  • This paper presents research on low-voltage microgrids to maintain a continuous power supply to critical loads on grid-connected islands in Korea. The low-voltage microgrids of this paper focused on that changes public office buildings into uninterrupted microgrids by autonomous operation. For this, a microgrid controller (MGC) and a power conditioning system (PCS) that allow a seamless transfer between grid-connected and grid-isolated operation are proposed. The proposed PCS operates with a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) switch and employs a simple structure. It supplies power continuously without operators through a coordinated operation between MGC and PCS. In addition, proposed MG has a schedule operation for minimizing electricity charges and provides ancillary services that enable the utilization of resources according to the operation purpose of utility distribution networks. To demonstrate the uninterrupted low-voltage microgrid proposed in this study, a microgrid was implemented and tested in a public office building in Anjwa Island, Jeollanam-do in Korea. A seamless, autonomous operation history, despite system disturbances, was obtained through a long-term demonstration of operation. The results showed that the proposed microgrid technology can be used to achieve energy resilience in grid-connected island areas.

  • This paper proposes a protection algorithm for a wind turbine generator (WTG) in a large wind farm. To minimize the outage section, a protection relay for a WTG should operate instantaneously for an internal fault or a connected feeder fault, whereas the relay should not operate for an internal fault of another WTG connected to the same feeder or an adjacent feeder fault. In addition, the relay should operate with a delay for an inter-tie fault or a grid fault. An internal fault of another WTG connected to the same feeder or an adjacent feeder fault, where the relay should not operate, is determined based on the magnitude of the positive sequence current. To differentiate an internal fault or a connected feeder fault from an inter-tie fault or a grid fault, the phase angle of the negative sequence current is used to distinguish a fault type. The magnitude of the positive sequence current is then used to decide either instantaneous operation or delayed operation. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified under various fault conditions with EMTP-RV generated data. The results indicate that the algorithm can successfully distinguish instantaneous operation, delayed operation, or non-operation depending on fault positions and types.

  • This paper presents a single-phase grid connected voltage-ed inverter with a power decoupling circuit. In the single-phase grid connected voltage-ed inverter, it is well known that a power pulsation with twice the grid frequency is contained in the input power. In a conventional voltage type inverter, electrolytic capacitors with large capacitance have been used in order to smooth the DC voltage. However, lifetime of those capacitors is shortened by the power pulsation with twice grid frequency. The authors have been studied a active power decoupling(APD) method that reduce the pulsating power on the input DC bus line, this enables to transfer the ripple energy appeared on the input DC capacitors into the energy in a small film capacitor on the additional circuit. Hence, extension of the lifetime of the inverter can be expected because the small film capacitor substitutes for the large electrolytic capacitors. Finally, simulation and experimental results are discussed.

  • Due to the variable nature of renewable energy resources and power demand by consumers, it is difficult to operate a power system installed with only one type of renewable energy resource. Grid-based renewable generation may be the only solution to overcome this problem. The conventional approach based on a low-voltage converter with power frequency transformer is commonly employed for grid connection of offshore renewable energy systems. Because of the heavy weight and large size of the transformer, the system can be expensive and complex in terms of installation and maintenance. In this paper, an 11-kV series connected H-bridge (SCHB) multilevel voltage source converter (VSC) is proposed to achieve a compact and light direct grid connection of renewable energy systems. This paper presents the design, simulation and analysis of a five level (5L)-SCHB and an eleven level (11L)-SCHB VSC for 11-kV grid-based renewable energy systems. The performance, cost, modulation scheme and harmonic spectra of the converter are analyzed.

  • As the renewable energy market grows, grid-connected inverters have been improving and expanding in several fields in recent years because energy conversion devices are the main components of solar systems. In this paper, a high-precision new grid-connected three-phase inverter system is proposed. The proposed system consists of a main inverter, a sub inverter and a transformer. The main inverter operates at a low switching frequency and high power and transmits power to the grid. A sub-inverter connected in series with the transmission line through a matching transformer operates at lower power than the main inverter to provide input values to the transformer. The transformer acts as a power supply according to the voltage compensation value. This study is based on the principle of operation of the UPFC(Unified Power Flow Controller) structure used to regulate power flow in AC transmission lines. The grid-connected inverter system proposed in this paper is implemented with high precision and high resolution. The proposed system was verified through its ability to enhance and ensure the safety of the proposed system through simulation and experiment.

  • Voltage stabilization is an essential component of power quality in low voltage DC (LVDC) microgrid. The microgrid demands the interconnection of a number of small distributed power resources, including variable renewable generators. Therefore, the voltage can be maintained in a stable manner through the control of these distributed generators. In this study, we did research on the new advanced operating method for a photovoltaic (PV) simulator in order to achieve interconnection to a bipolar LVDC microgrid. The validity of this voltage stabilization method, using the distributed generators, is experimentally verified. The test LVDC microgrid is configured by connecting the developed PV simulator and DC load, DC line, and AC/DC rectifier for connecting the main AC grid. The new advanced control method is applied to the developed PV simulator for the bipolar LVDC grid in order to stabilize the gird voltage. Using simulation results, the stabilization of the grid voltage by PV simulator using the proposed control method is confirmed the through the simulation results in various operation scenarios.

  • Korea and Japan have done a lot of research on composite girders with corrugated steel webs and built many bridges with corrugated steel webs due to the significant advantages of this type of bridges. Considering the demanding on the calculation method of such types of bridges and lack of relevant reinforcement design method, this paper proposes the spatial grid analysis theory and tensile stress region method. First, the accuracy and applicability of spatial grid model in analyzing composite girders with corrugated steel webs was validated by the comparison with models using shell and solid elements. Then, in a real engineering practice, the reinforcement designs from tensile stress region method based on spatial grid model, design empirical method and specification method are compared. The results show that the tensile stress region reinforcement design method can realize the inplane and out-of-plane reinforcement design in the top and bottom slabs in bridges with corrugated steel webs. The economy and precision of reinforcement design using the tensile stress region method is emphasized. Therefore, the tensile stress region reinforcement design method based on the spatial grid model can provide a new direction for the refined design of composite box girder with corrugated steel webs.

  • This paper investigated the influence of simple support girds on flow, irrespective of having mixing vanes, in a 1 × 3 array rod bundle by using CFD methodology and the most accurate turbulence model which could reflect the actual physics of the flow was determined. In this context, a CFD model was created simulating the experimental studies on a single-phase flow [1] and the results were compared with the experimental data. In the first part of the study, influence of mesh was examined. Tetra, hybrid and poly type meshes were analyzed and convergence study was carried out on each in order to determine the most appropriate type and density. k - ε Standard and RSM LPS turbulence models were used in this section. In the second part of the study, the most appropriate turbulence model that could reflect the physics of the actual flow was investigated. RANS based turbulence models were examined using the mesh that was determined in the first part. Velocity and turbulence intensity results obtained on the upstream and downstream of the spacer grid at -3dh, +3dh and +40dh locations were compared with the experimental data. In the last section of the study, the behavior of flow through the spacer grid was examined and its prominent aspects were highlighted on the most appropriate turbulence model determined in the second part. Results of the study revealed the importance of mesh type. Hybrid mesh having the largest number of structured elements performed remarkably better than the other two on results. While comparisons of numerical and experimental results showed an overall agreement within all turbulence models, RSM LPS presented better results than the others. Lastly, physical appearance of the flow through spacer grids revealed that springs has more influence on flow than dimples and induces transient flow behaviors. As a result, flow through a simple support grid was examined and the most appropriate turbulence model reflecting the actual physics of the flow was determined.

  • Flexural characteristics of the R.C beams strengthened with newly-developed grid-type carbon fiber plastics(CFRP-GRIDS) were investigated. The tests were conducted under the four-points load to the failure to investigate the strengthening effects of CFRP-GRIDS on the beams. Results showed that initial cracks appeared in the boundary layers of fibers embedded in the newly-placed mortar concrete slowly progressed to the direction of supports and showed fracture of fiber plastics and brittle failure of concrete in compression in sequence after the yielding of steel reinforcement. Accordingly, the appropriate area of Grid-type carbon-fiber plastics in the strengthening design of deteriorated RC structures should be limited and given based on the ultimate strength design method to avoid the brittle failure of concrete structures.
