Graphical Estimation of the Parameters of the Stable Laws

  • This paper presents an easily used graphical procedure for simultaneous estimation of the index, skewness, scale, and location parameters of the stable laws. First, the index $\alpha$ and skewness $\beta$ are estimated through the joint use of a tail length statistic $\widetilde{K_t}$ and a skewness statistic $\widetilde{K_s}$, both of which are functions of order statistics. Next, the function of order statistics needed for estimation of scale $\sigma$ and location $\mu$ are determined from a nomogram indexed on the estimates of $\alpha$ and $\beta$. Some applications and examples are provided.

  • Many researcher uses simulation techniques for understanding the phenomenon and expecting the response. Simulation techniques have many advantages which is less time-consuming, easy to control constraints, and cheaper than experimental study. However Researches usually are not good at programming the model, it's hard to implement simulation model using computer language. They use spreadsheet program like Microsoft $excel^{TM}$ Although a spreadsheet program is good for modeling, it's cumbersome to describe expressions which consist of not variable name but location indicator. This study suggests the program which helps researcher developing model using graphical interface and variable name. For verifying usability, the model which is implemented by developed modeler were compared with by spreadsheet program.

  • This study describes the strategy for advanced decision support system (ADSS) development for integrated management of water resources and quality in reservoir systems. The developed ADSS consists of database that contain hydrologic data, observed operational data, and data to support specific reservoir operations simulation, optimization models, and water quality models. The optimization model, mass balance simulation model and water quality models are used in a general prototype ADSS, menu driven controlling framework that assists the user to specify and evaluate the alternative operational scenarios at one time. These alternative scenarios are evaluated by the models and the results are compared through the use of a graphical based display system. This graphical based system uses an icon based schematic representation of the system to organize the presentation of the results. The ADSS includes the ability to use monthly or weekly time periods of analysis for the models and it can use monthly historical or stochastically generated inflows.

  • Rendering technique generating 2 dimensional image to give reality and high performance graphical processor for efficient processing of massive data are necessary to support realistic 3 dimensional graphical image. Recently, graphical hardwares have evolved rapidly. This enables high quality rendering effect that we were unable to process in realtime. Improving shading technique enabled us to render realistic images but still much time is required for this process. Multiple operational units are being integrated in a graphical processor for effective floating point operation using massive data to process almost real looking images. In this paper, we have designed and implemented a special functional unit to support high quality 3 dimensional computer graphic image on programmable integrated shader processor. We have done evaluation through functional level simulation of designed special functional unit. Hardware resource usage rate and execution speed are measured implementing directly on FPGA Virtex-4(xc4vlx200).

Learning Graphical Models for DNA Chip Data Mining

  • The past few years have seen a dramatic increase in gene expression data on the basis of DNA microarrays or DNA chips. Going beyond a generic view on the genome, microarray data are able to distinguish between gene populations in different tissues of the same organism and in different states of cells belonging to the same tissue. This affords a cell-wide view of the metabolic and regulatory processes under different conditions, building an effective basis for new diagnoses and therapies of diseases. In this talk we present machine learning techniques for effective mining of DNA microarray data. A brief introduction to the research field of machine learning from the computer science and artificial intelligence point of view is followed by a review of recently-developed learning algorithms applied to the analysis of DNA chip gene expression data. Emphasis is put on graphical models, such as Bayesian networks, latent variable models, and generative topographic mapping. Finally, we report on our own results of applying these learning methods to two important problems: the identification of cell cycle-regulated genes and the discovery of cancer classes by gene expression monitoring. The data sets are provided by the competition CAMDA-2000, the Critical Assessment of Techniques for Microarray Data Mining.

  • Graphical paradigms for assessing the adequacy of models in logistic regression are discussed. The residual plot has been widely used as a graphical tool for evaluating the adequacy of the model. However, this approach works well only for linear models with constant variance, and the alternative approach, the marginal model plot, has its defects as well. We suggest a Chi-residual plot that overcomes the potential shortcomings of the marginal model plot.

  • The tasks in the cadastral field are being carried out by the aid of Parcel Based Land Information System which is equipped with both graphical and textual information acquired by the Cadastral Map Computerization Project. This have the purpose to present efficient surveying method as analyzing the accuracy about the field map We can also avoiding the drafting error caused by graphical cadastral and technical error including scale and contraction error as inverting an existing surveying system to the computer surveying system with this data.

  • This paper presents a design experience of a control language for coordination of a multi-robot system. To effectively program job commands, a Petrinet-type Graphical Robot Language(PGRL) is proposed, where some functions, such as concurrency and synchronization, for coordination among tasks can be easily programmed.In our system, the proposed task commands of PGRL are implemented by employing formal model languages, which are composed of three modules, sensory, data handling, and action module. It is expected that by using our proposed PGRL and formal languages, one can easily describe a job or task, and hence can effectively operate a complex real-time and concurrent system. The control system is being implemented by using VME-based 32-bit microprocessor boards for supervisory, each module controller(arm, hand, leg, sensor data processing module) and a real time multi-tasking operating system(VxWorks).   • Goal of this study is to implement 3-dimensional underwater appearance graphical display, fishery measured information display, sonar data representation and display, and 3-dimensional underwater appearance animation based on coefficient data of chaos behavior and fishing modeling of fishing gears from PC cluster system. In order to accomplish the goals of this study, it is essential to compose user interfacing and realistic description of image scenes in the towing-net fishery simulator, and techniques to describe sand cloud effects under water using particle systems are necessary. In this study, we implemented graphical representations and animations of the simulator by using OpenGL together with C routines.
