  • Non-gray radiation with convection in the entrance region of a smooth tube is numerically investigated. The fluid is a mixture of carbon dioxide, water vapor, and nitrogen to simulate combustion products of propane. The flow is assumed to be laminar and hydrodynamically and thermally developing. The P-1 approximation is used to simplify the radiative transfer equation and the exponential wide band model is adapted to model the spectral absorption coefficients of non-gray gas mixture. The bulk mean temperature and Nusselt number variation along the tube axis are shown for several inlet and wall temperature pairs to show the effect of temperature on the heat transfer characteristics. Nusselt numbers for simultaneously developing flow are compared to those for thermally developing flow. In addition, the effect of the mole fraction of the non-gray gases on convective and radiative Nusselt numbers is investigated.

  • According to living environment, the number of deaths due to thyroid diseases increased. In this paper, we proposed an algorithm for recognizing a thyroid detection using texture analysis based on shape, gray level co-occurrence matrix and gray level run length matrix. First of all, we segmented the region of interest (ROI) using active contour model algorithm. Then, we applied a total of 18 features (5 first order descriptors, 10 Gray level co-occurrence matrix features(GLCM), 2 Gray level run length matrix features and shape feature) to each thyroid region of interest. The extracted features are used as statistical analysis. Our results show that first order statistics (Skewness, Entropy, Energy, Smoothness), GLCM (Correlation, Contrast, Energy, Entropy, Difference variance, Difference Entropy, Homogeneity, Maximum Probability, Sum average, Sum entropy), GLRLM features and shape feature helped to distinguish thyroid benign and malignant. This algorithm will be helpful to diagnose of thyroid nodule on ultrasound images.

  • Digital halftoning is a technique to make an equivalent binary image from scanned photo or graphic images. Low pass filtering characteristic of human visual system can be applied to get the effect of spatial averaging of local area consisted of black and white pixels for gray image. The overlapping of black dot decreases brightness and black dot is very sensitive to human visual system in the bright region. In this paper, for gray-level expression, only bright gray region in the color image is considered for blue noise mask (BNM) approach. To solve this problem, BNM with CMY dot is used for the bright region instead of black dot. Dot-on-dot model with single mask causes the problem making much black dot overlap, color distortion. Therefore approach with three masks for C, M and Y each is proposed to decrease pixel overlap and color distortion.

  • Tongue diagnosis is one of the most important diagnostic methods in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Tongue image segmentation aims to extract the image object (i.e., tongue body), which plays a key role in the process of manufacturing an automated tongue diagnosis system. It is still challenging, because there exists the personal diversity in tongue appearances such as size, shape, and color. This paper proposes an innovative segmentation method that uses image thresholding, gray projection and active contour model (ACM). Specifically, an initial object region is first extracted by performing image thresholding in HSI (i.e., Hue Saturation Intensity) color space, and subsequent morphological operations. Then, a gray projection technique is used to determine the upper bound of the tongue body root for refining the initial object region. Finally, the contour of the refined object region is smoothed by ACM. Experimental results on a dataset composed of 100 color tongue images showed that the proposed method obtained more accurate segmentation results than other available state-of-the-art methods.

  • In this paper, an eye tracking method is presented by using on iterated spatial moment adapting weighted gray level that can accurately detect and track user's eyes under the complicated background. The region of face is detected by using Haar-like feature before extracting region of eyes to minimize an region of interest from the input picture of CCD camera. And the region of eyes is detected by using eigeneye based on the eigenface of Principal component analysis. Also, feature points of eyes are detected from darkest part in the region of eyes. The tracking of eyes is achieved correctly by using iterated spatial moment adapting weighted gray level.

  • U.S. nuclear power plant decommissioning guidelines(MARSSIM and MARLAP) are recommends to use DQOs when planning and conducting site surveys. The DQOs which is constructed in the site survey planning stage provide a way to make the best use of data. It helps we can get the important information and data to make decisions as well. From fifth to seventh steps of DQOs are the process of designing a site survey by using the collected data and information in the previous step to make reasonable and reliable decisions. The gray region that is set up during this process is defined as the range of concentrations where the consequences of type II decision errors are relatively small. The gray region can be set using DCGL and the average concentration of radionuclide in the sample collected at the survey unit. By setting up the gray region, site survey plan can be made most resource-efficient and the consequences on decision errors can be minimized. In this study, we set up the gray region by using the DCGL of Kori-1 which was derived from the previous research. In addition, we proposed a method to assess the concentration of radionuclide in samples for making decisions correctly.

  • The midbrain periaqueductal gray is a midline structure that encircles the mesencephalic aqueduct of midbrain and plays an important role in anaglgesia and modulation of nociceptive input to the central nervous system. It has been demonstrated that the periaqueductal gray contains several neuropeptides including neurotensin, which has been postulated antinociceptive effect to the periaqueductal gray. The present study was performed to provide immunohistochemical localization of neurotensin of midbrain periaqueductal gray in the Korean native goat by using immunohistochemical method. Neurotensin-like immunireactive neurons were localized throughout the midbrain periaqueductal gray, although more immunoreactive neurons were present in the middle and caudal parts of periaquductal gray than the rostral part. Dense neurotensin-like immunoreactive neurons were much more numerous in the ventral lateral division of the mid- and caudal periaqueductal grays. Neurotensin-like immunoreactive neurons were much larger and more prominent near the external margin of the gray than in the juxta-aqueductal region. Neurotensin-like immunoreactive fibers were observed as short processes extending from immunoreactive cells and some small immunoreactive puncta and varicose-like fibers were also seen.

  • This study is to segment white matter, gray matter, and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) on a brain MR image and to calculate the volume of each. First, after removing the background on a brain MR image, we segmented the whole region of a brain from a skull and a fat layer. Then, we calculated the partial volume of each component, which was present in scanning finite thickness, with the arithmetical analysis of gray value from the internal region of a brain showing the blurring effects on the basis of the MR image forming principle. Calculated partial volumes of white matter, gray matter and CSF were used to determine the threshold for the segmentation of each component on a brain MR image showing the blurring effects. Finally, the volumes of segmented white matter, gray matter, and CSF were calculated. The result of this study can be used as the objective diagnostic method to determine the degree of brain atrophy of patients who have neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and cerebral palsy.
