  • The near fault ground motion(NFGM) is characterized by a single long period velocity pulse of large magnitude. NFGM's have been observed in recent strong earthquakes, Turkey Izmit (1999), Japan Kobe(1995), Northridge(1994), etc. These strong earthquakes have caused considerable damage to infrastructures because the epicenter was close to the urban area, called as NFGM. Extensive research for the far fault ground motion(FFGM) have been carried out in strong seismic region, but limited research have been done for NFGM in low or moderate seismic regions because of very few records. The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze the effect of near-fault ground motions on RC bridge piers without lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcing steels. The seismic performance of two RC bridge piers under near-fault ground motions was investigated on the shake table. In addition, Two of four identical RC bridge piers were tested under a quasi-static load, and the others were under a pseudo-dynamic load. The respectively two RC bridge pier is comparatively subjected to Pseudo-dynamic loadings and Quasi-Static loadings. This paper indicated that more gives bigger ultimate strain of longitudinal steels to be fractured at bigger PGA motion.

  • In recent years, Natm has been successfully applied to difficult ground conditions with the use of soil-perservention methods which promote face stability and restrict excessive ground movement. When the tunnle excavation od made through difficult ground like highly weathered rock, the umbrella arch method is often adopted which pre-reinforceas tunnel crown periphery using a stiff shell-shaped structure. The umbrella arch method was originally developed in Itali, and has recently been confirmed its effectiveness in Korea as well. However, no in depth study on the umbrella arch method has been conducted ans as a result no rational analysis/design method is available at present. Therefore this study was undertaken with the aim of identifying the basic reinforcing mechanism and satablishing both qualitative and quantiative relationships between various design parameters and ground movements.

  • Concrete poles(CP) are popular supports for distribution lines. Various types of grounding electrode, such as copper-clad rods, have been used to maintain CP's ground resistance under the required value. The buried part of CP can also have structural grounding effect because of its iron reinforcing rods inside CPs. In this paper, we measured the total ground current injected into CP ground while measuring the ground current splitting to the metal electrode as well as the total injecting current. By this, it was able to measure the ground current splitting to CP structure. Based on the measured results, interrelationship between ground resistance of metal electrodes and current split factor to CP structure was analyzed.

  • The ground anchor used in domestic area, which resists by adhesion between anchor body and the ground to the external force, seems not to be adequate for soft ground and urban area where the boundary between structures is close because the ground is disturbed and lost its strength during boring. In order to overcome such a shortcoming an expanded anchor system has been developed. The ground expansion is accomplished by means of Pulse Discharge Technology. In this technology, a high voltage of electricity is stored and discharged in milliseconds which induces high pressure acting on the ground. By making a couple of bulbs, a passive resistance as well as shaft resistance are mobilized, and therefore a higher pullout resistance comparing existing ground anchors is developed. In this study, a couple of full scale tests were conducted in order to figure out how much the resistance of an expanded anchor increases comparing to the straight. As a result, it was found that a remarkable increase in ultimate pullout capacity is observed for the soft ground and as the number of bulb increases. In addtion, as a result of applying to a cut slope reinforcement, it appeared that the length of fixed zone of anchor can be reduced effectively.

  • SCP(Sand Compaction Pile) method that forms a composite ground by driving compacted sand piles into the soft ground. This method is one of the soil improvement techniques for reinforcing and strengthening soft ground deposits. This thesis describes the investigation on the behavior of soft ground reinforced with SCP by low improvement ratio. Direct shear test and consolidation test carried out to verified behavior of composite ground reinforced with SCP. Test results were discussed with reference to the amount of consolidation settlement, variation of shear resistance with area replacement ratio and effect of the stress concentration. And, laboratory model loading test carried out to verified the effect of the location and failure mode of reinforced embankment. Residual shear strength varies with the area replacement and constrict load in the low replacement ratio. Calculated stress concentration ratio overestimate than proposed valve by experimental, theoretical and analytical method. As regards the location, improving right below of the top of the slope was more effective than below of the toe of the slope. This thesis carried out to obtain fundamental information of behavior of the composit ground. Hereafter, centrifuge test that reproduce stress state of the in-situ must be necessary through the further study about pile penetration, reinforce position and construct time.

  • With the increasing demand for blasting demolition in urban areas, the simulation of structural collapse prior to the real blasting operation is a key process for ensuring the success and safety of the blasting demolition. The simulation of collapsing behavior of a structure is not only vital for preventing unexpected economic loss and casualties, but also helpful in minimizing public claims by precisely estimating the environmental impact resulting from the operation. This study proposes a new technique for simulation of a blast demolition using FEM based LS-DYNA codes. The technique tries to simplify the complex arrangement of reinforcing bars, and use the actual properties of the concrete and steel reinforcing bars, thereby improving the overall capability of the simulation to match well with the collapsing behavior of real-scale structures.

  • The compression anchor is characterized by decrement of progressive failure, simple site work, economy and durability compared with tension anchor. In this paper, compression anchor is analysed through the laboratory element tests. The formula to be estimate the grout strength in fixed part of compression anchor and the effective reinforcement method for several types of soil were suggested. The following conclusions were made from this study : (1) A formula, which is able to calculate the grout strength in the fixed part of the compression anchor, is suggested. (2) The strength increment ratios( $R_{si}$) are 100%, 132%, 147%, 217% according to the reinforcement method of grout. The reinforcement method is Non, Outside spiral, Inside-Outside spiral, Steel pipe, respectively. (3) The strength increment ratios( $R_{si}$) by reinforcing can be 8.23 times the strength increment effect according to the reinforcement types and ground confining pressure. (4) The steel pipe reinforcement is most effective in decomposed soil while, in the case of hard rock ground, high confining pressure is exerted on the grout, so there is no need to use reinforcements.

  • Field measurements were carried out in this study to investigate the behavior of cut and cover tunnel such as the distribution and the magnitude of the earth pressure during back fill process of the ground material. Three kinds of measuring instruments, such as the earth pressure load cell, the concrete strain gauge and the reinforcing bar meter of embedded type in concrete structure were installed and measured. Earth pressure load cells, installed after construction of the tunnel lining, measure the outside forces acting on the tunnel lining with radial directions. Three load cells were installed at the crown, the right and the left shoulder of the tunnel, respectively. Three sets of reinforcing bar meter were installed in the double reinforcements of the tunnel lining and their locations were the same with the position of the earth pressure load cells. Concrete strain gauge was installed only one site of the upper compressive part at the tunnel crown. Based on the measuring results in the field, the deformation and the earth pressure acting on the tunnel lining were investigated with the back fill process of the ground material. Considerations on the validity of the measuring results were paid. For the analysis of measurements, after dividing back fill process into three steps, various factors which affect on the behavior of tunnel lining were investigated at each step.

  • Reservoirs, which make up most of South Korea's reservoirs, are located in rural areas. In the case of rural reservoirs, about 75% have been reported over 50 years old aged reservoirs constructed before the 1960s. Reservoirs are important facilities that store and supply water necessary for daily life. However, if it is destroyed, the reservoir can cause a lot of damage, so continuous management is necessary. As a method for strengthening old reservoirs, a method using cement has been widely applied. However, OPC is a product that uses a lot of carbon dioxide and natural resources. Therefore, the amount of cement should be reduced. Against this background, in this study, the ground injection material of utilizing circulation resources was applied to the site. Applied reservoirs have been around for 75 years and leaks have occurred in some sections. The application method was constructed in two rows, up to a depth of 12m. After reinforcement, the electrical resistivity test was conducted three times. As a result, similar resistance was shown at 1 month after construction. And after 6 months, the saturation area decreased. And the performance after reinforcing the aged reservoir was examined. As a result of the review, this study confirmed that the applicability was equivalent to that of OPC, and the excellent performance of reinforcing the aged reservoir was shown.

  • This paper presents a study on the reduction of concrete lining re-bar according to the tunnel design factors. The design of the concrete lining increases the reinforcing re-bar according to the application of excessive load, and the economical efficiency is reduced. In order to improve the economical efficiency of tunnel construction, rational standards are required for the design factors of concrete lining. Therefore, this research analyzed the characteristics and problems of the design factors applied to the design of concrete lining. Also, the economical review of the concrete lining for design factor application was compared with the amount of reinforcing re-bar calculated from the section design using numerical analysis. The results show that the amount of re-bar is varied according to the design factors. That is, the required amount for re-bar in the tunnel concrete lining could be reduced in the design stage. The results of this study may be useful for economic design of concrete lining in the future.
