This study evaluates the accuracy of corrective feedback from Grammarly, an online grammar checker, on essays written by cyber university learners in terms of detected errors, suggested replacement forms, and false alarms.The results indicate that Grammarly has a high overall error detection rate of over 65%, being particularly strong at catching errors related to articles and prepositions. In addition, on the detected errors, Grammarly mostly provide accurate replacement forms and very rarely make false alarms. These findings suggest that Grammarly has high potential as a useful educational tool to complement the drawbacks of teacher feedback and to help learnersimprove grammatical accuracy in their written work. However, it is still premature to conclude that Grammarly can completely replace teacher feedback because it has the possibility (approximately 35%) of failing to detect errors and the limitationsin detecting errors in certain categories. Since the feedback from Grammarly is not entirely reliable, caution should be taken for successful integration of Grammarly in English writing classes. Teachers should make judicious decisions on when and how to use Grammarly, based on a keen awareness of Grammarly's strengths and limitations.

본 연구에서는 사이버 대학생들의 영작문에 대해 교수자가 충분한 피드백을 제공할 수 없는 상황에서 학생들에게 교정적 피드백을 제공하기 위해 온라인 문법 검사기 Grammarly를 활용한 후 그 교육적 효용성에 대한 학습자들의 인식을 조사하였다. 설문 결과에 따르면 학습자 대다수가 Grammarly의 유용성에 대해서 긍정적으로 생각하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 원할 때면 언제나 즉시 이용 가능한 피드백은 영어 문장력 향상에 도움이 되었다고 평가했으며, 피드백의 양적인 측면에 대한 만족도도 높게 나타났다. Grammarly는 학습자의 정의적 측면에서도 긍정적으로 작용하여 영작문에 대한 흥미도와 자신감 향상에 도움이 된 것으로 보인다. 그리고 원활한 영작문 학습을 저해하는 주요 요인 중의 하나인 영작문에 불안감을 감소시키는데 효과적이었던 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 이러한 긍정적인 결과와 함께 부정확한 피드백과 오류에 대한 부적절한 설명 등과 같은 한계도 발견되었다. 따라서 Grammarly를 영어 교육에 활용할 경우 이러한 한계로 인해 생길 수 있는 문제점들을 최소화할 수 있는 효과적인 교수법 개발을 위한 다각적인 연구가 진행될 필요가 있다.

본 연구에서는 영어쓰기에서 활용되고 있는 온라인 자동쓰기평가 프로그램을 활용하는데 있어서 학생들의 인식 및 태도를 살펴보는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 총 131명이 참여하였고 참여자는 대학교 1학년 초급수준의 학습자들로 구성되어있다. 연구도구로는 사전·사후 설문지, 사전·사후 테스트 그리고 학습저널의 자료가 수집되고 분석되었다. 연구는 2019년 2학기, 총 15주에 걸쳐 실시되었으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 설문에 참여한 학생들은 스스로 영문법에 어려움이 있고 영작문에 있어서 피드백이 도움이 된다고 생각하고 있었다. 둘째, Grammarly 활용에 있어서 학생들은 전반적으로 긍정적인 태도를 보이고 있었다. Grammarly는 영어학습과 과제수행에 도움이 되었고 활용도 면에서도 높게 나타났다. 마지막으로 사전·사후 문법테스트에서 Grammarly의 효과성은 유의미한 결과를 보였다. 본 연구결과를 토대로 한 제안점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학생들이 프로그램을 적극적으로 활용할 수 있도록 익숙해지는 시간을 갖도록 해야 한다. 둘째, 교사는 학생들에게 AWE(Automated Writing Evaluation)의 피드백이 항상 정확하지만은 않다는 것을 이해하도록 해야 한다. 마지막으로 교사의 피드백이 반드시 함께 제공되어야 한다.

The majority of research on Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) programs has focused primarily on Grammarly, whereas QuillBot and its use in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms remains limitedly explored. This study examined the effectiveness of using QuillBot on the writing quality of college students. A total of 26 participants took pre- and post-writing tests, and four analytical tools were applied to assess their writing quality in terms of syntactic complexity, lexical diversity, lexical richness, and readability. Results of the syntactic complexity analysis across the four indices demonstrates that the syntactic complexity of EFL writing increased significantly, and substantial differences were observed in lexical richness and readability. These results suggest that QuillBot can compensate for the drawbacks of Grammarly and assist EFL writers in improving their overall writing quality.

본 논문은 온라인 문법체커에 대해서 살펴보고 영어쓰기에 있어서 온라인 문법체커 활용 시에 유의해야 할 점에 대해 제언을 하는데 목적이 있다. 본 연구는 충청도에 있는 D 대학교에서 2019년 2학기에 실시하였으며 총 35명의 대학교 1학년 학생이 참여하였다. 본 연구 자료 수집을 위해서 사전 · 사후의 문법 테스트와 설문지 그리고 학습저널이 수집되었고 분석되었다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 영어문법 테스트 결과 온라인 문법체커는 영어쓰기수업에서 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 학생들은 온라인 문법체커에서 제공되는 피드백 무조건 받아들이기 보다는 스스로 판단하여 수용을 하거나 하지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 온라인 문법체커에서 제공하는 피드백 중 (부정)관사, 전치사, 문장부호, 동사 수의 일치, 명사수의 일치 순으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과를 바탕으로 시사점과 제한점을 토론하였다.

Plagiarism detection software is beneficial in detecting plagiarism in research works of postgraduate students. Despite the benefits of using plagiarism detection software, studies have revealed that most students, including postgraduates, do not use plagiarism detection software as expected. This could depend on the provision of facilitating conditions like internet connectivity, training opportunities and electricity. Thus, this study examined facilitating conditions and the use of plagiarism detection software among postgraduates of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design of the correlational type was used for this study, with a population of 2143 postgraduates. The multi-stage random sampling technique was used to determine the sample size of 242. The questionnaire was the research instrument, and data was analysed using descriptive statistics. Results showed that most postgraduates agreed that the university provided facilitating conditions like internet connectivity. The majority of the respondents noted that they used Turnitin monthly. Most of the respondents noted that they used plagiarism detection software to paraphrase their work and check the correctness of the grammar in their documents. The most prominent challenges confronting plagiarism detection software use by most respondents were their inability to afford subscription payment to use the plagiarism detection software and slow internet connectivity. There was a significant positive relationship between facilitating conditions and the use of plagiarism detection software by the postgraduates of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Some of the recommendations for the institution's management include leveraging the vast network of alumni willing to give back to the institution and intervening in the provision of internet connectivity and electricity.
