This paper describes an implementation of linear feature extraction algorithms for satellite images and a method of automatic GCP(Ground Control Point) filing using the extracted linear feature. We propose a new linear feature extraction algorithm which uses magnitude and direction information of edges. The result of applying the proposed algorithm to satellite images are presented and compared with those of the other algorithms. By using the proposed algorithm, automatic GCP filing was successfully performed.
This study proposes an approach to unsupervisedly estimate the number of classes and the parameters of defining the classes in order to train the classifier. In the proposed method, the image is segmented using a spatial region growing based on hierarchical clustering, and fuzzy training is then employed to find the sample classes that well represent the ground truth. For cluster validation, this approach iteratively estimates the class-parameters in the fuzzy training for the sample classes and continuously computes the log-likelihood ratio of two consecutive class-numbers. The maximum ratio rule is applied to determine the optimal number of classes. The experimental results show that the new scheme proposed in this study could be used to select the regions with different characteristics existed on the scene of observed image as an alternative of field survey that is so expensive.
Baekdusan is a Cenozoic stratovolcano in which a series of micro-seismic events and gaseous emissions have been reported in 1990s. Two-pass DInSAR technique was applied to determine displacement in the volcano by using 10 ERS SAR and 41 JERS-1 SAR datasets. Most interferometric phases out of 58 JERS-1 differential interferograms showed concentric fringe patterns that correlated with elevation. From an analysis of fringe-duration relation, the fringe patterns were found to be severely distorted specifically by stratified troposphere. To estimate the tropospheric delay, we used the data in the Sobaeksan located about 20 km away from the summit of Baekdusan. The maximum and mean magnitudes of the phase delay in the Baekdusan were respectively 13.8 cm and 3.8 cm over 1200 m in altitude. After removing tropospheric effects, a mean inflation rate was estimated to be about 3 mm per year from 1992 to 1998. Although the inflation rate of the volcano is inconclusive without ground truth data, the results indicate that there exists slow upward deformation in the Baekdusan volcano.
In this paper, we proposed a simplified strategy for the epipolarity of linear pushbroom imagery. The proposed strategy is verified on "Gupta and Hartly" sensor model and "Orun and Natarajan" sensor model. It is also compared with the precise epipolarity model of each sensor model on SPOT and KOMPSAT imagery. For the quantitative analysis, 20 ground control points are used as independent checking points. Based on the results, the accuracy of the proposed strategy is not different from that of the precise epipolarity model of each sensor model (below 0.1 pixels). Under the worst circumstance, the proposed strategy is robust. We can assure that the proposed strategy will show high accuracy on most of sensor models based on the co-linearity equations.
Epipolar images have to be generated to stereo display aerial images or satellite images. Pushbroom sensor is used to acquire high resolution satellite images. These satellite images have curvilinear epipolar lines unlike the epipolar lines of frame images, which are straight lines. The aforementioned fact makes it difficult to generate epipolar images for pushbroom satellite images. If we assume a linear transition of the sensor having constant speed and attitude during image acquisition, we can generate epipolar images based on parallel projection model (20 Affine model). Recent high resolution images are provided with RPC values so that we can exploit these values to generate epipolar images without using ground control points and tie point. This paper provides a procedure based on the parallel projection model for generating epipolar images directly from a stereo IKONOS images, and experimental results.
This paper discusses the capabilities of airborne remotely sensed data to detect and classify forest damades. In this work the AMS (Aircraft Multiband Scanner) was used to obtain digital imagery at 300m altitude for forest damage inventory in the Black Forest of Germany. MSS(Multispectral Scanner) digital numbers were converted to spectral emittance and radiance values in 8 spectral bands from the visible to the thermal infrared and submitted to a maximum-likelihood classification for : (1) tree species ; and. (2) damage classes. As expected, the resulted, the results of MSS data with high spatial resolution 0.75m$\times$0.75m enabled the detection and identification of single trees with different damages and were nearly equivalent to the truth information of ground checked data.
In this study, an integrated GMS(Geostationary Meteorological Satellite) receiving ground system, which includes the real-time reception and image processing of WEFAX data, has been developed. The demodulator, PC demodulator, PC interface and application softwares of the system were made and integrated with the commercially available antenna and receiver. Hardwars of the system were described in this part. This system operates at IBM PC/AT or above. It can be used for students at school and for application research in the fields of meteorology, oceanography, hydrology and astronomy.
Real time transparency estimation method was studied using AVHRR Channel 1 (Visible band, 0.58 - 0.68 $\mu\textrm{m}$) digital number (DN) of NOAA Satellite. The relationshop between the measured transparency and the digital number shows following exponential equation in the southeastern Yellow Sea : Tr = 4820 $\times$ exp (-0.082 $\times$ DN), 77 $\leq$ DN < 105 where Tr is the transparency in meters and DN is the digital number of AVHRR Channel 1. From this equation, real time transparency can be simply estimated using data from the NOAA Ground Station of National Fisheries Research and Development Agency.
Although EOC data have been frequently used in several applications since the launch of the KOMPSAT-1 satellite in 1999, its radiometric characteristics are not clear due to the inherent limitations of the on-board calibration system. The radiometric characteristics of remotely sensed imagery can be measured by the sensitivity of radiant flux coming from various surface features on the earth. The objective of this study is to analyze the radiometric characteristics of EOC data by simulating the sensor- received radiance. Initially, spectral reflectance values of reference targets were measured on the ground by using a portable spectre-radiometer at the EOC spectrum. A radiative transfer model, LOWTRAN, then simulated the sensor-received radiance values of the same reference target. By correlating the digital number (DN) extracted from the EOC image to the corresponding radiance values simulated from LOWTRAN, we could find the radiometric calibration coefficients for EOC image. The radiometric gain coefficients of EOC are very similar to those of other panchromatic optical sensors.
The so-called B-method, a simplified surface energy budget, permits calculation of daily actual evapotranspiration (ET) using remotely sensed data, such as NOAA-AVHRR. Even if the use of satellite data allows estimation of the albedo and surface temperature, this model requires meteorological data measured at ground-level to obtain the other inputs. In addition, a difficulty may be occurred by the difference of temporal scales between the net radiation in daily scale and instantaneous measurement at midday of the surface and air temperatures because the data covered whole day are necessary to obtain accumulated daily net radiation. In order to solve these problems, this study attempted a modification of B-method through an extension of hourly ET value calculated using a complete instantaneous inputs. The estimation of the daily apparent ET from newly proposed system showed a root mean square error of 0.26 mm/day as compared the output obtained from the classical model. It is evident that this may offer more rapid estimation and reduced data volume.
