  • To evaluate the possibility of charcoal as Green Infrastructure (GI) materials, data such as moisture content, amount of adsorbed water, and amount of evaporation were collected. Some data from previous study were referenced to find out if correlations exist between results in this study and previous study. Only porosity was directly related to moisture content. Two mechanical charcoal had better abilities than traditional charcoal in all three categories. Mechanical black charcoal chips produced by National Forestry Cooperative Federation (NFCFC) adsorbed 333.3% of water in thirty minutes, 297.5% in five minutes, and evaporated around 75% water in four days. This ability is much higher than other five charcoal. Even though results of test showed various degrees and NFCFC was the best as GI materials, data of charcoal were also within acceptable range based on generally accepted characteristics of GI materials.

  • Nowadays, stormwaters have been affected by urbanization and climate change. These transition can cause many problems for hydrologic cycle by increasing runoff volume like flood and low water quality. As with other metropolises and peninsulas, Busan has involved with these problems too. Therefore, it is really vital to do some arrangements to solve them by low impact development (LID) technology. In fact, LID has been introduced to reduce runoff by applying some techniques such as green infrastructure (GI). In order to deal with the aforementioned issues in Busan, this study attempts to design and construct a hybrid green roof-planter box system at Pusan National University GI/LID Facility based on local weather. For this purpose, we used experiment and modeling method on some planter boxes and optimized them by trial and error method.

이러한 OLS와 MLR 모델들의 정확도를 PBIAS(Percent Bias), NSE(Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency), RSR(RMSE-observations standard deviation ratio)을 통해 분석할 수 있다.

  • Cities in Korea have rapidly urbanized and they are not well prepared for natural disasters which have been increased by climate change. In particular, they often struggle with urban flooding. Recently, green infrastructure has been emphasized as a critical strategy for flood mitigation in developed countries due to its capability to infiltrate water into the ground, provide the ability to absorb and store rainfall, and contribute to mitigating floods. However, in Korea, green infrastructure planning only focuses on esthetic functions or accessibility, and does not think how other functions such as flood mitigation, can be effectively realized. Based on this, we address this critical gap by suggesting the new green infrastructure planning framework for improving urban water cycle and maximizing flood mitigation capacity. This framework includes flood vulnerability assessment for identifying flood risk area and deciding suitable locations for green infrastructure. We propose the use of the combination of frequency ratio model and GIS for flood vulnerability assessment. The framework also includes the selection process of green infrastructure practices under local conditions such as geography, flood experience and finance. Finally, we applied this planning framework to the case study area, namely YeonJe-gu an Nam-gu in Busan. We expect this framework will be incorporated into green infrastructure spatial planning to provide effective decision making process regarding location and design of green infrastructure.

  • We've compared and conceptually evaluated the newly emerging concept of nature-based solutions (NbS's), in the aspect of water management, and existing similar solutions of different naming, all of which are based on ecosystem functions. In this study, it is found that NbS's seem significant and meaningful both educationally and understandably in the aspect that it can comprehensively cover and include the existing methodologies and solutions using the functions of natural ecosystem to socio-environmental challenges. It, however, seems not quite different from the broad-meaning of green infra, including Eco-DRR, in terms of the approaching methodologies in water management. The conceptual and spatial hierarchy of each practice in water management considered in this study can be expressed in the narrowing order of NbS-(EE)-BGI-(CRT)-GI-LID. Last, the term LID, which is the best management practice for storm water management in the development project, can be replaced with the term GI for clarification and less confusion both in academia and practice.

  • Due to the global climate change, the rainfall volume and frequency on the Korean Peninsula are predicted to increase at the end of the 21st century. In addition, impervious surface areas have increased due to rapid urbanization which has caused the urban water cycle to deteriorate. Green Infrastructure (GI) researches have been conducted to improve the water cycle soundness; the efficiency of this technique has been verified through various studies. However, there are still no suitable GI design guidelines for this aspect. Therefore, the rainfall scenarios are set up for each percentile (60, 70, 80, 90) based on the volume and frequency analysis using 10-year rainfall data (Busan Meteorological Station). After determining the GI areas for each scenario, the runoff reduction characteristics are analyzed based on Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) 10-year rainfall-runoff-simulations. The total runoff reduction efficiency for each GI areas are computed to have a range of 13.1~52.1%. As a results of the quantitative analysis, the design rainfall for GI is classified into the 80~85 percentile in the study site.
