Effect of Silicon on Intergranular Corrosion Resistance of Ti-stabilized 11 wt% Cr Ferritic Stainless Steels (11 wt% 크롬이 함유된 Ti 첨가 페라이트스테인리스강의 입계부식에 미치는 규소의 영향)

  • Ti-stabilized 11 wt% Cr ferritic stainless steels (FSSs) for automotive exhaust systems have been experienced intergranular corrosion (IC) in some heat-affected zone (HAZ). The effects of sensitizing heat-treatment and silicon on IC were studied. Time-Temperature-Sensitization (TTS) curves showed that sensitization to IC was observed at the steels heat-treated at the temperature lower than $650^{\circ}C$ and that silicon improved IC resistance. The sensitization was explained by chromium depletion theory, where chromium is depleted by precipitation of chromium carbide during sensitizing heat-treatment. It was confirmed with the results from the analysis of precipitates as well as the thermodynamical prediction of stable phases. In addition, the role of silicon on IC was explained with the stabilization of grain boundary. In other words, silicon promoted the formation of the grain boundaries with low energy where precipitation was suppressed and consequently, the formation of Cr-depleted zone was retarded. The effect of silicon on the formation of grain boundaries with low energy was proved by the analysis of coincidence site lattice (CSL) grain boundary, which is a typical grain boundary with low energy.

Ferroelectric Properties of Bi3.25La0.75Ti3O12 Thin Films with Various Drying Temperature for FRAM Applications (FRAM 응용을 위한 건조온도에 따른 BLT 박막의 강유전 특성)

  • Ferroelectric lanthanum-substituted Bi$_4$Ti$_3$O$_{12}$(BLT) thin films were fabricated by spin-coating onto a Pt/Ti/SiO$_2$/Si substrate by metalorganic decomposition technique. The grain size in BLT thin films were prepared with controlled by various drying process. The effect of grain size on the crystallization and ferroelectric properties were investigated by x-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscope. The dependence of crystallization and electrical properties are related to the grain size in BLT thin films with different drying temperature. The remanent polarization of BLT thin film increases with the increasing grain size. The value of 2P$_{r}$ and E$_{c}$ of BLT thin film dried at 45$0^{\circ}C$ were 25.9 $\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 85 kV/cm, respectively. The BLT thin film with larger grain size has better fatigue properties. The fatigue properties revealed that small grained film showed more degradation of switching charge than large grained films.lms.s.

Grain Refinement and Microstructural Instability of an AZ31 Mg Alloy by Severe Plastic Deformation Using ECA Pressing (ECAP 강가공에 의한 마그네슘 AZ31합금의 결정립 미세화 및 미세조직 불안정성)

  • Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) technique had been adapted to the Mg alloy (AZ31) for achieving effective grain refinement through severe deformation. The average grain size of $2.5{\mu}m$ could be obtained after 4 passes. The stability of the ECAPed structure at elevated temperatures was examined by annealing the ECAPed materials over a wide range of temperature between 473 and 748 K. The average activation energy, Q, for static grain growth of 1, 2 and 3 passes was 33.7 kJ/mole (=0.25QL, activation for lattice diffusion). The abnormally low Q value in the lower temperature range may indicate that grain growth occurs in the unrecrystallized microstructure where non-equilibrium grain boundaries containing a large number of extrinsic dislocations exist. The yield stresses of the ECAPed alloys decreased whereas the elongations increased after the ECAP process. These results should be related to the modification of texture for easier slip on basal plane.

  • Microstructural and magnetic properties of nanocrystalline Fe-46 wt%Ni and Fe-36 wt%Ni alloys were investigated. Alloys were prepared by the electrodeposition process. The electrolytes were iron sulfate/nickel chloride-based and iron chloride/nickel sulfamate-based solutions. Fe-46 wt%Ni alloy was FCC structure with grain size of 10 nm, but FCC and BCC phases were found in Fe-36 wt%Ni alloy and its grain size was smaller. Effective permeability of Fe-36 wt%Ni alloy was higher than that of Fe-46 wt%Ni alloy in the high frequency range because of large electrical resistivity and small eddy current loss resulted from grain size decrease. Up to $300^{\circ}C$ of annealing temperature, grain growth of Fe-Ni alloys slowly occured. Conversely, annealing above $450^{\circ}C$ led to a drastic grain growth. In that case, effective permeability was decreased at the temperature lower than $300^{\circ}C$ but at $300^{\circ}C$ or higher effective permeability was increased. At the high frequency of 1 MHz, electrodeposited Fe-Ni alloys had higher effective permeability with an decrease in the grain size.

Changes in Water Content Affect the Post-Milling Quality of Paddy Rice Stored at Low Temperature

  • Purpose: In this study, the effect of milling on paddy rice stored at low temperature, the changes in grain temperature of bulk storage bags exposed at room temperature, the post-milling water content of paddy rice, the whiteness of rice, and the rate of pest incidence were investigated and data were analyzed. Methods: Changes in temperature inside the bulk storage bags kept at low temperature and grain temperature after exposure to room temperature were measured. Experiments were conducted for identifying the reasons of post-milling quality changes in paddy rice stored at low temperature. Results: It was determined that a short-term increase of water content in paddy rice was directly related to surface condensation, and that rice should be milled at least 72 h after removal from low-temperature storage, in order to completely eliminate surface condensation of paddy rice kept in bulk storage bags. It was observed that post-milling quality of rice changed, but water content was maintained at high levels for more than 18 d in rice that was milled when condensation occurred, regardless of paper or vinyl packaging. Rice whiteness rapidly decreased in rice that was milled when condensation occurred, regardless of packaging, while rice that was milled 72 h or more after removal from low temperature storage did not show any significant changes in whiteness. No pest incidence was observed up to 12 d after removal from low temperature storage, regardless of packaging. Starting at 18 d, after removal from low temperature storage, rice that was milled when condensation occurred, was affected by pests, while 24 d after removal from low temperature storage, all portions of rice were affected by pests. Conclusions: Our results suggest that changes in post-milling quality of rice could be significantly reduced by exposing paddy rice to room temperature for at least 72 h before milling, in order to allow the increase of grain temperature and prevent surface condensation.

  • The grain temperature is a crucial factor determining the deterioration rate of stored grain. Therefore, it is used to be predicted in order to evaluate the various stored methods rapidly and inexpensively. In this study, a mathematical model was developed to simulate the temperatures of grain stored in a cylinderical bin. It was formulated for the two dimensional heat transfer by the finite difference method. Then, it was verified statistically using the actual test deta and the predicted. The changes of grain temperature were analyed using the simulated data of one year for a safe stoarge and the following results were obtained: 1. Simulation model developed by the finite difference method was validated with the actual and the predicted grain temperatures and it's result showed that it could predict the grain temperature of storage bin reasonably well. 2. Grain temperature near the wall of storage bin were changed with $6-7^{\circ}C$ higher then average atmospheric temperature from June to September. Therefore, the parts of stored grain near the wall is supposed to be deteriorated fast. 3. When the dimension of bin diameter is about the same as the bed height, the changes of grain temperature of radial direction was higher than the verticals. 4. The predicted temperature showed that the grain temperature of which were from the end of April to mid October were higher than the safe storage limit at Yusung, Korea.

Improvement of Mechanical Properties of Mg alloys through Control of Grain Size and Texture (결정립크기와 집합조직제어를 통한 마그네슘 합금의 기계적 성질 개선)

  • The effects of lowering ECAP temperature during ECAP process and Post-ECAP annealing on microstructure, texture and mechanical properties of the AZ31 alloys have been investigated in the present study. The as-extruded materials were ECAP processed to 2 passes at 553K prior to subsequent pressing up to 6 passes at 523K or 493K. When this method of lowering ECAP temperature during ECAP was used, the rods could be successfully deformed up to 6 passes without any surface cracking. Grain refinement during ECAP process at 553K might have helped the material to endure further straining at lower deformation temperatures probably by increasing the strain accommodation effect by grain boundary sliding, causing stress relaxation. Texture modification during ECAP has a great influence on the strength of Mg alloys because HCP metals have limited number of slip systems. As slip is most prone to take place on basal planes in Mg at room temperature, the rotation of high fraction of basal planes to the directions favorable for slip as in ECAP decreases the yield stress appreciably. The strength of AZ31 Mg alloys increases with decrease of grain size if the texture is constant though ECAP deformation history is different. A standard positive strength dependence on the grain size for Mg alloys with the similar texture (Fig. 1) supports that the softening of ECAPed Mg alloys (a negative slope) typically observed despite the significant grain refinement is due to the texture modification where the rotation of basal planes occurs towards the orientation for easier slip. It could be predicted that if the original fiber texture is restored after ECAP treatment yielding marked grain refinement, yield stress as high as 500 MPa will be obtained at the grain size of ${\sim}1{\mu}m$. Differential speed rolling (DSR) with a high speed ratio between the upper and lower rolls was applied to alter the microstructure and texture of the AZ31 sheets. Significant grain refinement took place during the rolling owing to introduction of large shear deformation. Grain size as small as $1.4{\mu}m$ could be obtained at 423K after DSR. There was a good correlation between the (0002) pole intensity and tensile elongation. This result indicates that tensile ductility improvement in the asymmetrically rolled AZ31 Mg alloys is closely related to the weakening of basal texture during DSR. Further basal texture weakening occurred during annealing after DSR. According to Hall-Petch relation shown in Fig. 1, the strength of the asymmetrically rolled AZ31 is lower than that of the symmetrically rolled one when compared at the same grain size. This result was attributed to weakening of fiber texture during DSR. The DSRed AZ31, however, shows higher strength than the ECAPed AZ31 where texture has been completely replaced by a new texture associated with high Schmid factors.

Effects of Temperature and Sunshine Hours During Grain Filling Stage on the Quality-Related Traits of High Quality Rice Varieties in Korea (우리나라 고품질 벼 품종의 쌀 품질 특성에 미치는 등숙기 단계별 기온과 일조시간의 영향)

  • Relationship between grain quality-related traits and daily mean temperature/sunshine hours during grain filling stage was analyzed using eleven high quality rice varieties at 24 experimental sites through eight provinces of Korea in 2013~2014. In the data set pooled across varieties, experimental sites and years, grain quality-related traits such as percentage of head rice (PHR), head rice yield (HRY), protein in milled rice (PRO) and Toyo Mido Meter glossiness value (TGV) were higher at the temperature lower than $22.6^{\circ}C$ for 40 days after flowering (DAF), which was optimum for percentage of grain filling in this study. Optimum sunshine hours for 40 DAF were $6.0{\sim}6.1\;hr\;d^{-1}$when considered PHR, HRY and TGV. PRO was associated with daily mean temperature and sunshine hours for 40 DAF in more varieties than the other traits. PRO was closely correlated with daily mean temperature during early filling stage and sunshine hours during early to mid filling stage, compared to other stages during grain filling. It is concluded that general trend in the variation of grain quality-related traits could be explained by the changes in daily mean temperature and sunshine hours during grain filling. In addition, climate conditions during early grain filling stage played important roles to enhance grain quality.

Evaluation of yield and growth responses on paddy rice under the extremely high temperature using temperature gradient field chamber (온도구배야외챔버를 이용한 고온에서의 벼 생육반응 및 수량성 평가)

  • The effect of elevated temperature on temperate paddy rice will be significant for dependable food supply in East Asia. Using temperature gradient field chamber (TGFC), which was designed to make the horizontal air temperature gradient by $0^{\circ}C$ to $3^{\circ}C$ higher than outside, we examined the measurement to understand the effects of extremely high temperature on paddy rice. In particular, the data of the year 2016, the worst heat wave in over 22 years, was analyzed in this study. The rice height in the relatively warmed condition was rapidly increased during early growth stage. However, the average grain weight and number of spikelet per panicle in the warmed chamber condition were gradually declined with increasing air temperature averaged for 40 days after first heading in each chamber. In particular, the grain yield was more dramatically decreased by the raising temperature because the percent ripened grain was quickly dropped as getting over the threshold temperature for pollination. Therefore, the surplus photosynthetic product by such lower grain filling rate may disturbed the decreases of the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and SPAD chlorophyll values after first (normal) heading. In addition, the late-emerging head grain were appeared. However, this yield was too small to recover the normal yields decreased by extremely high temperature condition. Our result represented that the warmed condition in 2016 would be the critical limit for the stable yield of temperate paddy rice.

Critical Temperature for Grain Filling of Japonica Rice in Korea (우리나라 자포니카 벼 품종의 등숙 한계온도 분석)

  • Critical temperature for grain filling of three Korean japonica rice varieties was analyzed by late transplantation to induce a low temperature during grain filling period in a field study. The grain filling percentage (GFP) and grain dry weight (GDW) showed a sigmoid development for the first and second transplants in 2020 and first to third transplants in 2021. For the third transplant in 2020 and fourth transplant in 2021, the GFP and GDW reached a peak at 42 days after heading (DAH), and then decreased or remained unchanged. In non-linear regression analyses, 95% of the final GFP and GDW appeared at 49 - 62 DAH for the second transplant in 2020 and at 37 - 46 DAH and 30 - 36 DAH for the second and third transplants in 2021, respectively. At these time points, the critical seven-day moving temperature (7dMovT) was 8.4~9.4℃ for the second transplant in 2020 and 9.4~10.9℃ for the second and third transplants in 2021, depending on the grain filling traits and varieties of rice. The lowest 7dMovT was 8.4 - 8.7℃ in the three varieties. The observed lowest 7-day mean temperature (7dMT) accompanying increases in the GFP and GDW was 9.4 - 10.1℃, depending on the varieties in the third transplant of 2020 and fourth transplant of 2021. In the two transplants mentioned above, the highest 7dMT that showed no increase or decrease in grain filling traits was 8.7 - 9.1℃. The critical temperature for grain filling of japonica rice was 8.4 - 8.7℃ based on the 7dMovT and 9.1 - 9.4℃ based on the 7dMT. The previous 7dMT of 10℃ is recommended to determine the marginal harvest time for safe rice cropping since the temperature was the highest among the lowest temperature that accompanied an increase in grain filling traits.
