  • Milli-structure components are classified as a component group whose size is between macro and micro scales, that is, about less than 20mm and larger than 1mm. The bending of these components of thin sheets has a typical phenomenon of bulk deformation because of the forming size. The recent trend towards miniaturization causes an increased demand for parts with very small dimensions. The conceptual miniature bending process enables the production of such parts with high productivity and accuracy. The stress values of the flow curve decrease with miniaturization, which means that coarse grained materials show a higher resistance against deformation, when the grain size is in the range of the sheet thickness. In this paper, a new numerical approach is proposed to simulate intergranular milli-structure in forming by the finite element method. The grain element and grain boundary element are introduced to simulate the milli-structure of strip in the bending. The grain element is used to analyze the deformation of individual grain while the grain boundary element is for the investigation on the movement of the grain boundary. Also, the result of the finite element analysis is confirmed by a series of milli-sized forming experiments.

  • This study presents a new computational model to analyze the grain deformation in a polycrystalline aggregate in a discrete manner and based directly in the underlying physical micro-mechanisms. When scaling down a metal forming process, the dimensions of the workpiece decrease but the microstructure of the workpiece remains the similar. Since the dimensions of the workpiece are very small, the microstructure especially the grain size will play an important role in micro forming, which is called size effects. As a result, specific characteristics have to be considered for the numerical analysis. The grains and grain boundary elements are introduced to model individual grains and grain boundary facets, respectively, to consider the size effects in the micro forming. The constitutive description of the grain elements accounts for the rigid-plastic and the grain boundary elements for visco-elastic relationships. The capability of the proposed approach is demonstrated through application of grain element and grain boundary element in the micro forming.

  • Densification, grain growth, and phase transformation of nanocrystalline ceramic powder were investigated under pressureless sintering, sinter forging, and hot pressing. A constitutive model for densification of nanocrystalline ceramic powder was proposed and implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS). A grain growth model was also proposed by including the effect of applied stress on grain growth when phase transformation occurs. Finite element results by using the proposed models well predicted densification behavior, deformation, and grain growth of nanocrystalline titania powder during pressureless sintering, sinter forging, and hot pressing. Finite element results by using the proposed model also well predicted experimental data in the literature for densification behavior of nanocrystalline zirconia powder during pressureless sintering and sinter forging.

  • As the application of the MEMS parts increases, the structural safety of MEMS appears importantly. A lot of MEMS parts are made by a multi-grain silicon wafer, which is an orthotropic material. Moreover directions of the materials on each grain are distributed randomly. The stress analysis for the multi-grain is important factor in order to apply the MEMS parts to industrial applications. The finite element method (FEM) is commonly used by a stress analysis method but the boundary element method (BEM) is known as the result of the BEM is more accurate than that of the FEM since the fundamental solution are used. In this study, we derived the boundary integration equation for the orthotropic material by applying fundamental solutions with complex variables. The multi-region analysis procedure for the BEM and the multi-grain generation procedure by a random process technique are developed in order to apply the analysis of the multi-grain orthotropic material. The discontinuous element is used in order to remove the comer problem in the BEM. The results of the present method are compared with those of the finite element method in order to verify the present procedure.

  • Finite element simulations were conducted to investigate the influence of grain growth in the superplastic blow forming process. A microstructure-based constitutive model considering grain growth effects is proposed and used in the simulations. Also, a grain growth rate equation accounting for both static and dynamic grain growth is implemented. The simulations were made using a 2D plane-strain model for constrained blow forming and an axisymmetric model for free bulging. These two models showed different features during the forming stages. However, the forming pressure-time curve and the thickness distribution obtained by both simulations explained well the deformation hardening induced by the grain growth during superplastic forming. This study shows that grain growth is an important factor in determining the material behavior during superplastic deformation.

  • Abnormal grain growth in alumina was investigated during sinter-HIP process for better understanding of pressure effect on microstructural development. Abnormal grain growth of monolithic alumina was observed near surface region rather than interior region of specimen. Finite element analysis was used to estimate the pressure distribution developed in the specimen. Pressure distribution analysis was in good agreement with grain size distributjion in the specimen. The results of finite element analysis provided that abnormal grain growth monolithic alumina was resulted from the inhomogeneous pressure distribution in the specimen. MgO addition in alumina was effective for the suppression of abnormal grain growth in alumina under inhomogeneous pressure distribution during sinter-HIP process.

  • A need exists to monitor and control the localized high temperatures often experienced in solar grain dryers, which result in grain cracking, reduced germination and loss of cooking quality. A verified finite element model would be a useful to monitor and control the drying process. This study examined the feasibility of the finite element method (FEM) to predict temperature distribution in solar grain dryers. To achieve this, an indirect solar grain dryer system was developed. It consisted of a solar collector, plenum and drying chambers, and an electric fan. The system was used to acquire the necessary input and output data for the finite element model. The input data comprised ambient and plenum chamber temperatures, prevailing wind velocities, thermal conductivities of air, grain and dryer wall, and node locations in the xy-plane. The outputs were temperature at the different nodes, and these were compared with measured values. The ${\pm}5%$ residual error interval employed in the analysis yielded an overall prediction performance level of 83.3% for temperature distribution in the dryer. Satisfactory prediction levels were also attained for the lateral (61.5-96.2%) and vertical (73.1-92.3%) directions of grain drying. These results demonstrate that it is feasible to use a two-dimensional (2-D) finite element model to predict temperature distribution in a grain solar dryer. Consequently, the method offers considerable advantage over experimental approaches as it reduces time requirements and the need for expensive measuring equipment, and it also yields relatively accurate results.

  • The aim of this study was to predict the results of superplastic forming on magnesium alloy, by considering the grain growth using numerical simulations. Superplastic behavior of AZ31 alloy was investigated through a set of uniaxial tensile tests that cover the forming temperatures ranges from 375 to $450^{\circ}C$. All the material parameters in the model, which consists of a constitutive equation and a grain growth equation, were determined. The model was used in the finite element analysis for uniaxial tensile tests and superplastic blow forming, through a user-subroutine available within ABAQUS. From this study, the effect of grain growth during forming was evaluated. The results show that it is essential to include the effect of grain growth in predicting the behavior during superplastic forming of this magnesium alloy.
