  • In the modern society, the extreme weather caused by climate change has brought about exceptional damage in succession over the world due to the use of fossil fuels, and infectious diseases such as COVID-19 worsen the quality of human life. It is urgently necessary to reduce green-house gas and use new renewable energy. The global environmental pollution should be decreased by reducing the use of fossil fuels and using new renewable energy. This paper suggests a system which can function for the environment of four seasons, safety and communication, through the photovoltaic power-based intelligent CCTV, internet and WiFi, and cooling and heating systems, and can optimally manage power, through the real-time monitoring of the production and the consumption of the photovoltaic power. It suggests a hybrid generation system supporting diesel generation without discontinuation in the case of emergency such as system power outage caused by cold waves, typhoons and natural disasters in which the photovoltaic power generating system cannot be used.

  • Since the Republic of Korea is highly dependent on fossil fuels despite high oil prices, it urgently needs to renew its economic and social system to cut carbon emissions and achieve green growth. Therefore, reforming or eliminating subsidies related to the use of fossil fuels is a timely and oppropriate policy recommendation for Korea. It would be a win-win deal for Korean society as it would not only reduce the use of environmentally harmful fossil fuels but also enhance economic efficiency. In particular, cross-subsidies for industrial, agricultural and night thermal-storage power services make up more than 80 percent of all subsidies provided to the entire electric power industry sector of Korea. Of these cross-subsidies, this paper analyzes the electricity subsidy for industries, which takes up the largest share (about KRW 1.6583 trillion yearly), among the environmentally harmful subsidies in the electric power sector. Thus, the paper focuses on the analysis of ripple effect anticipated when this is reformed. To examine the effects of this subsidy reform, price elasticities were estimated using the ARDL (autoregressive distributed lag) model and quarterly data from 1990 to 2007. The main results of this study show that 1) annual energy demand for electric power in the industrial sector would drop by 12,475,930MWh and 2) $CO_2$ emissions would plummet by 2,644,897 tons per year if the subsidy were reformed. We can deduct from this that the abolition of environmentally harmful subsidies in the electric power sector in the Republic of Korea would considerably contribute to $CO_2$ emissions abatement in the country.

  • 'Low Carbon, Green Growth' may be the achievable target in industry section, depending on whether less reliance on fossil-fuels use can bring higher productivity growth in the long run. This paper tests for the short-run and long-run effects of investment on energy-saving equipments on productivity growth in the Korean manufacturing industries. The investment in energy efficiency causes an increase in costs (measurement effect) in the short-run, but in the long-run likely improve energy intensity and reduce costs (positive real effect) despite the delay in new other investment for technical innovation (negative real effect). A 2SLS regression was attempted to deal with endogeneity of energy-saving investment. The productivity effects were tested for five manufacturing sub-industries showing relatively high energy intensity with annual time series data from 1982 through 2006. No productivity effects were accepted for all five sub-industries except Chemical products. Positive real effect was considered to be exceeded by negative real effect, resulting in decreased productivity growth for Chemical products.

  • Due to global decarbonization movement and tightening of maritime emissions restrictions, the shipping industry is going to switch to alternative fuels. Among candidates of alternative fuel, methanol is promising for decreasing SOx and CO2 emissions, resulting in minimum climate change and meeting the goal of green shipping. In this study, a novel combined system of direct methanol solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), gas turbine (GT), and organic Rankine cycle (ORC) targeted for marine vessels was proposed. The SOFC is the main power generator of the system, whereas the GT and PEMFC could recover waste heat from the SOFC to generate useful power and increase waste heat utilizing efficiency of the system. Thermodynamics model of the combined system and each component were established and analyzed. Energy and exergy efficiencies of subsystems and the entire system were estimated with participation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics. The energy and exergy efficiencies of the overall multigeneration system were estimated to be 76.2% and 30.3%, respectively. The combination of GT and PEMFC increased the energy efficiency by 18.91% compared to the SOFC stand-alone system. By changing the methanol distribution ratio from 0.05 to 0.4, energy and exergy efficiencies decreased by 15.49% and 5.41%, respectively. During the starting up and maneuvering period of vessels, a quick response from the power supply system and propulsion plant is necessary. Utilization of PEMFC coupled with SOFC has remarkable meaning and benefits.

  • Carbon neutrality refers to a state in which there is no global increase in CO2 emissions due to human activities. In Korea, for carbon neutrality, green remodeling of existing buildings and customized support tasks for zero energy in new buildings are presented. Germany is showing fundamental changes in energy supply, such as applying renewable energy and higher energy efficiency from nuclear and fossil fuels, which were the existing energy sources. In this study, how Germany establishes policies for carbon neutrality at each state level and the cases applied to increase the energy efficiency of the actually applied residential complexes are analyzed based on this. As a result of the case complex analysis, it was found that the construction direction was being promoted as a zero-energy complex or a carbon-neutral complex by gradually reducing the energy demand in buildings and supplying additional energy with new and renewable energy in the low-energy building distribution in the 1990s. In Germany's ecological complex, energy standards have been strengthened from low-energy architecture to plus-energy architecture over time, and annual heating energy consumption standards and heat transmittance rates for each structure have been achieved at a higher level. The results of this analysis will serve as basic data and derivation of applicable items when planning residential complex development and remodeling of existing buildings for the domestic carbon-neutral goal in the future.

  • The new qualitative and quantitative analytical method for hydrocarbon compounds in DME-LPG blending fuel, mixing dimethyl ether (DME) with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), by using gas chromatography (GC) was investigated. It is difficult to analyze all components of DME-LPG blending fuel by using single column in GC due to consisting of the non-polar LPG and the polar DME which is oxygen-containing compound. Therefore, it has been introduced the Deans switching system, which are useful for analyzing mixtures of a very different nature and/or target analytes in very complex matrix. This technique is to control the pressure between two columns and to selectively change the path of effluent flows to either one of two columns. As a result, we found that DME and LPG can be completely separated at the different columns and the determination of all hydrocarbon compounds in DME-LPG blending fuel can be achieved to this method qualitatively and quantitatively during the operation of one injection. In addition, this method can be applied to the determination of trace components of by-product, such as methanol, methyl formate and ethyl methyl ether, which will be derived from DME synthesis process.

  • The emission of carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels has been identified as a major contributor to green house emissions and subsequent global warming and climate changes. For these reasons, it is necessary to separate and recover $CO_2$ gas. A new process based on gas hydrate crystallization is proposed for the $CO_2$ separation/recovery of the gas mixture. In this study, gas hydrate from $CO_2/H_2$ gas mixtures was formed in a semi-batch stirred vessel at a constant pressure and temperature. This mixture is of interest to $CO_2$ separation and recovery in Integrated Coal Gasification (IGCC) plants. The impact of tetrahydrofuran (THF) on hydrate formation from the $CO_2/H_2$ was observed. The addition of THF not only reduced the equilibrium formation conditions significantly but also helped ease the formation of hydrates. This study illustrates the concept and provides the basic operations of the separation/recovery of $CO_2$ (pre-combustion capture) from a fuel gas ($CO_2/H_2$) mixture.
