  • In optmizing cutting condition for face milling operation, tool wear is an important maching factor. For the purpose of establishing the relationship between various maching factor and tool wear, cutting tests have been performed. As a result, hardness and chemical composition of workpiece material, chemical compositition and grain size of cutting tool and cutting speed have been selected as machining factor. In addition, relationship between feed rate and workpiece hardness has been observed. Prior to utilizing cutting condition recommended by 'Machining Data Hardbook(MDH)' as a Knowledge base, an analysis for the validity has been provided. Based on this analysis, tool life criteria applied by MDH has been modifiied. Finaly, using MDH recommended data for neural network trainning, we can compensate the result form the trained neural network for optimizing cutting condition for some given workpice and cutting tool.

  • The quality of tool material is very important factor in machining evaluation. The characteristics of tungsten carbide, such as grain size and hardness, and density are depending on the variation of Co composition and WC size. In this study, the non-coated end mill which is made of ultra-fine tungsten carbide is investigated by measuring tool wear and tool lift test. The machining test is conducted with high hardened workpiece under high-speed cutting condition.

  • Surface damage accumulation of alumina ceramics under the cyclic stress state was analyzed. The alternating stress state in repeat pass sliding contact was simulated by a synchronized biaxial (normal and tangential) repeated indentation technique. Wear debris formation mechanism through damage accumulation and fatigue grain failure in both alumina ceramic balls and flat disks was confirmed, and the contact induced surface degradation due to fatigue cracking accumulation was quantified by measuring vertical contact displacement. Variation of structural compliance (slope of load-displacement curve) of two contacting bodies was expressed as a variation of the apparent elastic property, called pseudo-elastic constant, of the contact system.

  • The influence of the boron content on the various properties of Ni-B alloy films produced by electrodeposition was investigated. The considerable reduction in grain size was observed with increasing boron content. The internal stress was tensile and increased linearly with increasing boron content. Hardness increased up to $750H_{v}$ at 2 at% boron and then kept the value to 11 at% boron for as-plated Ni-B coatings. The hardness of Ni-B films increased up to $1,250H_{v}$ due to the intermetallic$ Ni_3$B precipitation by the heat treatment, and maximum hardness of each coating increases with boron content. Wear resistance decreased with increasing the boron content because of high friction coefficient and brittle fracture of film which has higher content of boron.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of high speed grinding and the influence of wheel surface speed V and a grindability of the grinding materials. The various fine ceramics pieces was ground by metal and vitrified bonded diamond wheel. The surface roughness of fine ceramics(Zirconia($ZrO_2$), Silicon Carbide(SiC), Silicon Nitride($Si_3N_4$), Alumina($Al_2O_3$)) decreases from $0.05{\mu}m(R_{max})$ to $0.025{\mu}m(R_{max})$ when the wheel speed at grinding point increases the wheel speed. Relation between the temperature at grinding point and surface roughness was linear. Abrasive jet machining(AJM), a specialized from of shot blasting, is considered one of the most helpful micro machining methods for hard and brittle materials such as glasses and ceramics by constant pressure grinding.

  • Nano-structured ceramics, which consist of structural elements with nanometer-size crystallites, are expected to show various unusual properties. We developed the novel nano-structured ceramics which consists of $Si_3N_4$ and TiN and a self-lubricant material. The ceramics was fabricated by powder metallurgy process using mechano-chemical grinding process and short-time sintering process. Each grain size of matrix and the self-lubricant particle was under about 50 nm and a few namometer. It showed high wear resistance and low friction coefficient by controlling of microstructure.

  • Effects of plasma nitriding on the surface charcteristice of stainless steel(SS) were investjgated by utilizing wear tester, micro-hardness tester and potentiostat. The surface and corrosion morphology of plasma nitrided SS were analyzed by utilizing optical microscopy, SEM, XRD and WDX. It was found that plasma nitriding at $550^{\circ}C$, compared with $380^{\circ}C$, prodiced a good wear resistance and hardness as nitriding time increased, whereas Mo addition showd that were resistance and hardness decreased. Intergranular corrosion(IGC) resistance improved significantly in the case of plasma nirtrided SS containing 4.05wt% Mo at $380^{\circ}C$ because that nitrogen and Mo ast syner gidically to form a protective layer on surface which is responsible for the aggresive SCN-ion. Plasma nitrided at $550^{\circ}C$ decreased IGC as Mo content increased. Pitting improved in the plasma nitirided SS at Mo content incresased owing to retard a nucleation and growth of chromium carbide or nitirde in grain boundary.

  • This paper aims to clarify the effects of grinding conditions on bending strength in surface grinding of various ferrites with the resin bond diamond wheel. The main conclusions obtained were as follows. At a constant material removal rate, the strength improves with increased wheel depth of cut and decreased workpiece speed. It is desirable to grind at higher peripheral wheel speed and under the critical workpiece speed presented in this paper. Grinding the ferrite of higher brittleness, the wheel depth of cut limited to hold 50% of their inherent strength becomes lower. The effect of various grinding conditions on bending strength becomes more larger in the order of Sr, Mn-Zn and Cu-Ni-Zn. When using the diamond grain of the lower toughness, the bending strength becomes higher, and the wheel wear occurs faster. Considering both bending strength and wheel wear rate, the best concentration of wheel is 100. The ground surfaces exhibit that the fracture process during grinding becomes more brittle in the order of Sr, Mn-Zn and Cu-Ni-Zn.

  • In the grinding process, the degree of the sharpness in wheel grain affects the surface roughness and the dimensional accuracy. If a wheel with dull grains is used, te grinding force will be increased and the surface roughness deteriorated. To produce a precision component, the magnitude of parameters related to the wear amount of a grinding wheel has to be limited. In this study, a variation of the grinding force and the surface roughness were measured to seek the machining characteristics of the WA and CBN wheels. From the wear amount of the grinding wheel and the removal rate of workpiece, the grinding ratio was calculated. And also the wheel life was determined at a rapid decreasing point of the grinding ratio. The difference between the surface of wheel-workpiece before grinding and after wheel life was clearly verified with a microscopic photo.
