  • Agricultural income is calculated with producer price, output and management cost. This study compared organic farming with conventional one for agricultural income, producer price and output by items. And then it proposed the method of item selection and crop system from a diversification point of view. The coefficient of variation to producer prices in organic farming was 4.7%, and conventional one was 30.3% because organic products have been produced in a system of contract farming with consumers' cooperative. This result means the price of organic products is stabler than that of conventional price. And agricultural income of organic farming has been generally known more than that of conventional one. However, agricultural gross income of conventional farming was more than that of organic one by 20.3% in 2010. It was caused by output reduction of a few items(fer example; onion, large green onion, potato and young pumpkin) due to freak weather conditions and constant producer price for several years in organic farming. In order to increase agricultural income, appropriate crop selection and system should be introduced to organic farming. A principal crop is the rice plant and 2 subordinate crops are dry crops at bare field and greenhouse respectively. Thus 5 crop systems that agricultural gross income are relatively increased larger among 15 crop systems estimated are rice+ginger+cucumber, rice+ginger+tomato, rice+large green onion+cucumber, rice+sweet potato+cucumber and rice+onion+ cucumber.

  • We examined the effect of two greenhouse covering materials (glass or solid polycarbonate sheets) on the light environment and growth of tomato and cucumber plants. Spectral analysis showed that polycarbonate sheets entirely blocked radiation in both the UV - B (300 - 320 nm) and UV - A (320 - 400 nm) ranges, whereas glass transmitted UV - A and was only opaque to UV - B. The transmittance of photosynthetically active radiation (400 - 700 nm) and near infrared radiation (700 - 1100 nm) was higher in polycarbonate than glass. Air and soil temperatures were not significantly different between greenhouses covered with either material. The growth of cucumber plants was slightly affected by covering materials, whereas no significant changes in growth parameters were observed for tomato plants. The color parameters of tomato fruits were affected by the cover material, whereas cucumber fruits showed similar coloration in both glass and polycarbonate greenhouses.

  • Antagonistic rhizobacteria, more specifically fluorescent pseudomonads and certain species of Bacillus, are known as biocontrol agents of fungal root diseases of agronomic crops. In this study, 144 bacteria were isolated from cucumber rhizosphere and screened as potential biological control agents against Phytophthora drechsleri, the causal agent of cucumber root rot, in vitro condition. Non-volatile compounds of 23 isolates showed noticeable inhibition zone (> 30%) against P. drechsleri, whereas volatile compounds of 7 isolates could prevent more than 30% of the mycelial growth of the fungus. All promising isolates, except of Pseudomonas flourescens V69, promoted significantly plant growth under in vitro condition. P. flourescens CV69 and V11 exhibited the highest colonization on the root. Results of the greenhouse studies showed that a reduction in disease incidence by use of some strains, and particularly use of strains CV6 and V11 as a soil treatment, exhibited a reduction in disease incidence so that suppressed disease by 85.71 and 69.39% respectively. Pseudomonas flourescens CV6 significantly suppressed disease in comparison to Ridomil fungicide. The use of mixture bacterial strains in the soil inoculated by the fungus resulting in falling down the most of the plants which didn't show significant difference with infected control soils without bacteria.

  • In greenhouse vegetable, the automatic control in cultivating environment has been projected as a national business ; especially a countermeasure against the settlement of UR negotiation. Because it makes possible to manage a large greenhouse with family-hands and to expect the betterment of quality and the increasement of harvest in crops. In the course of carrying the workout, however, there are many problems with the overall control system with computers as well as the individual systems for environment control because of hardware and software problems : especially the shortage of data for development of the system is most serious. Among the many problems for development of the automatic control system, the automations of irrigation, liquefied fertilizer and chemical solution, mixing and ventilation, etc and the development of the general automatic controller system for environment control in greenhouse are studied, which requires a lot of tabors. The results are summarized as follows ; 1. In moisture control by the soil moisture meter, the error was shown 10 % in the beginning irrigation point and 19 % in the stop irrigation point. 2. The supply of liquefied fertilizers with the irrigation system was excellent by setting the operating time and the mixing ratio. 3. The developed chemical spraying system was operated well, but not perfect in nozzle positions. 4. The cucumber was cultivated properly with the trickle irrigation system. 5. The developed controller for the automatic control system in greenhouse was remarkable in the part of hardware, but more researches are needed in the part of software.

  • Effectiveness of Orius strigicollis (Poppius) and Amblyseius cucumeris (Oudemans) as natural enemies against thrips were evaluated on greenhouse green pepper, sweet pepper and cucumber respectively. Control efficacy was calculated by the formula, $(D_{control}-D_{treatment})/D_{control}{\times}100$, where $D_{control}$ is the average density of thrips on the plots in which any natural enemy was not released and $D_{treatment}$ is the average density of thrips on the plots in which natural enemies were released respectively. As a result, control efficacies of O. strigicollis against Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) on green pepper and sweet pepper were $14.3{\sim}99.5%$ and $21.6{\sim}98.3%$, respectively. In addition, control efficacy of it against Thrips palmi Kany on cucumber was 61.2-74.4%. Control efficacies of A. cucumeris against F. occidentalis on green pepper and sweet pepper were $12.9{\sim}38.3%$ and $17.1{\sim}87.0%$, respectively. Control efficacy of it against T. palmi on cucumber was $90.4{\sim}97.4%$. Field evaluation showed that the prompt applications of natural enemies were effective to reduce the density of thrips. In detail, to control F. occidentalis effectively on green pepper and sweet pepper in spring season, five to six individuals of O. strigicollis per crops should be released three to six times continuously. To control T. palmi effectively on cucumber in autumn, more than 100 individuals of A. cucumeris per crop should be released four times repeatedly.

  • In greenhouse, data on evapotranspiration or water consumption is important for the rational water management, irrigation planning, thermal environment analysis, and watering automation. But little investigations have been attempted to make clear the characteristics of water consumption in greenhouse. In this paper, evapotransplrations of lettuce and cucumber by cropping systems were investigated. And the correlations among evapotranspiration, pan evaporation, solar radiation, mean air temperature, and minimum relative humidity were analyzed. Experimental cropping systems of lettuce were soil culture and NFT system. Those of cucumber were soil culture, perlite culture, and rockwool culture. Total water consumption of lettuce was 2.62$\ell$/plant in soil culture and 1.71$\ell$/plant in NFT system. That of cucumber was 45.22$\ell$/plant in soil culture, 27.45$\ell$/plant in rockwool culture and 29.06$\ell$/plant in perlite culture. Therefore total water consumption of soil culture showed higher than soilless culture.

  • Vegetables production in greenhouse are typically intensely managed with high inputs of fertilizers and irrigation water, which increases the risk of ground-water nitrate contamination. In 2010 and 2011, a study was conducted to determine the appropriate depth of soil moisture sensor for automatic irrigation control to use water and nitrogen efficiently under subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) systems. The irrigation line for SDI placed 30 cm below soil surface and tensiometer was used as soil moisture sensor. Three tensiometer treatments placed at 10 (SDI-T10), 20 (SDI-T20) and 30 cm (SDI-T30) depths below soil surface under SDI. These are also compared to SUR-T20 treatment where tensiometer placed at 20 cm below soil surface under surface drip irrigation (SUR) systems. The growth of cucumber was not statistically different between SUR and SDI without SDI-T30 treatment. Fruit yields (Mg/ha) were 57.0 and 56.9 (SDI-T10), 56.0 and 60.5 (SDI-T20), 40.9 and 41.2 (SDI-T30) and 56.6 and 54.3 (SUR-T20) for 2010 and 2011, respectively. Slightly higher total yield was observed in tensiometer placed 20 cm below the soil surface, although no significant differences were found between SDI-T10 and SDI-T20 under SDI treatments. In addition, nitrogen application rates and daily irrigation rates were lowest in SDI-T20 compared with other SDIs and SUR treatments. Nitrogen and daily irrigation application under SDI-T20 was lower than that under SUR-T20 by 6.0%. These findings suggested tensiometer 20 cm depth under SDI systems was best for cucumber production in greenhouse.

  • This study investigated the effect of organic materials (Bordeaux, Loess-sulfur) and the removal of apical shoot against downy mildew disease on cucumber cultivated in greenhouse. Five kinds of Bordeaux were made by adjusting mixing ratio of lime and copper sulfate in order to elucidate the optimal combination. The 4-6type Bordeaux was selected as the most effective combination for controlling cucumber downy mildew. Loess-sulfur showed inhibitory activity against cucumber downey mildew, but it was less effective than Bordeaux. It was confirmed that apical shoot cutting could reduce the incidence of cucumber downy mildew disease by 56.3%. When apical shoots of susceptible cucumber variety were cut at different leaf stages, disease incidence by early apical shoot cutting treatment was lower than that of late apical shoot cutting treatment. However in a resistant variety, 'Heukryungsamcheok', disease incidences of all cucumber apical shoot cutting treatments were lower than that of non-cutting treatment, but there was no differences between apical shoot cutting treatments due to low disease incidences. In addition, when organic materials and apical shoot cutting treatment were carried out in parallel, the combined treatments of organic materials and apical shoot cutting showed low disease incidence of cucumber downy mildew compared to untreated control. The lowest disease incidence of cucumber downy mildew was recorded in the combined treatment of 4-6type Bordeaux and apical shoot cutting. This study confirmed that apical shoot cutting can reduce the disease incidence of cucumber downy mildew and the combined treatment of apical shoot cutting and organic materials showed higher suppressive effect against cucumber downy mildew.

  • Five year term study from 2002 to 2006 was carried out to examine the effects of continuous long-term application of swine liquid manure on soil chemical properties including heavy metal contents and yield of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) and cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) in a greenhouse. Treatments were conventional chemical fertilizers and three types of swine slurry; Slurry composting and biofiltration (SCB), Thermophilic aerobic oxidation (TAO), and Bio-mineral water (BMW). Total nitrogen level of the SCB, TAO, and BMW was 0.47%, 0.09%, and less than 0.01%, respectively. The heavy metal contents of the three liquid manures were much lower than the Korean regulation level. The soil phosphorus, potassium, and heavy metal contents after five year continuous application of swine slurry were not significantly higher than those of chemical fertilizer use. Contents of heavy metals in leaves of the crops did not show significant difference among treatments. The levels of copper and zinc, plant essential elements, in leaves were in the range of optimum plant growth. Yields of tomato and cucumber for swine liquid manures were not significantly different from that of chemical fertilizer. The results implied that the three types of swine slurry may not deteriorate soil chemical properties including phosphate and trace elements in greenhouse soils when they are applied as a basal fertilization at a recommended nitrogen rate based on soil testing.
