FUEL PROPERTIES AND EMISSIONS CHARACTERISTICS OF ETHANOL-DIESEL BLEND ON SMALL DIESEL ENGINE

  • Phase separation and low cetane number are the main barriers to the large-scale use of ethanol-diesel blend fuel on small diesel engines. In this paper, an additive package is designed on the basis of the blended fuel properties to overcome these limitations. The experiments show that the solubility of ethanol in diesel is evidently increased by adding $1{\sim}2%$ (in volume) of the additive package and the flammability of ethanol-diesel blend fuel with the additive has reached the neat diesel level under the cold start conditions. Effects of the ethanol content in diesel on fuel economy, combustion characteristics, and emission characteristics are also investigated with the ethanol blend ratios of 10%, 20% and 30%. The increase in ethanol content shows that the specific fuel consumption and the brake thermal efficiency are both gradually increased compared to neat diesel. The soot concentrations of the three blended fuels are all greatly lower than that of neat diesel. $NO_x$ emission is increased with an increase in the engine load and is reduced with the increase in the ethanol blend ratio under a high load.

  • Polycarbonate (PC) materials having electrical insulation properties, are thermoplastic material and are easily processed, have excellent strength and heat resistance characteristics, and also have transparent and hard characteristics. In this study, we tried to derive the ε-N curve of strain-life, which shows the relationship between the strain characteristics and the life of the material when repeated impact loads are applied to the PC plastic material. As the impact load increased to 3.0kg, 4.0kg, 5.0kg, and 6.0kg, the strain also increased linearly to 0.033, 0.041, 0.046, and 0.055. At 3.0kg of mass impact, the test piece broke with 12000 impact cycles, 8400 times at 3.5kg, 7400 times at 4.0kg, 6600 times at 4.5kg, 4700 times at 5.0kg, 3000 times at 5.5kg, and 1000 times at 6.0kg. The number of fractures exponentially decreased as the load gradually increased. Using these results, an ε-N curve for PC plastic was derived.

  • The electric facilities for subway stations require reliable and safe electricity in spite of their load increases rapidly. Nevertheless, Korea Electrical Safety Corporation reports that the accidents of independent electric facilities increased greatly from 4,632 cases in 1998 to 6,024 in 1999 and 6,776 cases in 2000, while the ratio of the accidents related with transformers grew gradually. As it is, it is deemed very important to minimize the spreading effects of the electric system accidents and thereby, enhance reliability of the electric supply as well as its safety. According to the fact that the electric facilities for subway stations are important for the public safety and conveniences, it should be careful to set their capacity instead of simply applying the general capacity standard to them, and thereby, improve their economy as well as prevent their accidents. With such a basic conception in mind, this study is aimed at analyzing the characteristics of the electric load in the subway stations and thereupon, suggesting some guidelines for setting of the electric facility capacity for subway stations in terms of optimal operation and safety.

풍화된 암반에 근입된 현장타설말뚝의 하중전이 기구 (Load Transfer Mechanism of Drilled Shafts in Weathered Rock)

  • Since the allowable bearing capacities of piles in weathered/fractured rock are mainly governed by settlement, the load-displacement behavior of the rock socketed pile should be well known. To predict pile head settlement at the design stage, the exact understanding of the load-transfer mechanisms is essential. Therefore, in this research, the load-transfer mechanisms of drilled shaft socketed into weathered rock was investigated. For that, 5 cast-in-place concrete piles with diameters of 1,000 mm were socketed into weathered gneiss. The static axial load tests and the load-transfer measurements were performed to examine the axial resistant behavior of the piles. A comprehensive field/laboratory testing program on weathered rock at the field test sites was also performed to describe the in situ rock mass conditions quantitatively. And then, the effect of rock mass condition on the load transfer mechanism was investigated. The side shear resistance of the pile in moderately weathered rock reached to yielding point at a few millimeter displacements, and after that, the rate of resistance increment dramatically decreased. However, that in the highly /completely weathered rock did not show the obvious yielding point, and gradually increased showing the hyperbolic pattern until with the relatively high displacement (>10 mm). The end bearing-displacement curves showed linear increase at least until with the base displacement of approximately 10 mm, regardless rock mass conditions.

고층건물의 내진설계에 미치는 중력하중의 영향 (Implications of the effects of gravity load for earthquake resistant design of multistory building structurtes)

  • 본 연구에서는 지진에 대한 고층건물의 응답특성, 그리고 지진응답에 미치는 중력하중의 영향과 중력하중의 영향이 내진설계에 미치는 중요성을 산정하였다. 이를 위해서 예제 구조물에 대한 정적해석 및 지진하중에 대한 동적해석을 하였다. 지진에 대한 고층건물의 지진응답 특성을 파악하기 위하여 비탄성 변형의 건물 높이에 따른 분포를 알아보았다. 지진이 발생하면 휨모멘트 요구도가 건물의 상부층보다 하부층에서 상대적으로 더 많이 증가해서 설계모멘트와의 차이가 건물의 하부층으로 갈수록 더 커진다. 그 결과 현재 쓰이는 내진설계방법에 따라 설계된 예제 건물들은 지진에 대하여 비탄성 응답이 건물의 각 층마다 서로 다르게 발생하는데 주로 건물의 하부층에서 큰 비탄성 응답이 발생한다. 또한 설계시에 고려된 중력하중 때문에 구조적 손상이 건물의 꼭대기 층에서 아래로 갈수록 크게 증가한다. 구조물의 지진응답에 관하여 중력하중은 보의 항복시간을 앞당기며, 보의 양단의 소성힌지에 각기 다른 비탄성 거동을 유발시킨다. 그러나 중력하중에 의한 초기 휨모멘트의 영향은 보가 비탄성 거동을 계속함에 따라 재분배되어 보의 양단에서 그 영향이 감소되며 비탄성 변형이 계속되면 크게 감소한다. 중력하중에 의한 초기 휨모멘트의 영향이 감소는 고층건물의 내진설계에 있어서 중력하중의 영향이 주는 의미는 기둥과 보의 휨강도를 결정할 때 현재의 방법보다 중력하중의 영향을 줄이고 지진하중의 영향을 증가시켜야 한다는 것이다.

고질소 Fe-l8Cr-l8Mn-2Mo-0.9N 강의 미끄럼 마멸 기구 (Sliding Wear Mechanism of the High-Nitrogen Austenitic 18Cr-l8Mn-2Mo-0.9N Steel)

  • Sliding wear mechanism of a high nitrogen austenitic 18Cr-18Mn-2Mo-0.9N steel has been investigated. Dry sliding wear tests of the steel were carried out at various loads of IN-10N under a constant sliding speed condition of 0.15m/s against AISI 52100 bearing steel balls. Solution ($1050^{\circ}C$) and isothermal aging ($900^{\circ}C$) heat treatments were performed on the steel and the effect of the heat treatments on the wear was investigated. Wear rates of the solution-treated steel specimen remained low until 5N load, and then increased abruptly at loads above 5N. The rates of isothermally aged specimens were low and increased gradually with the applied load. Worn surfaces, their cross sections, and wear debris of the steel specimens were examined with a scanning electron microscopy. Phases of the heat-treated specimen and the wear debris were identified using XRD. The transformed phase underneath a sliding track was investigated and analyzed using a TEM. Effects of the phase transformation during the wear and $Cr_{2}N$ precipitates formed during the isothermal aging on the wear of the austenitic steel were discussed.

토목섬유보강 성토지지말뚝시스템에서의 하중전이 효과에 관한 모형실험 (Laboratory Model Tests on the Load Transfer in Geosynthetic-Reinforced and Pile-Supported Embankment System)

  • 토목섬유보강 성토지지말뚝시스템에서의 하중전이 특성을 규명하기 위하여 일련의 모형실험을 실시하였다. 모형토조에 단독캡 말뚝을 설치하고, 토목섬유를 포설한 후 성토를 실시하였다. 연약지반 대체재료로서 스펀지고무를 사용하였다. 실험결과 성토지지말뚝시스템의 효율은 일정한 말뚝간격비에서는 성토고가 증가할수록 비선형적으로 증가하여 이후 일정한 값에 수렴하는 경향을 나타내었다. 또한 성토고가 일정한 조건에서는 말뚝간격비가 증가할수록 효율의 크기는 감소하였다. 토목섬유를 보강한 경우, 무보강시와 비교하여 말뚝으로 전이되는 하중이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 토목섬유의 보강이 연약지반의 거동을 억지하는데 효과가 있음을 나타내는 것이다. 결국 토목섬유보강 성토지지말뚝시스템에서의 하중전이 특성은 말뚝캡 설치간격, 성토고, 지반의 강도정수 및 토목섬유 강성 등에 복합적으로 영향을 받음을 알 수 있다.

  • Recently, railroad construction has been increased all over the world and as the train is getting high-speeded, there has been a need for guaranteed safety, so that a requirement for heath monitoring techniques for destruction that generated by gradually accumulated damages is now increasing. Especially the rail is crucial part that contact with wheel directly and delivers the train's load to a sleeper. It needs a technique that can guarantee a safety by sensing the possible cracks. In this paper, when train's load applied to the rail, strain distribution that introduced to entire length of rail is monitored using optical fibre. Optical fibre is used as a medium for measuring the strain and BOCDA (Brillouin Optical Correlation Domain Analysis) system is organized for measuring the distributed variation that implied to optical fibre. Optical fibre is attached at lower flange where tension is maximized when the load of train applied to the rail and strain gauge is implied together to compare the accuracy of measurement.

물체 운반작업에 의한 산소맥의 변화 (Oxygen Pulse in Load Carrying)

  • On 6 healthy adult males aged 20-30 years, oxygen pulse was observed during carrying sand bags weighing 10, 20 and 30 kg on a level treadmill running with speeds of 3, 4 and 5 km/hr. The results obtained were as follows. 1. Oxygen pulse during load carrying on a level treadmill was proportionately increased with an increase of work load, average oxygen uptake per minute. Regression equation of oxygen pulse (y: $m\iota$/beat) on the average oxygen uptake (x:$\iota$/min) required for each grade of work was expressed as y=3.34x+5.99, $s_{y.x}=0.858$). 2. Oxygen pulse reached the highest value 2-5 minutes after the start of load carrying, and thereafter it decreased gradually to some extend as the load carrying was continued. Rate of decrease in the oxygen pulse was greater in lighter works. 3. In lighter works requiring less than $2.0\iota/min$ of oxygen uptake, no difference in oxygen pulse could be seen between methods of carrying even when the same amount of load was carried. In heavier works requiring more than $2.0\iota/min$ of oxygen uptake, oxygen pulse was larger in case of carrying a load by embrace, in both hands and on head than on back or on shoulder.

기지하중을 받는 교량구조물의 현장 계측 및 해석에 따른 응력분포 연구 (Analytical and Field Investigation of Bridge Stress Distribution under Proof Load)

  • 본 연구는 기지하중을 이용하여 교량의 효율적 평가를 하기 위한 것이다. 계산상 내하력이 부족한 것으로 평가된 교량의 하중저항능력은 기존의 방법에 의한 평가능력을 상회하는 경우가 일반적이다. 기지하중을 이용한 실험은 미지의 저항능력을 평가할 수 있으며, 따라서 대상교량의 하중저항능력을 정확히 검증할 수 있다. 실험을 위한 기지하중은 일반적인 통행하중보다 큰 것을 사용하여야 한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 미시간 주에서는 법적으로 허용된 11축 트럭 하중(685kN)을 고려하여, 두 대의 군용탱크와 두 대의 11축 트럭을 이용하였으며, 실험의 안전을 위하여 재하하중의 크기를 점진적으로 증가하면서 계측을 실시하였다. 실험에 의한 대상 교량의 응력수준은 계산에 의한 값보다 다소 작게 측정되었으며, 이는 부적절한 재료강도의 예측, 파라펫이나 가드레일과 같은 비구조요소의 기여, 지지조건의 변화 등에 기인한 것으로 분석되었다.
