Prymnesium patelliferum was collected from Hwajinpo, South Korea in November 2002. This is the first record of P. patelliferum in Korea waters. The characteristic shape of P. patelliferum was that of a rice grain. Cells were sub spherical or elongate, and sometimes slightly compressed. The motile cells of P. patelliferum (8-10 ㎛ long, 5-6 ㎛ broad) prossessed two equal or sub equal flagella(10.5-13 ㎛) and a short non-coiling haptonema (3-5 ㎛). The cell was covered by two layers of organic scales, which were important taxonomic characteristics. Internal scales were a narrow inflexed rim on the distal face, a thickening central and radial fibrillar pattern. External scales were very similar to internal scales with relatively tall upright rims. The ridges were in quadrants with 11-12 ridges per quadrant.
2-Acylaminobenzothiazole derivatives were synthesized from 2-aminobenzothiazole and acylchloride. Benzothiazolylurea derivatives were syntesized from 2-minobenzothiazole and phenylisocyanate. The products were identified by UV, IR, $^1H-NMR$, $^{13}C-NMR$ spectra with 2-acetamidobenzothiazole(I), 2-propionamidobenzothiazole(II), 2-butamidobenzothiazole(III), 2-benzamidobenzothiazole(IV). The compounds were tested for their phytotoxicity on the germination and seedling growth of rice, radish and green pea plants, It was found that treatment of 500ppm concentration each of 2-acetamidobentothiazole, 2-propionarmidobenzothiazole and 2-butamidobenzothiazole strongly inhibited of seedling growth of the radish and green pea.
Antioxidative noudle products were developed with mixed material and antioxidative liquid extracted from natural products. Matrrials were mixed with wheat flour, rice flour, starch and green tea. 3% of green tea was suitable mixing ratio from the mastication data of texture meter, and proper water contents were 33% to prepare these noodles. The suitable mixing ratio of materials were wheat flour(85%), starch( 12%) and greentea(3%) from the physical data of texture meter. Since AUC value of antioxidative liquid was more higher than that of tap water, antioxidative noodle products were expected for good health and preservation of some diseases.
The experiments were conducted to examine the effects of sulfur dioxide on catalase activity in germinating seeds under dark conditions and in green plants under light conditions. Three kinds of plants, bean (Glycine max M.), cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. Chungbang No.1) and rice (Oryza sativa L. Suwon No.213-1) were used in this study. Both thegerminating seeds and the leaves were treated with various concentrations of sulfur dioxide for both one green plants with two and twelve hours. In the results of the measurement of catalase activity it was found that plant injuries by sulfur dioxide for the period of photosynthesis were higher than those for the period of respiration. In the control, apparent catalase activity under the light condition of photosynthesis showed a considerable decrease in comparison with catalase activity under the dark condition of respiration. This tendency also appeared markedly in the gas treatment. In the gas treatment for twelve hours, the decrease of catalase activity was higher than that of one hour in both photosynthesis and respiraton. It was thought that sulfur dioxide was an inhibitor of catalase activity in higher concentration of the gas.
The aquatic fern Azolla spp. is of value as a bio-fertilizer for wetland paddy. It is popular and cultivated widely in other countries like China, Vietnam, and the Philippines, but has yet to be taken up in Korea, in a big way. It fixes nitrogen as high as 3-5kg N per day, because it contains nitrogen fixing blue-green algae, Anabaena azollae. Azolla's ability to create a light-proof mat that suppresses other weeds has been used for centuries in rice production. Azolla spp. has also the capacity to take up the heavy metals such as Mercury and Chromium (75${\sim}$100%) and may be used as a bioaccumulator in the phytoremediation. Azolla meal also can be used as an unconventional feed resource has a potential as a feedstuff for livestock.
The present study was surveyed for the normal meal and particular folk meal in east cot area in Kyungpook province, Pohang, Youngduk, and Uljin areas. The results are as below: Most subjects for surveying were 30-40 years old and permanent residents in those areas. For the normal meal, the boiled rice was the top main dishes among 18 main dishes. The folloing upper five main dishes were boiled bean rice, boiled barley rice, boiled miscellaneous cereals rice, noodles, and Bbimbab (miced rice with cooked various vegetables and meats). Less frequent main dishes were raw fish Bbimbab and the various fish soups etc. The two upper side dishes, out of 17 surveyed ones, were kimchi and soybean paste soup. Twelve dishes(about 70%) out of 17 side dishes, the loach soup, the marinated and fermented raw fishes (fish Sikhae'), the baked mackerel, the pickled fishes, the friedsardine, the green seaweed, and the quid, etc. were made from the sea products. For the particular folk meal, about 30 kinds of the specific folk food items of this area were surveyed: Gudungchi' Sikhae', which was made with seaweed, out of the 11 kinds of fish Sikhae', raw fish(Whae') in water, Sigumjang', a salty agar, a steamed seaweed which was covered with the flour or bean power the various kinds of fish soups, the various kinds of fish stews were the particular folk side dishes in these areas. The dietary habit in these east coast areas were affected by the various sea food products, the fishes and the seaweeds, which were acquired easily through four season in these area.
The expressed sequence tags(ESTs) from immature seed of rice, Oryza sativa cv Milyang 23, were partially sequenced and analyzed by homology. As of 1998, the partial sequences of about 6,600 cDNA clones were analyzed from normal and normalized immature seed cDNA libraries. About 2,200 ESTs were putatively identified by BLASTX deduced amino acid sequence homology analysis. About 20% of them were putatively identified as storage proteins. Also the clones were highly homologous to genes involved particularly in starch biosynthesis, glycolysis, signal transduction and defenses. Compared to 35% of redundancy in the ESTs of normal cDNA library, that from the substracted library was 15%. The Korea Rice Genome Network is maintained to provide the updated information of sequences, their homologies and sequence alignments of ESTs. For the stable expression of transgene in rice, diverse vectors were developed for overexpression, targeting and gene dosage effect with transit peptides (Tp) and matrix attachment region (MAR) sequence from chicken lysozyme locus. The rice calli were transformed via Agrobacterium tumefaciens LBA4404(pSB1) with the triparental mating technique and selected by herbicide resistance. The green fluorescent protein(GFP) gene in expression vector under the control of rbcS promoter-Tp was overexpressed upto 10 % of the total soluble protein. In addition, the Tp-sGFP fusion protein was properly processed during translocation into chloroplast. The expression of sGFP in the presence of MAR sequences was analyzed with Northern and immunoblot analysis. All the lines in which sGFP transgene with MAR sequence, showed position independent and copy number-dependent expression, while the lines without MAR showed the varied level of expression with the integration site. Thus the MAR sequence significantly reduced the variation in transgene expression between independent transformants.
Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) produces a putative effector, XoAvrBs2. We expressed XoAvrBs2 homologously in Xoo with a TAP-tag at the C-terminus to enable quantitative analysis of protein expression and secretion. Addition of rice leaf extracts from both Xoo-sensitive and Xoo-resistant rice cultivars to the Xoo cells induced expression of the XoAvrBs2 gene at the transcriptional and translational levels, and also stimulated a remarkable amount of XoAvrBs2 secretion into the medium. In a T3SS-defective Xoo mutant strain, secretion of the TAPtagged XoAvrBs2 was blocked. Thus, we elucidated the transcriptional and translational expressions of the XoAvrBs2 gene in Xoo was induced in vitro by the interaction with rice and the induced secretion of XoAvrBs2 was T3SSdependent. It is the first report to measure the homologous expression and secretion of XoAvrBs2 in vitro by rice leaf extract. Our system for the quantitative analysis of effector protein expression and secretion could be generally used for the study of host-pathogen interactions.

Scaffolds of cell substrates are biophysical platforms for cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation. They ultimately play a leading-edge role in the regeneration of tissues. Recent studies have shown the potential of bioactive scaffolds (i.e., osteo-inductive) through 3D printing. In this study, rice bran-derived biocomposite was fabricated for fused deposition modeling (FDM)-based 3D printing as a potential bone-graft analogue. Rice bran by-product was blended with poly caprolactone (PCL), a synthetic commercial biodegradable polymer. An extruder with extrusion process molding was adopted to manufacture the newly blended "green material." Processing conditions affected the performance of these blends. Bio-filament composite was characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Mechanical characterization of bio-filament composite was carried out to determine stress-strain and compressive strength. Biological behaviors of bio-filament composites were also investigated by assessing cell cytotoxicity and water contact angle. EDX results of bio-filament composites indicated the presence of organic compounds. These bio-filament composites were found to have higher tensile strength than conventional PCL filament. They exhibited positive response in cytotoxicity. Biological analysis revealed better compatibility of r-PCL with rice bran. Such rice bran blended bio-filament composite was found to have higher elongation and strength compared to control PCL.
In reality, it is a green revolution of the entire agricultural matrix in Korea that integrated pest control plays an important role in the possible breakthrough in rice self-sufficiency. In paddy agroecosystem as man-modified environment, rice is newly established every year by transplantation under diverse water regimes which affect a microclimate. Standing water benefits rice by regulating the microclimate, but it favors the multiplication of certain pets through the amelioration of the microclimate. Further, the introduction of high yielding varieties with the changing of cultural practices results in changing occurrence pattern of certain pests. In general, japonica type varieties lack genes resistant to most of the important pests and insect-borne virus diseases, whereas indica type possesses more genes conferring varietal resistance. Thus, this differences among indica type, form the background of different approaches to pest management. The changes in rice cultivation such as double cropping, growing high-yielding varieties requiring heavy fertilization, earlier transplanting, intensvie-spacing transplanting, and intensive pesticide use as a consequence of the adoption of improves rice production technology, have intensified the pest problems rather than reduced them. The cultivation of resistant varieties are highly effective to the pest, their long term stability is threathened because of the development of new biotypes which can detroy these varieties. So far, three biotypes of N. lugens are reported in Korea. Since each resistant variety is expected to maintain several years the sequential release of another new variety with a different gene at intervals is practised as a gene rotation program. Another approach, breeding multilines that have more than two genes for resistance in a variety are successfully demonstrated. The average annual rice losses during the last 15 years of 1977-’91 are 9.3% due to insect pests without chemical control undertaken, wehreas there is a average 2.4% despite farmers’insecticide application at the same period. In other words, the average annual losses are prvented by 6.9% when chemical control is properly employed. However, the continuous use of a same group of insecticides is followed by the development of pest resistance. Resistant development of C. suppressalis, L. striatellus and N. cincticeps is observed to organophosphorous insecticides by the mid-1960s, and to carbamates by the early 1970s in various parts of the country. Thus, it is apparent that a scheduled chemical control for rice production systems becomes uneconomical and that a reduction in energy input without impairing the rice yield, is necessarily improved through the implementation of integrated pest management systems. Nationwide pest forecasting system conducted by the government organization is a unique network of investigation for purpose of making pest control timely in terms of economic thresholds. A wise plant protection is expected to establish pest management systems in appropriate integration of resistant varieties, biological agents, cultural practices and other measures in harmony with minimizing use of chemical applications as a last weapon relying on economic thresholds.
