  • Transmission electron microscopy has been used to characterize the dislocation structure in hot-pressed titanium diboride. The thin foil samples were prepared by the conventional ion beam thinning technique and reveal the main features associated with the dislocations ; low-angle grain boundaries with dislocation arrays, high-angle grain boundaries with ledges/steps on the boundary planes. The ledges/steps on the grain boundaries were characterized as the origin of defect structures such as dislocation formation or crack propagation near grain boundaries. A fraction of the high angle grain boundaries contained periodic arrays of grain boundary dislocations. The Burger's vectors of the dislocations in the $TiB_{2}$specimens were determined.

  • A physical model that characterizes the field effect of the polycrystalline thin film transistor(TFT) is developed. The model discribes grains as discrete single crystal transistors and grain boundaries as insulated layers having the potential barrier, Thus TFT is considered as serial connection of single crystal transistors and insulators. In the model, the currents in the grain and the grain boundary is calculated using gradual channel approximation and tunneling theory, respetively. By comparing computed I-V characteristics with measured I-V characteristics of CdSe TFT's, potential and electric field distributions in the channel are observed and the validity of the conduction model proposed in this paper is confirmed.

  • The effects of the grain size on the magnetic properties in extra-low carbon steel after strain annealing were investigated. Two kinds of sample were prepared. One is the annealed sheet, which was annealed at $670^{\circ}C$ and $850^{\circ}C$ for various time periods after cold rolling. The other is the strain annealed sheet, which was temper rolled by 0.4% and subsequently strain annealed at the temperature ranging between $670^{\circ}C$ and $850^{\circ}C$ for various time periods. The grains after strain annealing became more coarse than those after primary annealing. The grains were coarsened due to the strain induced grain boundary migration (SIGM). It was found that the permeability tended to be increased and coercivity tended to be decreased with the increase of grain size. The optimum magnetic properties was achieved after strain annealing at $850^{\circ}C$ for 30 minites. Under this condition, the coercivity was measured to be 0.6 and the permeability was measured up to be 13000.
