  • The Mohr-Coulomb model is mainly used in evaluating the behavior of the ground in numerical analyses of domestic ground excavation. This study analyzes its limitations and compares its numerical results with the hyperbolic model, a model that closely follows actual ground behavior during excavation. Recent applications of the Mohr-Coulomb model in Korea have tended to impose arbitrary special boundary conditions to control the problem of excessive heaving of the ground excavation surface. This adjustment only controls the size of the heaving of the excavation surface, implying that the ground behavior is distorted from the actual behavior. This study compares results from the hyperbolic model (hardening soil model) and the Mohr-Coulomb model, and confirms that the hyperbolic model provides both a more-suitable solution to the problem of heaving during excavation and the actual stress-strain behavior. In numerical analyses of ground excavation, the hyperbolic model is expected to give results consistent with the actual ground behavior.

  • Long-term field observations were performed in three excavation sites in order to investigate the displacement behavior of adjacent ground during overall excavation procedure, where the depths of deep excavations were 15 m$\∼$29 m. In this study, ground settlements and lateral displacements of braced wall measured during installation of retaining wall and removal of bracing were specially focused to evaluate the behavior quantitatively according to three-stage-divided procedure, i.e. pre-excavation, main excavation, and removal of bracing. Through field measurements on three excavation sites, lateral displacements induced during removal of bracing are approximate to 40$\%$ of the amount found during main excavation stage and additional adjacent ground deformation during post-excavation procedure ranges from 18$\%$ to 33$\%$ of that found during main excavation stage, based on the settlement volume. In conclusion, it was quantitatively identified in this study that the deformations of adjacent ground during pre- and post-excavation stage were not negligible.

  • Reliable predictions of the movement of earth retaining structures and the ground adjacent to braced walls in urban excavation are often difficult due to many variable factors. The ground settlement and the damage of adjacent structures in urban excavation has been an important issue. Therefore, the stability of the adjacent structures must be secured with the excavation support and research on the protection of adjacent structure is necessary. This study showed an urban excavation case and introduce observation method for case of damage behavior in urban excavation.

  • The excavation site in the new city of inchon songdo is distributed with soft reclaimed soil and marine deposit. So, the general ground anchor is not applied to this layer of soft ground as the earth retaining support system, because of settlement. And then, Jacket pack anchor which is newly developed in order to increasing the pullout resistance by certain grout bulb formation and expansion effect in soft ground is applied to this site instead of the general ground anchor. Though the maximum horizontal displacement shows about 30mm~100mm (The maximum horizontal displacement/excavation depth$\fallingdotseq$0.32~1.0%) according to excavation sequence, generally excavation work finished stably. Also, load cell after setting shows almost increasing trend with increasing horizontal displacement. It means that the settlement of Jacket pack anchor in soft ground is good. From the result of this case, we knew that Jacket pack anchor was able to use the earth retaining support system in soft ground. Using Jacket pack anchor in soft ground, The allowance of the horizontal displacement is applied more than general value considering soil factors.

  • With recent growth of population and industry, urban development grows into grand scheme of excavation and construction in urban area. As the development progress advanced, the developments get large and deepen. With a progress of technology development in geotechnical engineering in Korea, most our grand scheme of projects follows great progress. On the other hand, some excavation in construction site caused direct or indirect event that affects the adjacent or surrounding structures by excavation from time to time. This event usually happens around residential and commercial area where underground tunnel, subway station, commercial building, and high-rises excavation site is, could lead great damage on economy as well as personal injury or human casualties. In order to prevent this event, the study has to be done with analysis on various events of excavation and its cause. In this paper, the research has collected the various excavation events and their causes to analyze on each site and event to define emphasis on surrounding environment.

  • This paper presents the prediction of deep excavation-induced ground surface movements using artifical neural network(ANN) technique, which is of prime importance in the perspective of damage assessment of adjacent buildings. A finite element model, which can realistically replicate deep excavation-induced ground movements was employed to perform a parametric study on deep excavations with emphasis on ground movements. The result of the finite element analysis formed a basis for the Arificial Neural Network(ANN) system development. It was shown that the developed ANN system can be effecting used for a first-order prediction of ground movements associated with deep-excavation.

  • This study analyzed ground settlement and ground stress depending on tunnel excavation and the ground reinforcing grouting methods for double line road tunnel through deep weathered zone. Diameter of double line road tunnel was approximately 12m and umbrella arch method and side wall reinforcing grouting were applied. The ring-cut split excavation method and CD-cut excavation method for excavation method were applied. Analysis of failure rate and vertical stress ratio show that the tunnel for which the height of the cover(H) was higher than four times the diameter, it can be considered a deep tunnel. Comparisons of various excavation and ground reinforcement methods were showed that CD-cut method results in lower surface and crown settlement, and lower failure rate than where using Ring-cut split method. In addition the side wall reinforcing grouting resulted in reduction of tunnel displacement and settlement.

  • The ground excavation in the urban area induces in general ground movement and subsequent damage on the adjacent building structures. So the essentials in the designing stage are the prediction of ground movement induced by the ground excavation and the damage risk assessment of buildings adjacent to the excavation. A propsed prediction method of the ground movement induced by the strutted excavation has been studied with due consideration of the existing ground movement prediction methods. A building damage risk assessment method based on the angular distortion and the horizontal strain derived from the green-field ground movement is also proposed. These methods have been applied successfully in the on-going deep excavation project in Singapore.

  • Excavation usually induces considerable ground settlement in soft ground, which may result in damage of adjacent buildings. Generally, the settlement is predicted through elastic-plastic finite element method and empirical method with defects. In this paper, an analytical solution for predicting ground settlement induced by excavation is developed based on the definition of three basic modes of wall displacement: T mode, R mode and P model. A separation variable method is employed to solve the problem based on elastic theory. The solution is validated by comparing the results from the analytical method with the results from finite element method(FEM) and existing measured data. Good agreement is obtained. The results show that T mode and R mode will result in a downward-sloping ground settlement profile. The P mode will result in a concave-type ground settlement profile.
