The Hypocholesterolemic Effect of Green Tea EGCG Was Not Mediated Via the Stimulation of the Low-Density Lipoprotein Receptor Gene Expression in Cholesterol-Fed Rats

  • Green tea, which has high polyphenols amount, is thought to have hypocholesterolemic effects. The present study was performed to further examine the hypocholesterolemic action of green tea, especially (-) epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) for its effect on diet-induced hypercholesterolemia in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=15) were fed a green tea-free diet (control), $1.0\%$ green tea catechin (catechin) or $0.5\%$ green tea catechin EGCG for seven weeks. Hypercholesterolemia was induced by adding $1\%$ cholesterol and $0.5\%$ cholic acid to all diets. There was no difference in food intake and body weight gain among the groups. The green tea EGCG treatment led to a significant improvement in plasma levels of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol and high density lipoprotein (HDL)/LDL ratio (p<0.05). There was no significant effect on the plasma HDL-cholesterol level. The catechin treatment led to a 4.19-fold increase in the LDL-receptor mRNA level compared to the control, but the EGCG treatment did not affect the hepatic LDL-receptor mRNA level. Our results suggest that when blood cholesterol level is down-regulated by green tea EGCG, the LDL receptor gene-independent pathway may dominate the hypocholesterolemic action of EGCG.

  • Green tea and coffee consumption have been widely popular worldwide. These beverages contain caffeine to activate the central nervous system by adenosine receptor blockade, and due to the caffeine, addiction or tolerance may occur. In addition to this caffeine effect, green tea and coffee consumption have always been at the center of discussions about human health, disease, and longevity. In particular, green tea catechins are involved in many biological activities such as antioxidation and modulation of various cellular lipid and proteins. Thus, they are beneficial against degenerative diseases, including obesity, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and various inflammatory diseases. Some reports also suggest that daily consumption of tea catechins may help in controlling type 2 diabetes. However, other studies have reported that chronic consumption of green tea may result in hepatic failure, neuronal damage, and exacerbation of diabetes, suggesting that interindividual variations in the green tea effect are large. This review will focus on the effect of green tea catechins extracted from the Camellia sinensis plant on type 2 diabetes and obesity, and the possible mechanistic explanation for the experimental results mainly from our laboratory. It is hoped that green tea can be consumed in a suitable manner as a supplement to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes and obesity.

패션소매점포 매장 인테리어 색상의 친환경 점포 이미지에 미치는 영향 및 소비자 환경인식 조절 효과 연구 (A study of the effect of interior colors of fashion retail stores on green store image and moderation of environmental concern)

  • Consumer interest in eco-friendly fashion products has been consistent. While most relevant research emphasizes individual morals and environmental concern as the most crucial determinants to eco-friendly consumption behavior, more recent studies point out that in so doing there has been somewhat a neglectance on the importance of fundamental marketing strategies. More specifically, the crucial role of interior colors in fashion retail stores has been managerially considered something certain yet no empirical results have been found to support such a strong managerial assumption. For instance, colors such as green, blue, and brown are believed to represent natural images and are more appropriate to the eco-friendly marketing and the relevant research has been lacking. Therefore, this study attempts to explore the effect of in-store interior design colors (green versus non-green) on consumer perception of green store images. A total of 382 respondents were gathered for an online survey using differing store images as the stimulus and used for testing hypotheses. In the results, respondents exposed to store images using green interior colors reported a higher evaluation of green store image of the store. The effect is found to be significantly moderated by respondent's environmental concern: to explain, respondents of high environmental concern are less influenced by green color interiors when they evaluate the brand's eco-friendly image. In sum, the positive influence of green interior colors on green store image is found statistically significant, with its stronger effect for consumers of low concern. Managerial and academic discussions are provided.

Effect of Extraction Condition on the Content of EGCG and Caffeine of Green Tea: Comparison with the Inhibitory Activity on Pancreatic Lipase

  • Caffeine and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) are major constituents of green tea, the leaves of Camellia sinensis (Theaceae). Although EGCG is well known for diverse beneficial effect, caffeine is sometimes harmful with adverse effects. Therefore, the extraction efficiency was investigated using different extraction method such as extraction solvent, extraction time, extraction method, and repeated extraction. The content of EGCG and caffeine in green tea extract was quantitated by HPLC analysis. The extraction condition exerted difference on the extraction yield. The content of EGCG was also affected by different extraction condition. Especially, the extraction solvent greatly affected the content of EGCG in the extract. However, the content of caffeine was less affected compared to that of EGCG. The inhibitory effect of green tea extract on pancreatic lipase was almost similar regardless of extraction condition. Taken together, optimization of extraction condition will provide best efficacy for further development of green tea as anti-obesity therapeutics.

도시주부의 가치성향에 따른 녹색소비 행동에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Urban Housewives따 Green-Consumption Behavior towards their value-Orientation)

  • The purpose of this study were (1)to investigate the housewives’value orientation toward environmental effect, (2)to examine the effect of environments and value-orientation on housewives’green-consumption behavior and (3)to analyze the hypothesized causal direct or indirect explanation effect among the housewives’green-consumption behavior. The 310 subjects of this study were selected from housewives lived in Seoul. The data obtained were analyzed by Mean, Pearson’s correlation, and Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis. The major results were as follows: 1) The mean score of housewives’value-orientation was 4.45 out of 5. The value-orientation of housewives was affected by the following variables in order to: environmental pollution and participation I community organization. 2) The mean score of housewives’green-consumption behavior was 3.62 out of 5. The housewives’green-consumption behavior was affected by the following variables in order : value orientation, environmental knowledge, participation in community organization, mass media and recycling system. 3) The most influential variables on the housewives’ green-consumption behavior were in the rank of the value orientation(R²=.39). mass meia(R²=.11). and environmental knowledge(R²=.07).

The Synergistic Effect of Organophosphorus and Dithiocarbamate Ligands on Metal Extraction in Supercritical CO2

  • The bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid (Cyanex-272) and sodium diethyl- dithiocarbamate (NaDDC) ligands were used to extract of metal ions ($Cd^{2+},\;Co^{2+},\;Cu^{2+},\;Pb^{2+},\;Zn^{2+}$) in supercritical $CO_2$. Experiments showed a strong synergistic effect and better extraction efficiency if the two ligands were used together. In-situ UV-visible observation indicates that NaDDC in the water/supercritical $CO_2$ started to decompose slowly. The synergistic effect seems to come from the deprotonation of the organophosphorus ligand by amines from the decomposed NaDDC. The enhancing role of amines was confirmed using the mixture of Cyanex-272 and diethylamine(DEA) in the metal extraction.

  • Recently, concerns about conserving proper size of urban green spaces and accessibility are increasing, regarding it as a solution to diverse urban environmental problems including pollution, ecosystem deterioration, urban climate change. Artificial ground greening such as green roofs is regarded as the only alternative that can conserve green spaces which are impossible to be secured on the ground. However, green roofs are not popularized yet and levels are very low in provincial cities despite of related technology development and support systems of related agencies. Based on the background, this study tries to present a theoretical basis of methods for green roofs, conducting green roof simulations and collecting ideas about problems and improving measures from green roof users. Finally, it aims to offer base data which help establish policy direction for activation of green roof technology. As a result of a simulation for verifying temperature reduction effect, it was possible to affirm effect of a plot that green roofs applied. Especially, it was revealed that a green roof method using ground covers such as mixed planting was the most effective way to reduce temperature. Activation methods for green roofs based on this study are as follows: First, it is a priority to readjust systems related to green roofs. Second, citizens' active and voluntary participation must be attained. Third, it is required to establish detailed promotion procedures which aim at actual conduct and to maintain an expert department which is able to manage and control the establishment. After conduct, continuous aftercare stages are also needed.

도시노인의 녹지환경 만족도가 삶의 만족도에 미치는 영향과 주관적 건강상태의 매개효과 (Effects of Satisfaction with Green Space on Life Satisfaction and Mediating Effect of Subjective Health Status of the Urban Elderly)

  • 본 연구는 녹지에 대한 만족도가 도시 노인의 삶의 만족도에 미치는 영향을 분석하고 녹지환경 만족도와 삶의 만족도의 관계에서 주관적 건강상태가 매개효과를 가지는지 분석하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 연구의 목적을 위해 통계청에서 실시한 2018년 사회조사에 참여한 65세 이상 노인을 분석하였다. 총 4,567명의 노인을 분석대상으로 다중회귀분석을 실시하였으며, 부트스트래핑(bootstrapping) 방법을 통해 매개효과의 유의미성을 확인하였다. 분석결과 녹지에 대한 만족도는 노인의 삶의 만족도에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 녹지에 대한 만족도가 높을수록 삶의 만족도가 높아지는 것으로 나타나 삶의 만족도에 대한 녹지환경 만족도의 직접 효과가 확인되었다. 또한 녹지환경 만족도는 주관적 건강상태에 유의한 영향을 미쳐 녹지환경 만족도가 높을수록 주관적 건강상태를 긍정적으로 인식하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 매개효과에 있어서는 주관적 건강상태가 도시노인의 녹지환경 만족도와 삶의 만족도의 관계에서 부분매개 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과는 녹지환경이 도시노인의 건강과 삶의 만족도를 높일 수 있는 개입수단으로 활용될 수 있음을 보여준다.

환경적인 특성을 고려한 지각 요인들이 그린IT 제품 구매의도에 미치는 영향 (An Effect on the Purchase Intention of the Green IT Products by Perceived Factors Considering Environmental Characteristics)

  • The government and enterprises have interest in the green IT products, therefore this study focus on the green IT products. First, we study the effects on the purchase intention of the green IT products by perceived value, perceived quality, and perceived trust. Second, we consider the environmental characteristics such as environmental concern, green recognition, and environmental knowledge. Third, we study the moderating effects of environmental characteristics. The proposed model was empirically tested using data collected from users having the purchase intention of the Green IT products. The major results of this study are as follows. First, perceived value and perceived trust had a positive effect on purchase intention of the green IT products. Second, environmental concern, green recognition, and environmental knowledge had moderating effects between perceived value and purchase intention of the green IT products. Third, environmental concern and green recognition had moderating effects between perceived trust and purchase intention of the green IT products. This study can provide many implications for government and businesses considering green IT products.
