  • In this paper, we propose and develop a new algorithm for the principle subspace tracking by orthonormalizing the eigenvectors using an approximation of Gram-Schmidt procedure. We carry out a novel mathematical derivation to show that when this approximated version of Gram-Schmidt procedure is added to a modified form of projection approximation subspace tracking deflation (PASTd) algorithm, the eigenvectors can be orthonormalized within a linear computational complexity. While the PASTd algorithm tries to extracts orthonormalized eigenvectors, the new scheme orthonormalizes the eigenvectors after their extraction, yielding much more tacking efficiency. We apply the new tracking scheme for blind adaptive multiuser detection for non-stationary cellular CDMA environment and use extensive simulation results to demonstrate the performance improvement of the proposed scheme.

  • In this paper, we study the performance of subspace-based multiuser detection techniques for multicarrier code-division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems. We propose an improvement in the PASTd algorithm by cascading it with the classical Gram-Schmidt procedure to orthonormalize the eigenvectors after their sequential extraction. The tracking of signal subspace using this algorithm, which we call OPASTd, has a faster convergence as the eigenvectors are orthonormalized at each discrete time sample. This improved PASTd algorithm is then used to implement the subspace blind adaptive multiuser detection for MC-CDMA. We also show that, for multiuser detection, the complexity of the proposed scheme is lower than that of many other orthogonalization schemes found in the literature. Extensive simulation results are presented and discussed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme.

  • The effects of two important numerical procedures on the high precision structural analysis are investigated in this study. The two numerical procedures include continuous variable approximation and time integration. For the continuous variable approximation, polynomial mode functions generated by the Gram-Schmidt process are introduced and the numerical results obtained by employing the polynomial mode functions are compared to those obtained by classical beam mode functions. The effect of the time integration procedure on the analysis precision is also investigated. It is found that the two procedures affect the precision of structural analysis significantly.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for the capacitance extraction of general 3-dimensional conductors in an ideal uniform dielectric that uses a high-order quadrature approximation method combined with the typical first-order collocation method to enhance the accuracy and adopts an efficient matrix-vector product algorithm for the model-order reduction to achieve efficiency. The proposed method enhances the accuracy using the quadrature method for interconnects containing corners and vias that concentrate the charge density. It also achieves the efficiency by reducing the model order using the fact that large parts of system matrices are of numerically low rank. This technique combines an SVD-based algorithm for the compression of rank-deficient matrices and Gram-Schmidt algorithm of a Krylov-subspace iterative technique for the rapid multiplication of matrices. It is shown through the performance evaluation procedure that the combination of these two techniques leads to a more efficient algorithm than Gaussian elimination or other standard iterative schemes within a given error tolerance.

  • To accurately predict the motion of a submergible, the nonlinear structure of dynamic model should be selected and corresponding parameters should be estimated using model test. Providing the model structure, only the values of parameters are unknown and the estimation can thus be formulated as a standard least square problem. Unfortunately, the nonlinear model structure of submersibles is rarely known a prior and method of model structure determination from measurement data of model test should be developed and included as a vital part of the estimation procedure. In this study, the well-known linear least square algorithm for the analysis of model tests and a way to measure the goodness are reviewed, and the identification algorithm based on an orthogonal decomposition method of Gram-Schmidt is extended to combine structure selection and maneuvering coefficients estimation in a very simple and efficient manner. Finally, the efficiency of this algorithm is verified by using simulation and applying to the analysis of model test of a submerged body. As a result, it was verified that this combined method might be very erective in selecting the structure of dynamic model estimating the maneuvering coefficients from measurement fiat of model test.

  • It was shown that if Q is a fully indecomposable $n{\times}n$ orthogonal matrix then Q has at least 4n-4 nonzero entries in 1993. In this paper, we show that for each integer p with $4n-4{\leq}p{\leq}n^2$, there exist a fully indecomposable $n{\times}n$ orthogonal matrix with exactly p nonzero entries. Furthermore, we obtain a method of construction of a fully indecomposable $n{\times}n$ orthogonal matrix which has exactly 4n-4 nonzero entries. This is a part of the study in sparse matrices.

  • The natural frequencies and modes of free vibration of specially orthotropic elliptic and circular plates are analysed using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The assumed functions used are two-dimensional boundary characteristic orthogonal polynomials which are generated using the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure. The first five natural frequencies are reported here for various values of aspect ratio of the ellipse. Results are given for various boundary conditions at the edges i.e., the boundary may be any of clamped, simply-supported or fret. Numerical results are presented here for several orthotropic material properties. For rectilinear orthotropic circular plates, a few results are available in the existing literature, which are compared with the present results and are found to be in good agreement.

  • In this paper, pseudo-random ternary sequence (PRTS) was used to investigate the cardiovascular and respiratory responses to hypoxia and hypercapnia. The actual input or this study was the changes in inhaled oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations. It is hard to randomly change the concentration within a given breath. Since PRTS has almost the same statistical properties as Gaussian white noise, plus it is physically realizable, PRTS is used for this study. Using PRTS and Volterra kernels by Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure, the cardiovascular and respiratory responses to hypoxia and hypercapnia were analyzed.
