  • In order to effectively control waves in a coastal zone, Multi-Cylinder Piles have been suggested as economic structures. A numerical analysis was conducted using the Delft-3D: WAVE module based on SWAN, which considered wave shoaling and refraction. Moreover, irregular waves were used to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of the wave interaction with the structure. In this paper, a numerical analysis was carried out to research the effect of wave control through a wave height analysis concerning an existing, concrete wave breaker and multi-cylinder piles placed at the same location. As a result, the effect of the wave control is shown using the wave breaker, multi-cylinder piles, and existing data.

  • The paper concerns an experimental study of fully developed laminar flow of a Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquid in concentric annuli with combined bulk axial flow and inner cylinder rotation. Pressure losses and skin friction coefficients have been measured for Newtonian fluid, water and non-Newtonian fluids, 0.2% aqueous of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and 5% bentonite solutions, when the inner cylinder rotates at the speed of $0{\sim}500$ rpm. The influences of rotation, radius ratio and working fluid on the annular flow field are investigated. And the new correlations among the skin friction coefficient, the Reynolds number and the Rossby number are presented with reasonable limits of accuracy in laminar flow regime.

  • This study concerns the characteristics of helical flow in a concentric and eccentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52 and 0.9, whose outer cylinders are stationary and inner ones are rotating. Pressure losses and skin friction coefficients have been measured for fully developed flows of water and $0.2\%$ aqueous of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC), respectively, when the inner cylinder rotates at the speed of $0\~500$ rpm. The effect of rotation on the skin friction coefficient is significantly dependent on the flow regime. In all flow regimes, the skin friction coefficient is increased by the inner cylinder rotation. This study shows the change of skin friction coefficient and wall shear stress corresponding to the variation of rotating speed of the inner cylinder, radius ratio, eccentricity, and working fluids.

  • We developed a technology that can measure the hydrogen uptake and diffusivity of rubber materials by using the volumetric analysis method and diffusivity analysis program through the measurement of the water level in the graduated cylinder. In this method, hydrogen gas is charged at a certain pressure for a certain period of time for a rubber material exposed to a high-pressure hydrogen gas environment, and then the pressure is reduced to measure the change in the water level in the graduated cylinder in real time, and based on the measured value, it is a technology that can evaluate hydrogen uptake and diffusivity using diffusivity analysis program. Using this method, the hydrogen uptake and diffusivity of the NBR material were measured with respect to the change in the type and weight ratio of the filler used to improve the physical properties of the rubber material. In addition, uncertainty analysis was performed on the diffusivity measurement method.

  • This study was based upon the survey on the name of 13 basic experimental instruments used in elementary science class: Schale, evaporating dish, mortar & pestle, beaker, erlenmeyer flask, spuit(medicine dropper), graduated cylinder, balance, spatula, dropping bottle, gas collecting bottle, funnel, alcohol burner, and their uses. To implement this study, an open-ended, written questionnaire was administered to the subjects of in-service elementary school teachers, future elementary teachers who have attended at the Gyeongin national university of education, and elementary students in Korea. The findings of this study were as follows: The rates of in-service and pre-service elementary school teachers that knew correct name of experimental instruments were not high, the elementary school student's rates were especially very low. In this study, we found several reasons which they wrote inaccurately: the name to be represented at the textbook that they had studied, the confusion of the name about a fortis pronunciation, the recognition as the vocabulary like flask and cylinder to be meaningless, the habit to say in an everyday life, wrong expression in the internet and general book. All respondents had a wide range of perceptions of uses for the experimental instruments. Their understanding of uses for evaporating dish, erlenmeyer flask, balance, gas collecting bottle were very poor. And then most of them understood that graduated cylinder, beaker, and erlenmeyer flask were tools to measure the volume of solution or liquid, so they did not exactly distinguish the difference of their uses.

  • Recently particulate matter(PM) emission regulations are becoming more strict for diesel engines. There is increasing interest for measuring not only concentration but also size of the particles. Laser-induced incandescence (LII) has emerged as a promising technique for measuring particle volume fraction and size. In this study, the Simple Time Resolved-LII method was applied to exhaust of Ethylene diffusion flame and diesel engine exhaust for measuring soot and PM size. The particle size data from LII technique were calibrated using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope(FE-SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscope(TEM) photographs. In diesel engine experiments for particle size measurement, results from LII measurement are in a good agreement with those from TEM photograph, and difference between two measurements was less than 16%.

  • In this paper, we propose the algorithm for making panoramic background and object tacking using pan-tilt-zoom camera. We draw an analogy relation between images for cylinder projection, rearrange of images, stitching, and blending. We can then make the panoramic background, and can track the object use the panoramic background. After generated the background, the proposed algorithm tracks the moving object. Therefore it can detect the wide area, and it tracks the object continuously. So the proposed algorithm is able to use at wide area to detect and track the object.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate a loosening process of screws through a fatigue test. Therefore, it is attempted to perform an interbody fusion on porsine lumbar spine using cage and screws. From the results, it is found that the combining force in both of the cylinder and the taper type screws located on the upper-left first start to decrease and then the combination between a rod and screw loosens. In addition, it is investigated that the life of taper type screw increases 5.5% and this fact is coincident with the previous results.

  • A synthetic gas reformed from hydrocarbon-based fuels consists of $H_2$, CO and $N_2$. Hydrogen contained in the synthetic gas is a very useful species in chemical processes, due to its wide flammability range and fast burning speed. The ESGI (Exhaust Synthetic Gas Injection) technology is developed to shorten the light-off time of three way catalysts through combustion of the synthetic gas in the exhaust manifold during the cold start period of SI engines. Before the ESGI technology is applied to the test engine, the authors set a test rig that consists of gas temperature and composition controllers, an exhaust pulse generator and an exhaust manifold with a visualization window, in order to optimize the point and conditions of injection of the synthetic gas. Through measuring burned gas temperatures and taking photographs of synthetic gas combustion at the outlet of the exhaust manifold, the authors tried to find the optimal injection point and conditions. Analysis of burned gas composition has been performed for various $O_2$ concentrations. As a result, when the synthetic gas is injected at the port outlet of the cylinder No. 4 and $O_2$ concentration exceeds 4%, combustion of the synthetic gas is strong and effective in the exhaust manifold.

  • This article provides a dynamic modeling methodology of engines to be accurate with a small number of degrees of freedom for an active vibration control using a top bracing. First. a finite element (FE) model for the engine structure is constructed so that the size of model is as small as possible where the dynamic characteristics of engine are ensured. Second. a technique is studied to obtain the exact mass and stiffness matrices of the FE model. The size of matrices from the FE model is still too large to apply. Finally, a model reduction is. therefore. conducted to make an appropriate dynamic model for designing and simulating a top bracing. In this article, a dynamic model of a large 9 cylinder engine is constructed and reviewed by comparing its natural frequencies and steady state reponses with those of experimental data provided by manufacturer.
