  • Gabriel Naud$\acute{e}$ is a great thinker and academic librarian in France who realized the spirit of universal public library in 17C. Based on the experiences of private librarian for 12 years in Italy and public librarian for 20 years in France, he concretized his thought for public library in 'la Biblioth$\grave{e}$que Mazarine', which is the essence of the spirit of public library in France. He also realized the importance of librarians as specialists, for the first time, who played important roles in the development of the library community as one of the great thinkers of public library. The purpose of this research is to study 'la Biblioth$\grave{e}$que Mazarine' where the spirit of public library had been prospered through the entire life of Gabriel Naud$\acute{e}$.

  • In western, aromatherapy uses essential oils to prevent and treat disease, and is one of the ways to stay healthy. In oriental medicine, there was also a similar medical treatment using aromatic herbs for a long ago. The exisiting research of oriental medical herbs is mainly focused on the theory of qi and flavor(氣味論). But on aromatherapy used with aromatic herbs, it is necessary to study the aromatic herbs by aroma. So "xi$\bar{a}$ng p$\check{u}$, 香譜" and "b$\check{e}$n c$\check{a}$o g$\bar{a}$ng m$\grave{u}$, 本草綱目" mainly contain the study about clinical effects of aromatic herbs. And "b$\check{e}$n c$\check{a}$o p$\check{i}$n hu$\grave{i}$ j$\bar{i}$ng y$\grave{a}$o, 本草品彙精要"mainly explains the effects of medical herbs with five aroma classification of x$\bar{i}$ng(腥), sh$\bar{a}$n(膻), xi$\bar{a}$ng(香), ch$\grave{o}$u(臭), xi$\check{u}$(朽). The former one makes more clinical uses of medical herbs, and the latter one grows up the theory of medical herbs. This study is expected to have a good influence on aromatherapy and classification of oriental medical herbs.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the bionomics of Ostrinia furnacalis $(Gu\grave{e}n\grave{e}e)$ in the laboratory and field in 1978. The oriental corn borer had three generations a year in Korea ana the first period of moth activity was mostly from early June to early July, the second from mid July to mid August and the third from mid August to early September. It overwintered with larval stage in the corn stubbles. The egg period was 3-4 days. The larva molted 5-6 times and its period was 18-30 days. The longevity of adult was 7-11 days and deposited about 600-800 eggs. An egg parasite and two larval parasites were investigated.

  • The aim of this article is to outline the history and importance of the Korean rare books in Coll$\grave{e}$ge de France. With this purpose in mind, the historical background and the process of how these books came to Coll$\grave{e}$ge de France were studied through cataloguing the list, and then analyzing them by subject, printing type, and timeline. We examined the relationship between the private collections of Maurice Courant(1865-1935) and the Korean rare books held in Coll$\grave{e}$ge de France. The Bibliographie Cor$\acute{e}$enne written by Maurice Courant is the most important reference book for studying the publication of the late Joseon dynasty and finding the whereabouts of the Korean books in France. Also, we tried to figure out the best way to implement and make use of a bibliographic database, and contribute to the exploration and study of Korean Cultural Heritage scattered outside Korea.

  • Monte Carlo ray tracing has been widely used for simulating a diverse set of photo-realistic effects. However, this technique typically produces noise when insufficient numbers of samples are used. As the number of samples allocated per pixel is increased, the rendered images converge. However, this approach of generating sufficient numbers of samples, requires prohibitive rendering time. To solve this problem, image filtering can be applied to rendered images, by filtering the noisy image rendered using low sample counts and acquiring smoothed images, instead of naively generating additional rays. In this paper, we proposed a Stein's Unbiased Risk Estimator (SURE) based $\grave{A}$-Trous wavelet to filter the noise in rendered images in a near-interactive rate. Based on SURE, we can estimate filtering errors associated with $\grave{A}$-Trous wavelet, and identify wavelet coefficients reducing filtering errors. Our approach showed improvement, up to 6:1, over the original $\grave{A}$-Trous filter on various regions in the image, while maintaining a minor computational overhead. We have integrated our propsed filtering method with the recent interactive ray tracing system, Embree, and demonstrated its benefits.

  • Hyeunryungwon is a tomb for Crown Prince Sado, who was the father of King Jeongjo, the twenty second king of Joseon dynasty. The tomb had been originally in the Eastern part of Seoul, but was relocated in 1789 to the downtown Suwon, which was renowned as a good tomb site among the Royal family at that time. King Jeongjo looked through the records from the previous generations for the ideal location and direction for the tomb. He personally studied Feng Shui theory and designated its location and direction. He ordered for lavish decorations for the stone adornments of the surroundings of the grave mound, which was against the regulations of the royal family. He found his reasons in the precedent that allowed sumptuous decoration. However, for the arrangements of Jeongjagahk(T shaped building) and other attached facilities, he made unusual choice that other precedent royal tombs did not have. Instead of following the conventions that Jeongjagak should be facing south of a grave mound, he put it on the right side of grave mound. Also conventionally, Subokbang(a place where guards can stay) and Suragan(a kitchen that prepares food for sacrificial rites) should be facing symmetrically, but they too, were on the same side with Jeongjagak. It was a measurement that the grave mound of Hyeunryungwon can have a full view without being obstructed by other facilities and it was also personally ordered by King Jeongjo. The distinguishing features of Hyeunryuwon was motivated by King Jeongjo's filial affection, and his academic pursuit of precedent royal tombs initiated the unconventional and innovative challenges.

  • This study investigates the funeral rituals practiced by the Joseon Dynasty as recorded about Lee Mun Geon (1494~1567, a.k.a Mukjae), who mourned by the grave of his deceased mother, Ms. Shin (1463~1535), a woman whose family's origin was Goryeon. The study focuse on the rituals performed by Lee after his mother's death, his participation in the funeral, and his mourning specifically as an individual who has lost his parent. Reviewing Lee's mourning life beside the grave, the contents of diary belonging to a nobleman in the middle of Joseon Dynasty were studied aimsing to find out the meaning of rituals, the overall recognition accorded to death, and the filial duties that were carried out by the noblemen of the time. Although noblemen in the middle of Joseon Dynasty ceaselessly attempted to change the observance of funeral rituals through legislation, it was difficult to change the mindset of the people, who fllowed the deep-rooted traditions of long history. It must be acknowledged that the Joseon Dynasty had a different cultural background than that of China. There was a fundamental problem when they tried to adapt The Family Rituals of Zhu Xi, followed by the Chinese, to the Joseon society. Although The Family Rituals of Zhu Xi emphasized ancestral rites focusing on enshrining mortuary tablets and the importance of establishing the family shrine hundred times, noblemen in the mid-Joseon Dynasty period cared for their parents in the grave by mourning for them than by following such practice. The solemn memorial service held in front of the grave, and the annual ritual service on the death anniversary were far more important to the noblemen in the mid-Joseon Dynasty. Amid such contradictions, the noblemen accepted and performed the mourning rituals beside the grave of their parent. Human beings across the ages have always dwelt upon thoughts of the afterlife. Most people believe that they attain a state after the death of their physicalbody. If humans did not have such thoughts, they would not be bothered if death occurs on being hit by a car on the street. Thus, human beings often think of the ritual services related to death, although in different forms. Therefore, mourning by the grave of their parent held great significance among the noblemen of the Joseon Dynasty as a sign of their filial piety.
