon stock in a natural forest region and it could be used for future comparative studies.

In recent years, civil-engineering work is desired the terrain information to be more efficient in earthwork volume calculation. One method for collecting elevation data is LiDAR. Lidar data was used to produce rapidly an accurate digital elevation model of the terrain, compared with the conventional ground surveys, photogrammetty, and remote sensing. Raw Lidar data is combined with GPS positional data to georeference the data sets. Lidar data is edited and processed to generate surface models, elevation models, and contours. Here we can either create a Tin Volume Surface or a Gird Volume Surface. Triangulated Irregular Network(TIN) has complex data structure, but it can describe well terrain surface features. As we have seen, we search the efficiency for earthwork volume calculation using Lidar data. One conclusion we can draw from this study is that Lidar data is more accurate result than digital map in the calculation of earthwork volume.
