  • We investigate dynamical evolution of gas in barred galaxies using a high-resolution, grid-based hydrodynamic simulations on two-dimensional cylindrical geometry. Non-axisymmetric gravitational potential of the bar is represented by the Ferrers ellipsoids independent of time. Previous studies on this subject used either particle approaches or treated the bar potential in an incorrect way. The gaseous medium is assumed to be infinitesimally-thin, isothermal, unmagnetized, and initially uniform. To study the effects of various environments on the gas evolution, we vary the gas sound speed as well as the mass of a SMBH located at the center of a galaxy. An introduction of the bar potential produces bar substructure including a pair of dust lane shocks, a nuclear ring, and nuclear spirals. The sound speed affects the position and strength of the bar substructure significantly. As the sound speed increases, the dust lane shocks tend to move closer to the bar major axis, resulting in a smaller-size nuclear ring at the galactocentric radius of about 1 kpc. Nuclear spirals that develop inside a nuclear ring can persist only when either sound speed is low or in the presence of a SMBH; they would otherwise be destroyed by the ring material with eccentric orbits. The mass inflow rates of gas toward the galactic center is also found to be proportional to the sound speed. We find that the sound speed should be 15 km/s or larger if the mass inflow rate is to explain nuclear activities in Seyfert galaxies.

  • This paper focuses on the buckling capacity of a hybrid grid shell. The eigenvalue buckling, geometrical non-linear elastic buckling and elasto-plastic buckling analyses of the hybrid structure were carried out. Then the influences of the shape and scale of imperfections on the elasto-plastic buckling loads were discussed. Also, the effects of different structural parameters, such as the rise-to-span ratio, beam section, area and pre-stress of cables and boundary conditions, on the failure load were investigated. Based on the comparison between elastic and elasto-plastic buckling loads, the effect of material non-linearity on the stability of the hybrid barrel vault is found significant. Furthermore, the stability of a hybrid barrel vault is sensitive to the anti-symmetrical distribution of loads. It is also shown that the structures are highly imperfection sensitive which can greatly reduce their failure loads. The results also show that the support conditions pose significant effect on the elasto-plastic buckling load of a perfect hybrid structure.

  • In this study, in-cylinder flow of the swirl chamber type diesel engine numerically simulated by VECTIS code. The flow fields during the intake and compression process were also investigated in detail. Numerical results revealed that the generation and distortion of the swirling, tumbling vortices and those influences on turbulence kinetic energy by shape of the jet passage, angle and area. It was also found that flow characteristics were affected by inflow velocity that depends on change of the jet passage shape. Swirl ratio was increased according to decrease of jet passage area, and was affected by piston motion according to increase of jet passage angle. Tumbling vortices had the similar in various cases, but tumble ratio was increased with the inflow velocity. The generation of turbulence kinetic energy was considerably influenced by complex effects of swirling and tumbling vortices.

  • Copper films were prepared by using ECR-MOCVD(Electron Cyclotron Resonance Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition) coupled with a DC bias system. The DC bias is connected to the electrode which placed 1∼3cm above the polymer substrate. The pulse electrical field around the electrode attracts the positive charged copper ions generated from the dissociation of copper precursor, $Cu(hfac)_2$, under ECR plasma. Condensation of supersaturated copper ions in the space between the electrode and substrate, makes it possible to deposit copper film on the polymer substrate even at room temperature. In this study, optimization of the electrode configuration was carried out in order to obtain the uniform films. The uniformity of the deposited films were closely related to the parameters of electrode geometry such as electrode shape, thickness, grid size and the spacing between electrodes. The most uniform copper film was observed with the electrode that enabled uniform electrical field distribution across the whole dimension of electrode.

  • A single-stage AC-AC converter has been designed for a wind energy conversion system (WECS) that eliminates multistage operation and DC-link filter elements, thus resolving size, weight, and reliability issues. A simple switching strategy is used to control the switches that changes the variable-frequency AC output of an electrical generator to a constant-frequency supply to feed into a distributed electrical load/grid. In addition, a modified random sinusoidal pulse width modulation (RSPWM) technique has been developed for the designed converter to make the overall system more efficient by increasing generating power capacity and reducing the effects of inter-harmonics and sub-harmonics generated in the WECS. The technique uses carrier and reference waves of variable switching frequency to calculate the firing angles of the switches of the converter so that the three-phase output voltage of the converter is very close to a sine wave with reduced THD. A comparison of the performance of the proposed RSPWM technique with the conventional SPWM demonstrated that the power generated by a turbine in the proposed approximately increased by 5% to 10% and THD reduces by 40% both in voltage and current with respect to conventional SPWM.

  • Wing-in-Ground vehicles and aerodynamically assisted boats take advantage of increased lift and reduced drag of wing sections in the ground proximity. At relatively low speeds or heavy payloads of these craft, a flap at the wing trailing-edge can be applied to boost the aerodynamic lift. The influence of a flap on the two-dimensional NACA 4412 airfoil in viscous ground-effect flow is numerically investigated in this study. The computational method consists of a steady-state, incompressible, finite volume method utilizing the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. Grid generation and solution of the Navier-Stokes equations are completed using computer program Fluent. The code is validated against published experimental and numerical results of unbounded flow with a flap, as well as ground-effect motion without a flap. Aerodynamic forces are calculated, and the effects of angle of attack, Reynolds number, ground height, and flap deflection are presented for a split and plain flap. Changes in the flow introduced with the flap addition are also discussed. Overall, the use of a flap on wings with small attack angles is found to be beneficial for small flap deflections up to 5% of the chord, where the contribution of lift augmentation exceeds the drag increase, yielding an augmented lift-to-drag ratio.

  • Nowadays, it is necessary to accelerate the construction of new power plant in face of rising energy demand in such a way that the electricity will be generated at the lowest cost while reducing emissions caused by that generation. The expansion planning is one of the most important issues in electricity management. Nuclear energy comes forward with the low-carbon technology and increasing competitiveness to expand the share of generated energy by introducing Gen IV reactors. In this paper, the generation expansion planning of these new Gen reactors is investigated using the WASP software. Iran power grid is selected as a case of study. We present a comparison of the twenty-one year perspective on the future with the development of (1) traditional thermal power plants and Gen II reactors, (2) Gen III + reactors with traditional thermal power plants, (3) Gen IV reactors and traditional thermal power plants, (4) Gen III + reactors and the new generation of the thermal power plant, (5) the new generation of thermal power plants and the Gen IV reactors. The results show that the Gen IV reactors have the most developing among other types of power plants leading to reduce the operating costs and emissions. The obtained results show that the use of new Gen of combined cycle power plant and Gen IV reactors make the emissions and cost to be reduced to 16% and 72% of Gen II NPPs and traditional thermal power plants, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study is quantitative analysis of the effects of the interactions between stream network and hillslope to hydrologic response functions. To this end general formulation of hydrologic response function is performed based on width function and grid framework. Target basins are Ipyeong and Tanbu basins. From the results of width function estimation even similar sized and closely located basins could have very different hydrologic response function. It is found out that the interactions between stream network and hillslope are essential factors of rainfall-runoff processes because their difference can make the hydrologic response function with positive skewness. The change of velocities of stream network and hillslope might influence the magnitude of peak but time to peak tends to more sensitively respond to velocities of stream network. Lag time of basin would be the result of complex interaction between drainage structures and dynamic properties of river basin.
