This study was conducted to attain an in-depth understanding of students' mathematical representations and to present the educational implications for teaching them. Twelve mathematical tasks were developed according to the six types of problems. A task performance was executed to 151 third graders from four classes in DaeJeon and GyeongGi. We analyzed the types and forms of representations generated by them. Then, qualitative case studies were conducted on two small-groups of five from two classes in GyeongGi. We analyzed how individuals' representations became elaborated into group representation and what patterns emerged during the collaborative small-group learning. From the results, most students used more than one representation in solving a problem, but they were not fluent enough to link them to successful problem solving or to transfer correctly among them. Students refined their representations into more meaningful group representation through peer interaction, self-reflection, etc.. Teachers need to give students opportunities to think through, and choose from, various representations in problem solving. We also need the in-depth understanding and great insights into students' representations for teaching.

A shock wave, being an irreversible process, gives rise to entropy increase. A great deal of effort has been made to control shock wave and boundary layer interaction related to energy losses as well as problems of vibration and noise. In the present study, tests are performed on a roof mounted half circular arc in an indraft type supersonic wind tunnel to evaluate the effects of porosity, length and depth of cavity in passive control of shock wave on the attenuation of shock strength by reviewing the measured static pressures at the porous wall and cavity. Also the flow field is visualized by a Schlieren system. The results show that in the present study the porosity of 8% produced the largest reduction of pressure fluctuations and that for the same porosity, the strength of shock wave decreases with the increasings of the depth and length of cavity.
Chloride penetration is considered as a most crucial factor for the determination of the service life of concrete. A lot of experimental tools for the chloride penetration into concrete have been developed, however, the mechanism was based on only diffusion, although permeability is also main driving forces for the chloride penetration. Permeation reacts on submerged concrete impacting for short to long term durability while capillary suction occurs on only dried concrete for very early time. Furthermore, hydrostatic pressure increases in proportional to measured depth from the surface of water because of the increasing weight of water exerting downward force from above. It is thought, therefore, that the water pressure has a great influence on the chloride penetration and thereby on the service life of marine concrete. In this study, new experiment is designed to examine the effect of water pressure on chloride penetration in concrete quantitatively. As an experiment result, pressure leaded a quick chlorides penetration by a certain depth, while diffusion induced chlorides to penetrate inward slowly. Therefore, it was concluded that chloride should penetrates significantly by water pressure and the phenomena should be accelerated for concrete exposed to deep sea. The research is expected as a framework to define the service life of submerged concrete with water pressure and compute water permeability coefficient of cementitious materials.

This paper shows the optimum design of the fluid engine mount. The design has been modified by trial and error because there is many design parameters that can be varied in order to obtain resonant and notch frequencies, and notch depth. It seems to be a great application for optimal design for the mount. Many combinations of parameters are possible to give us the desired resonant and notch frequencies, but the question is which combination provides the lowest resonant peak and notch depth\ulcorner In this study, the enhanced artificial life algorithm is applied to get the desired notch frequency of a fluid mount and minimize transmissibility at the notch frequency. The present hybrid algorithm is the synthesis of an artificial life algorithm with the random tabu (R-tabu) search method. The hybrid algorithm has some advantages, which is not only faster than the conventional artificial life algorithm, but also gives a more accurate solution. In addition, this algorithm can find all global optimum solutions. The results show that the performance of a conventional engine mount can be improved significantly compared with the optimized mount.
Chloride-induced cover cracking will aggravate the performance deterioration for RC structures under the chlorideladen environment, which may endanger the safety of structures and occupants. Traditional design method cannot ensure that a definite performance is satisfied. To overcome the defects, a study on the performance-based design method was carried out in this paper. Firstly, the limit state functions were established for the corrosion initiation and cover cracking. Thereafter, the uncertainty analysis was performed to study the effects of random factors on the time-dependent performances. Partial factor formulae were deduced through the first-order reliability method for performance verification. Finally, an illustrative example was presented and the sensitivity of cover depth to other parameters was carried out. It is found that the uncertainties of the random variables have great effects on the required cover depth. It is demonstrated that the performance-based design method can ensure that the target performance can be satisfied and support to formulate a rational maintenance and repair strategy for RC structures under the chloride environment.
Offshore pipelines play an important role in the transportation of gas, oil, water and oil products. It is common to have a group of pipelines in the oil and gas field. To reduce the installation cost and time, dual pipelines are designed. There are great advantages in the installation of dual pipelines over two separate single lines. It can greatly reduce the cost for trench, back-filling and installation. However the installation of dual pipelines often requires technical challenges. Pipelines should be placed to be stable against external loadings during installation and design life period. Dual pipelines in trench can reduce the influence of external forces. To investigate the flow patterns and forces as trench depth and slope changes, number of experiments are conducted with PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) equipment in a Circulating Water Channel. Numerical approaches to simulate experimental conditions are also made to compare with experimental results. The velocity fields around dual pipelines in trench are investigated and analysed. Comparison of both results show similar patterns of flow around pipelines. It is proved that the trench depth contributes significantly on hydrodynamic stability. The trench slope also affects the pipeline stability. The results can be applied in the stability design of dual pipelines in trench section. The complex flow patterns can be effectively linked in the understanding of fluid motions around multi-circular bodies in trench.

Ultra-short laser pulses are effective, when high requirements concerning accuracy, surface roughness and heat affected zone are demanded for surface structuring. In particular, picosecond laser systems that are suited to be operated in industrial environments are of great interest for many practical applications. This paper focused on inducing optimum process parameters for higher volume ablation rate by analyzing a relationship between crater diameter and optical spot size. In detail, the dependency of the volume ablation rate, penetration depth and threshold fluence on the pulse duration 8 ps and wavelength of 515 nm was discussed. The experimental results showed that wavelength of 515 nm resulted in less threshold fluence ($0.075J/cm^2$) on copper than IR wavelength ($0.3J/cm^2$). As a result, it was possible that optimum fluence for higher volume ablation rate was achieved with $0.28J/cm^2$.
Relationship of soil properties and seasonal variation on microbilogical population to-continuous culture and first-time culture of ginseng was investigated by bimonthly from May 1976 to January 1977. pH and P contents of 2 years continuous culture of soil were higher than other culture plot of soil, and contraty to the above, 2 years first-time culture of ginseng soil was conplot of soil, and contraty to the above, 2 years first-time culture of ginseng soil was contained more potassium contents than other culture plot of soil. In microbiological fluctuation with seasonr in various soil conditions, the population, trends of Fusarium spp., Erwiniaspp., and flourescent Psedudomonas spp. were increased in May and July in general, but decreased in the other month. It was observed that in all type of soil, Fusarium spp. was distributed in abundance in and on rihizosphere, and decreased the propagules numbers as soil depth increase. The numbers of Erwinia spp. and fluorescent Pseudo-monas spp. were distributed greater in numbers on the surface zone of soil depth decreasing the numbers along the soil layer increase, and also in 2years continuous culture of soil especially, a great numbers of Erwinia spp. and fluorescent Pseudomonas were evenly distributed in surface zone and rhizosphere. Ginseng disease with a high incidence of bacterial disease in continuous culture of 2 and 4 years was seemed to be associated with soil bacteria that was high in numbers of Erwinia spp. and fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. in May and July.

When designing fluid mounts, design parameters can be varied in order to obtain a desired notch frequency and notch depth. The notch frequency is a function of the mount parameters and is typically selected by the designer to occur at the vibration disturbance frequency. Since the process of choosing these parameters can involve some trial and error, it seems to be a great application for obtaining optimal performance of the mount. Many combinations of parameters are possible to give us the desired notch frequency, but the question is which combination provides the lowest depth. Therefore. an automatic optimal technique is needed to optimize the performance of the fluid mount. In this study. the enhanced genetic algorithm (EGA) is applied to minimizing transmissibility of a fluid mount at the desired notch frequency, and at the notch and resonant frequencies. The EGA is modified genetic algorithm to search global and local optimal solutions of multi-modal function optimization. Furthermore. to reduce the searching time as compare to conventional genetic algorithm and Increase the precision of the solutions, the modified simplex method is combined with the algorithm. The results show that the performance of the optimized mount by using the hybrid algorithm is better than that of the conventional fluid mount.
Generally, in case of constructing the embankments on the soft clay layers, one-dimensional consolidation settlement under the assumption of a middle position stress in a single layer makes a great difference with the integral value, ie. the final settlement. Consequently, to find how many equal segments of the soft clay layer are needed to converge into the integral value and which position should be taken as a position of mean stress, authors compared the theoretical value of the settlement due to one-dimensional consolidation with the practical value of the settlement due to two dimensional consolidation. The obtained results are as follows. 1) The practical value of the two-dimensional consolidation settlement can be estimated by the 74-83% theoretical value of the one-dimensional consolidation settlement. 2) When the soft clay layer was cut into 8-16 equal segments according to the depth, one-dimensional consolidation settlement converge into the integral value. 3) Assuming a total soft clay layer as a single one, the depth of a mean stress position is 0.29-0.37 of the thickness of the total soft clay layer. 4) The Hyperbola Method which presumes the long-term settlement from the short-term practical value of settlement is credible, because all practical value of the settlement are in safe side of the standard error of estimation and the correlation coefficient is up to 0.95.
