Laboratory experiments were conducted with two different soil conditions to investigate rainfall infiltration characteristics. The soil layer materials that were tested were weathered granite soil and weathered gneiss soil. Artificial rainfall of 80 mm/hr was reproduced through the use of a rainfall device, and the volumetric water content and matric suction were measured. In the case of the granite soil, the saturation velocity and the moving direction of the wetting front were fast and upward, respectively, whereas in the case of the weathered gneiss soil, the velocity and direction were slow and downward, respectively. Rainfall penetrated and saturated from the bottom to the top as the hydraulic conductivity of the granite soil was higher than the infiltration capacity of the artificial rainfall. In contrast, as the hydraulic conductivity of the gneiss soil was lower than the infiltration capacity of the rainfall, ponding occurred on the surface: part of the rainfall first infiltrated, with the remaining rainfall subsequently flowing out. The unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function of weathered soils was determined and analyzed with matric suction and the effective degree of saturation.
In this study, decomposed granite soil samples were taken from 16 different regions and their weathering properties were investigated by testing their physical and chemical properties. According to the results, the Chemical Weathering Index (CWI) ranges from 15.5 to 30 in general and 12 out of the 16 regions show over 20 in CWI. The 12 regions are categorized into complete granite soil areas by Sueoka's classification. CWI, Li. $SiO_2,\; \DeltaS/S$ and SAR are all correlated significantly and used as indicators by which the degree of weathering can be judged. The degree of weathering can be measured especially through Li or $SiO_2$ which is considered as an easy approach of geotechnical classification. Also, the relationship between the value of N and Li is regarded as a good indicator in estimating the degree of weathering.
In order to investigate the influence of the water on compression characteristic of decomposed granite soils, a single particle crushing test and one-dimensional compression tests were carried out on three decomposed granite soils and Silica sand. The initial fracture strength for single particle reduced and variability of the strength increases due to weakening by existing water. Moreover, it was recognized that one-dimensional compression characteristic was related to the initial fracture strength characteristic, and the initial fracture strength also has the effect of weathering.
Structure of grassland communities was investigated, and performance of populations of Themeda triandra var. japonica and Miscanthus sinensis were compared on limestone and granite soils. Forty three and forty taxa occurred on the limestone and granite grasslands, respectively, but their similarity was very low. Shoot height and number of hills per patch, as a measure of performance, of Themeda on the limestone grassland were higherthan those on the granite grassland. In contrast, shoot height and number on hills per patch of Miscanthus were higher on limestone than granite grassland. Evidence shows that poor growth of Micanthus population on the limestone soil was associated with higher content of insoluble divalent cations than soluble ones in shoot tissue.
Generally, soil is regarded as fully saturated in Geotechnical Engineering and under ground structure design. Because it is in convenience and safety. But soils treated in field are almost in unsaturated state. Design in unsaturated state is difficult comparing with saturated soil. In unsaturated soil mechanics, parameters are usually not constant unlike saturated soil mechanics. Additionally lab or field tests in unsaturated soil mechanics are required more cost, time and theoretical difficulty. One of essential requisites for examination about unsaturated soil is Soil-Water Characteristic Curve (SWCC). It show the relation between soil suction and soil water content. Through many studies in and out of country, computation and testing methods for SWCC were introduced. But in this the country, most soil is granite soil that is widely spread in Korea. And the studies for granite soil's SWCC are not enough yet. In this paper, through studying for existing proposal methods about computation SWCC and collection data for domestic granite soils, It was determined the suitable method for domestic granite soils, and computed each granite soil's SWCC. The purpose of this paper is establishing database for domestic granite soil's SWCC as each region to convenience for applying to actual affairs. For this, studying about existing proposal methods for SWCC was performed and a computer program Soil-Vision is used. Furthermore for verification theoretical and testing methods were also performed.

The interest in the dynamic properties of soils has increased strongly because of earthquake, heavy traffic, and foundations undergo high amplitude of vibrations. Most of soils in Korean peninsula are composed of granite soils, especially the decomposed mudstone soils are widely spread in Pohang areas, Kyong-buk province. Therefore, it is very important to investigate the dynamic properties of these types of soils. The most important soil parameters under dynamic loadings are shear modulus and material dampings. Furthermore, few definitive data exist that can evaluate the behavior of unsaturated decomposed mudstone soils under dynamic loading conditions. The investigations described in this paper is designed to identify the shear modulus and damping ratio due to a surface tension for the unsaturated decomposed mudstone soils under low and high strain amplitude. For this purpose, the resonant column test and the cyclic triaxial test were performed. Test results and data have shown that the optimum saturated degree of decomposed mudstone soils under low and strain amplitude is $32{\sim}37%$ which is higher than that of decomposed granite due to the amount of fine particles as well as the type and proportion of chief rock-forming minerals.
This research investigated classification of clay activity degree by different clay mineral components. Based on compositions of different clay and oxide minerals within 390 soil series in Korea, 7 soils were selected to analyze for CEC and specific surface area of clay minerals. As a result, soils were mainly composed with Chlorite originated from sandstone, Smectite originated from Andesite porphyry and combination of Allophane and Ferrihydrite originated from volcanic ash, if the ratio of CEC value to clay content (degree of clay activity) was greater than 0.7. If the degree of clay activity was ranged between 0.3 and 0.7, soils were composed mainly with Kaolin originated from anorthite. Soils with this ratio also was composted with combinations of Kaolin, Illite and Vermiculite originated with river deposits. When the degree of the activity was less than 0.3, soils were commonly red-yellowish color and composed with two different minerals. One type of composition was Kaolin originated from granite and granite gneiss and the soils contained Geothite and Hematite. The other type was composited mainly with Illite and Vermiculite minerals originated from granite. These soils contained Gibbsite, Geothite and Hematite. The degree of clay activity was highly related with CEC and specific surface area. The greater degree of the activity displayed greater values of clay CEC and specific surface area. It is not easy to measure actual quantity and compositions of clay minerals, while the degree of clay activity can be measured from routine soil analyses. As a conclusion, the degree of clay activity may be not just a simple but also powerful tool to estimate physical-chemical properties of soils and to evaluate the soil classification in Korean soils.
The weathering rates and change of chemical composition of 6 residual Entisols derived from granite, granite-gneiss, limestone, sandstone, shale, amd basalt in Korea were studied. The chemical composition of each profile with parent rocks were determined using XRF with the physico-chemical properties and the morphology of soils. In the A horizons of all the soils except Euiseong series, the content of clay, organic matter and cation exchange capacity(CEC) showed higher than those of C horizon, but bulk density and pH showed lower than C horizon. Clay content in the soil from sandstone was decrease with soil depth, which may caused by the elluriation. In total element analysis. $SiO_2$ was high in the soil from granite. granite-gneiss, sandstone and compare with basalt and limestone. $Fe_2O_3$ and MgO was high in the soil from basalt, limestone and shale compare with granite. granite-gneiss and sandstone. And ignition loss was particularly high in the soil from basalt and limestone. The rate of element loss was higher in base cations(Ca, K, Mg, Na) than Si, Al, Fe in the soils. The concentrations of $TiO_2$ in the A horizon compare with that of the C horizon was due to resulting from losses of other less stable elements existed. Considering with relative rate of each elements in soils, $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ which originated from sandstone and granite, granite-gneiss, sandstone, shale, and basalt were lost higher than those from lime tone, but loss of basic cations were more in the soil from limestone which may be rapid weathering of calcite. The magnitude of losses of the overall elements were increased in the order of the soils from sandstone and granite ${\gg}$ limestone and shale) granite-gneiss and basalt.
In order to investigate the strength and deformation anisotropy of compacted decomposed granite soils, a series of unsaturated-drained triaxial compression tests were performed. The sample used in the study was decomposed granite soil from Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi prefecture. The sample had three different angles of the axial (major principal) direction to the sedimentation plane (compaction plane), 0, 45 and 90 degrees. The compression strain of specimens subjected to isotropic compression was strongly influenced by the sedimentation angle. In addition, the time dependence was independent of the sedimentation angle in relation to the deformation behavior during the secondary compression process. The effect of the sedimentation angle on the triaxial compression strength and deformation was clear with low confining stress. Moreover, it was recognized that although the sedimentation angle and preparation methods were different, the dilatancy rate was relative to the increment of strength due to dilatancy. Therefore, it may be concluded that the compacted specimen has anisotropic mechanical properties similar to those of sand with initial fabric anisotropy.
Effects of weathering intensity on the adsorption of heavy metals such as lead(Pb) and copper(Cu) onto decomposed granite soils were investigated by a series of batch tests. The chemical components such as $SiO_2$, $K_2O$ and $Na_2O$ having relatively high solubility were reduced and the oxidized $Fe_2O_3$ content was increased with the increase of weathering intensity. Weathering of granite soils increased the ignition loss and specific surface area, while it decreased the permeability. The lead and copper adsorptions onto the decomposed granites were enhanced with the increase of weathering intensity, mainly due to the increase of specific surface area and clayed contents. Adsorption of lead and copper onto the weathered granites could be more adequately described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model than the pseudo-first-order model.
