The motion of small heavy particles in homogeneous isotropic turbulence in the present of gravity is investigated using Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) at moderate Reynolds number. The Lagrangian velocity and acceleration statistics of particles and of flow for a wide range of Stokes number, defined as the ratio of the particle response time to Kolmogorov time scale of turbulence, were obtained for the direction of the gravity and normal direction, respectively. It is found that particles lose their correction faster than the case without gravity. Then, a significant increase in the average settling velocity was observed for a certain range of Stokes number. Our focus is placed on gravitational effect on very small particles. Our simulations show that as the Stokes number reduces to zero, their mean settling velocity approaches the terminal velocity in still fluid.

This paper demonstrates settling and further consolidation behaviour of dredged clayey soils during landfilling. The effects of initial moisture content, electrolyte type and concentration on settling and consolidation behaviour were examined and evaluated by laboratory column tests. Electrokinetic tests were carried out with modified settling column to compare the soil behaviour under the gravity. From the testing results, the settling velocity increased due to the effects of cations in the electrolyte solution, and electrically induced settlements were found to be greater than those under the gravity.

The disposal of stormwater is one of the major problems in urban water management. One method of reducing peak runoff rates and other detrimental impacts of stormwater is detention storage. Detention ponds as a water quality control alternatives have been investigated by a number of researchers. Recognizing multiple roles such as flood peak attenuation, pollution removal and aesthetic enhancement, the design and management of detentions ponds deserve more research. The purpose of this research is to establish design criteria wet detention ponds to improve water quality. Water quality in detention pond discharge might be improve with physical, chemical and biological alterations. Physical alteration was focused in this study. There are several methods for estimating the suspended solid control capability of wet detention ponds. Existing models of suspended solids removal are based on sedimentation and gravity settling theory. The pollutant trap efficiency of pond is a function of several interrelating factors. Detention time is the most important factor, because it determine gravity settling quantities of pollutants. Desirable modification of physical factors for improvement of water quality in wet detention ponds are volume ratio, area ratio, length to width ratio, depth, out let location, bottom soil type. In order to apply design procedure in actual site, Namak new town development area was selected.
The submerged barrier, employed in a reactor, divided a reactor into sludge settling zone and mixing zone according to flow type. In spite of mixing in the mixing zone, the lower part of sludge settling zone than the top of barrier was in a steady flow due to the barrier, which prevented the turbulent flow, produced from the mixing zone, from being diffused into the sludge settling zone. Therefore, the sludges in the mixing zone flowed backward over the barrier into the upper part of the sludge settling zone by turbulent flow and settled down in the sludge settling zone by the force of gravity. When barrier/water level ratio was 0.5, most sludges almost did not settle down in tile sludge settling zone because the sludges were directly affected by the turbulent flow, generated from mixer in the mixing zone. At 0.63 of barrier/water level ratio, sludge in the middle part of sludge settling zone rocked from side to side weakly. And sludge in the lower part became piled up on the bottom over this ratio. After 10minutes of sludge settling, the lower part of sludge settling zone was over 5000mg/L of sludge concentration although intial sludge concentration was 2300mg/L. By using the submerged barrier and the flow types, it could transfer sludge from this to that.
A series of settling tests and physico-chemical property tests on Saemankeum fine-cohesive sediments has been conducted in order to investigate the correlation between settling properties and their physico-chemical properties which are represented as grain size distribution, mineralogical composition, and percentage of organic contents. Experimental results of physico-chemical property tests show that Saemankeum sediments are relatively large in average grain size(52${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$), and contain very small organic materials(2%), and are dominantly composed of Quarts in mineralogical aspect which has relatively low cohesion. Thus, Saemankeum sediments might be specified as the sediments whose settling properties are more influenced by the gravity than the cohesion. This characteristics of Saemankeum sediments are found to lead to relatively small settling velocity in flocculated settling region in which increasing cohesion results in increasing settling velocity, while relatively large settling velocity in hindered settling region in which settling velocity decreases with increasing cohesion.

The sediment of Shihwa Lake contains an abundant quantity of cohesive sediments. The transport processes of the cohesive sediments are complex and difficult to predict, quantitatively. The cohesive sediments are the primary reason for the pollution of the environment and water quality in the coastal region. In this study, a column test has been performed. In order to quantify the settling velocities of sediment from Shihwa Lake, an experiment was conducted using a specially designed 1.8m tall settling column. A series of settling tests and physico-chemical property tests on Shihwa Lake cohesive sediments has been conducted to investigate the correlation between settling properties and their physico-chemical properties, which are represented as grain size distribution, mineralogical composition, and percentage oj organic contents. Experimental results of physico-chemical property tests show that Shihwa Lake sediments are relatively large in average grain $size(74\mu m)$ contain very small organic $material(6\%)$, and are dominantly composed of Quarts, which has relatively low cohesion. Thus, Shihwa Lake sediments might be specified as those whose settling properties are more influenced by gravity than cohesion. It is concluded that the magnitude of settling velocities of muddy sediments can be quite different, regionally, and it implies that field or laboratory experiments for settling velocity measurement should be preceded over the numerical modeling of muddy sediment transport, in order to obtain the reliable prediction results for a given specific site.
The diffusion characteristics of an ocean dumping material in the south-eastern East/Japan Sea related to regulate the physical characteristics with the observation and the hydraulic experiment are investigated. The main results are as follows; (1) Spying CTD observation result of the area of Jung in the East/Japan Sea, the ocean dumping area had influenced the Tsushima Warm Current of high temperature and salinity. Horizontal turbulent diffusivity is 1.913$\times$10$^{7}$ by drogue tracking. (2) From the experiment of settling, the initial settling velocity of each material is 1.0~2.7 cm/sec according to the specific gravity and initial concentration. In the pycnocline, particles didn't settle under the pycnocline any more and accumulated. It is signified that calculation of the sedimentation rate of the ocean dumping material including of vertical diffusion must be regard the pynocline in the ocean area have well-developed pycnocline. (3) Vertical turbulent diffusivity were 2.219$\times$10$^{-8}$ ~8.874$\times$10$^{-4}$ cm$^2$/sec from the experiment of settling. And, the pycnocline influenced the vertical turbulent diffusivity.
Over the past decades, a flocculation and/or sedimentation process have been adopted to remove pollutants from CSOs. It has been learned that major factors affecting settlement of pollutants are the particle size distribution, their settling velocities and their specific gravity. It is, therefore, a good idea to analyze the particle size distribution and settleability of CSOs pollutants in order to develop details in designing a process. Discussed in this study are pollutant characteristics of CSOs such as particle size distribution and settleability of pollutants. The power law function is applied and is found to be an effective and reliable index for expressing the particle size distribution of pollutants in CSOs. Based on the regression analysis it is observed that the derived constants of curves representing settling velocity profile are proportional to the initial concentration of particles and to the ${\beta}$-values of power law distributions.
Operation characteristics of the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process with electro-flotation (EF) as a solid liquid separation method (EF-SBR) were investigated. EF-SBR process showed excellent solid-liquid separation performance which enabled to separate biosolids from liquid phase within 30 min and to extend cyclic reaction time. Although influent organic loading rate was increased stepwise from 5 to 15 g COD/day, food to microorganisms (F/M) ratio could be maintained about 0.3 g COD/g VSS/day in EF-SBR because biomass concentration could be easily controlled at desired level by EF. However, it was impossible to increase biomass concentration at the same level in control SBR (C-SBR) process because solid-liquid separation by gravity settling showed a limitation at higher mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration with 60 min of settling time. Total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) removal efficiency of EF-SBR process was not decreased although influent organic loading rate became 3 times higher than initial value. However, it was seriously deteriorated in C-SBR process after increasing the rate over 10 g COD/day, which was accounted for insufficient organic removal by relatively higher food to microorganisms (F/M) ratio as well as biosolids wash-out by a limitation of gravity sedimentation.
Particle suspension is frequently observed in many natural flows such as in the atmosphere and the ocean as well as in various engineering flows. Recently, airborne micro or nano-scale particles in atmosphere attract much attention from environmental society since small particle cause serious environmental problems in the industrialized areas. Also, the characteristics of such heavy particles' behavior is quite different from its fluid particles because the inertia force and buoyance force acting on the heavy particles are different than those acting on fluid particles. Therefore, our studies is to investigate the characteristics of the behavior of heavy particles considering the inertia effect with or without gravity effect, but do not consider modification of turbulence by the particles, that is one-way interaction. We carried out direct numerical simulation of isotropic turbulence with particles under the Stokes drag assumption for a spherical particle. These results can be used in the development of a stochastic model for predicting particle's behavior.
