  • Hydrologic-topographical parameters were extracted using GIS. The use of GIS is more effective and exact than the execution by person. And the purpose of this paper is to extract more efficient size of grid for DEM analysis by applying GIS technology. As a result, when the grid size is less than $100m{\times}100m$ the trend of extracted parameters is similar but when the grid size is over $100m{\times}100m$ the trend of extraction parameters is dispersive. Therefore, it is appropriate to extract hydrologic-topographical parameters the grid size of $100m{\times}100m$ in DEM analysis.

  • Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) based on some advantages such as transparency, cheap materials and anti-sensibility for an anlge of incidence has been expected to capture most of solar cell market in the near future. To practical use of DSC, researches on high efficiency as well as upscaling are necessary. In this study, we tried to insert the grid electrode in DSC and scribe transparent conducting oxide (TCO) using Nd:YAG laser. The grid electrode makes the electron movement improved and diffusional movement minimized. Consequently, the efficiency of DSC was increased by reducing electron loss and the surface resistance of TCO. The grid electrode was made using Ag target by radio frequency sputtering. And the scribed surface was confirmed by taking a scanning electron microscopy photos. As the result, grid cell had improved photocurrent and fill factor as compared with the conventional cell. And the efficiency was increased about 1% by enhanced photocurrent and fill factor.

  • With the increasing development of renewable energy, it is expected that large-scale renewable power would be transported from the west and north area of China to the east and south area. For this reason, it will be necessary to develop a wide-area power grid in which the renewable energy would be the dominant power source, and the power grid will be faced by some critical challenges such as long-distance large-capacity power transmission, the stability of the wide-area power grid and the land use problem for the power grid. The superconducting technology for power (STP) would be a possible alternative for the development of China's future power grid. In last decade, STP has been extensively developed in China. In this paper, we present an overview of the R&D of STP last decade in China including: 1) the development of high temperature superconducting (HTS) materials, 2) DC power cables, 3) superconducting power substations, 4) fault current limiters and 5) superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES).

  • A challenge faced by smart grid systems is providing highly reliable transmissions to better serve different types of electrical applications and improve the energy efficiency of the system. Although wireless networking technologies can provide high-speed and cost-effective solutions, their performance may be impaired by various factors that affect the reliability of smart grid networks. Here, we first suggest the use of IEEE 802.11s-based wireless LAN mesh networks as high-speed wireless backbone networks for smart grid infrastructure to provide high scalability and flexibility while ensuring low installation and management costs. Thereafter, we analyze some vital problems of the IEEE 802.11s default routing protocol (named hybrid wireless mesh protocol; HWMP) from the perspective of transfer reliability, and propose appropriate solutions with a new routing method called HWMP-reliability enhancement to improve the routing reliability of 802.11s-based smart grid mesh networking. A simulation study using ns-3 was conducted to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed schemes.

  • The smart grid can create benefits such as the expansion of consumer choice and flexibility enhancement, adaption to future electric power industry change and the increasing use of renewable energy sources. Consumers can make a contribution to improve the overall effectiveness of system through active receptive response. They can enhance the energy consumption efficiency based on more information from service providers. The Smart Grid Promotion Act, which was enacted in April 2011, contains consumer protection provisions such as information collecting, sharing, and protection measures. On this reason, it is needed to expand promotion and education regarding the smart grid to improve the consumer awareness, and the schemes to enhance smart grid consumer acceptance should be established.

  • After many genome projects, algorithms and software to process explosively growing biological information have been developed. To process huge amount of biological information, high performance computing equipments are essential. If we use the remote resources such as computing power, storages etc., through a Grid to share the resources in the Internet environment, we will be able to obtain great efficiency to process data at a low cost. Here we present the performance improvement of the protein secondary structure prediction (PSIPred) by using the Grid platform, distributing protein sequence data on the Grid where each computer node analyzes its own part of protein sequence data to speed up the structure prediction. On the Grid, genome scale secondary structure prediction for Mycoplasma genitalium, Escherichia coli, Helicobacter pylori, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Caenorhabditis slogans were performed and analyzed by a statistical way to show the protein structural deviation and comparison between the genomes. Experimental results show that the Grid is a viable platform to speed up the protein structure prediction and from the predicted structures.

  • Recently, the need for integration of military-related information is increasing. The fundamental problem for integrating existing information systems is semantic inconsistency. To solve this problem, the use of metadata is essential, because metadata is a key component for effective information integration. In this paper, we present a metadata-based data grid system for integrating military data sources. First, we investigate federated database approach and data grid approach for information integration, and deal with metadata-based data grid. Then we present a data grid system for the integration of military information.

  • The core services in cloud computing environment are SaaS (Software as a Service), Paas (Platform as a Service) and IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service). Among these three core services server virtualization belongs to IaaS and is a service technology to reduce the server maintenance expenses. Normally, the primary purpose of sever virtualization is building and maintaining a new well functioning server rather than using several existing servers, and in improving the various system performances. Often times this presents an issue in that there might be a need to increase expenses in order to build a new server. This study intends to use grid service architecture for a form of server virtualization which utilizes the existing servers rather than introducing a new server. More specifically, the proposed system is to enhance system performance and to reduce the corresponding expenses, by adopting a scheduling algorithm among the distributed servers and the constituents for grid computing thereby supporting the server virtualization service. Furthermore, the proposed server virtualization system will minimize power management by adopting the sleep severs, the subsidized servers and the grid infrastructure. The power maintenance expenses for the sleep servers will be lowered by utilizing the ACPI (Advanced Configuration & Power Interface) standards with the purpose of overcoming the limits of server performance.

  • Data Grid is a kind of Grid computing provides the cooperative environment through the distributed data sharing, and can manage the massive data easily and efficiently. We designed and implemented Globus Toolkit4 (GT4) based database access and integration service (GDAIS). This service was implemented as Grid service for run on the GT4 which is Grid middleware. And it provides functions which are automatic registration of database in virtual organization, distributed query service, and the unified user interface. Also this system can use components which are provided from GT4. Therefore it can improve the efficiency to distribute and manage databases, can easily access and integrate of the distributed heterogeneous data in Grid environments.

  • This study compares dose difference between the presence or absence of grid in Chest PA radiography using auto exposure control and compares image quality among presence, absence or virtual grid, and proposes a new clinically useful grid combination for chest radiography. The human body phantom was placed Chest PA position and the dosimeter was placed at T6. The same irradiation conditions and field size were applied. 30 images were obtained in the state in which grid was applied and in the state in which grid was not applied, and an additional 30 images in which the virtual grid was applied to the image without the grid were obtained. Radiation dose was presented to entrance surface dose. The image quality was analyzed by comparing the signal-to-noise and contrast-to-noise ratio. ESD decreased by 48% when the grid was not used, compared to when the grid was used. SNR and CNR increased by 32% and 30% compared to grid use when grid was not used, respectively. In the case of using the virtual grid, it increased by 18% and 16% respectively, compared to the case of using the grid. As a result of this study, it is believed that when using a virtual grid instead of a grid, the quality of the image can be maintained while reducing the patient dose.
