Piercing is the process of shearing a circular hole in sheet metal, whose high shear force makes it difficult to secure the durability of tools. In addition, uneven clearance between tools due to poor alignment of the piercing punch causes accelerated die wear and breakage of the tool. This study reviewed the feasibility of in-situ determining alignment failure during the piercing process by analyzing the signal deviation of a bolt-type piezo sensor installed inside the tool whose alignment level was controlled. Finite element analysis was performed to select the optimal sensor location on the piercing tool for sensitive detection of process signals. A well-aligned piercing process results in uniform deformation in the circumferential direction, and shearing is completed at a stroke similar to the sheet thickness. Afterward, a sharp decrease in shear load is observed. The misaligned piecing punch leads to a gradual decrease in the load after the maximum shear load. This gradual decrease is due to the progressive shear deformation that proceeds in the circumferential direction after the initial crack occurs at the narrow clearance site. Therefore, analyzing the stroke at which the maximum shear load occurs and the load reduction rate after that could detect the misalignment of the piercing punch in real-time.

Cable-stayed bridge, which is one of the representative long-spanned bridge, needs prompt maintenances when a stay cable is damaged because it may cause structural failure of the entire bridge. Many researches are being conducted to develop abnormal behavior detection algorithms for the purpose of shortening the reaction time after the occurrence of structural damage. To improve the accuracy of the damage detection algorithm, ample observation data from various kinds of damage responses is needed. However, it is difficult to measure an abnormal response by damaging an existing bridge, numerical simulation can be an effective alternative. In most previous studies, which simulate the damage responses of a cable-stayed bridge, the damages has been considered as a load variation without regard to its stiffness variation. The analyses of using these simplification could not calculate exact responses of damaged structure, though it may reserve a sufficient accuracy for the purpose of bridge design. This study suggests Gradual Bilinear Method (GBM) which simulate the damage responses of cable-stayed bridge considering the stiffness and mass variation, and develops an analysis program. The developed program is verified from the responses of a simple model. The responses of a existing cable-stayed bridge model are analyzed with respect to the fracture delay time and damage ratio. The results of this study can be used to develop and verify the highly accurate abnormal behavior detection algorithm for safety management of architecture/large structures.

An on-line monitoring system of endmill failure such as weal, chipping, and fracture is developed using AE, cutting force Characteristic variations of AE and cutting force signals due to endmill failure are identified as follows. When endmill fracture occurs, AE count rate shows a rapid Increase in conjunction with a subsequent decrease while a standard deviation of the principal cutting force Increases significantly. The increase of AE count rate precedes the Increase of standard deviation of principal cutting force. Chipping results in relatively small increase and decrease of AE count rate without any significant variation of the cutting force Gradual increase of AE count rate and mean principal cutting force are Identified to be related with the wear of cutter. A cutter fracture detection algorithm is developed based on the present results. The signals me normalized to enhance the applicability of the algorithm to Wide those of fresh cutters, and qualitative characteristics of AE signals encountered at the moment of fracture are employed. It is demonstrated that the algorithm can detect the cutter fracture successfully.
As many critics do, this article starts from the premise that Charles Waddell Chesnutt wrote The Conjure Woman with a distinct socio-ethical view to ameliorating white readers' racism. For this purpose of social activism, first, the author uses a racially submissive genre and narrator- antebellum plantation-dialect fiction and an old ex-slave Julius-in order to win the attention of white racists, who constituted the majority of the reading public of postbellum America. Chesnutt then allows this seemingly submissive ex-slave consecutively to wage narrative battles against a Northern white capitalist, John. This fiction's structure is thus based on interracial narrative conflict. Granted, the result of these narrative battles is Julius's defeat. Even though he sometimes has narrative success through his manipulation of either his white female auditor's sentimentalism or the white capitalist's racial prejudice, it does not lead to any fundamental change in the white audience members' awareness: John still regards Julius's tacitly reformoriented tales merely as nonsensical ghost stories invented by the absurd imagination of a subservient, entertaining, and exploitable black coachman. Admitting his defeat, Julius relinquishes his original goal of deterring John's capitalist exploitation of both racial Others and the natural environment of the South and finally decides to serve the economic power of white capitalism. This self-defeating conclusion, however, should not be identified with Chesnutt's failure as an author. Rather, it should be understood as an interim result of the black author's earnest experiment with literary media best suited to his reform project. In fact, this narrative failure reveals Chesnutt's accurate diagnosis of the postbellum literary world: a black voice is still feebly heard and even easily buried by the whites' capitalist ambition and consequently intensifying racism. Conclusively, Julius's narrative failure should be positively evaluated as Chesnutt's one step further in his gradual and lifelong progress to a narrative goopher effectively to engage whites' imagination and sympathy for a vision of equal interracial coexistence.
Tooth bleaching has been prevailing recently for its ability to recover the color and shape of natural teeth without reduction of tooth material. However, it has been reported that bleaching procedure adversely affects the adhesive bond strength of composite resin to tooth. At the same time the bond strength was reported to be regained by application of some chemical agents. The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of the removal of residual peroxide on the composite- enamel adhesion and also evaluated fracture mode between resin and enamel after bleaching. Sixty extracted human anterior and premolars teeth were divided into 5 groups and bleached by combined technique using of office bleaching with 35 % hydrogen peroxide and matrix bleaching with 10% carbamide peroxide for 4 weeks. After bleaching, the labial surfaces of each tooth were treated with catalase, 70% ethyl alcohol, distilled water and filled with composite resin. Shear bond strength was tested and the fractured surfaces were also examined with SEM. Analysis revealed significantly higher bond strength values. (p<0.05) for catalase-treated specimens, but water-treated specimens showed reduction of bond strength, alcohol- treated specimens had medium value between the two groups(p<0.05). The fracture mode was shown that the catalase group and the alcohol group had cohesive failure but the water sprayed group had adhesive failure. It was concluded that the peroxide residues in tooth after bleaching seems to be removed by gradual diffusion and the free radical oxygen from peroxide prevents polymerization by combining catalyst in the resin monomer. Therefore it may be possible to eliminate the adverse effect on the adhesion of composite resin to enamel after bleaching by using water displacement solution or dentin bonding agent including it for effective removal of residual peroxide.
Statement of problem: Removable partial denture and complete denture often require denture base relines to improve the fit against the tissue-bearing mucosa because of gradual changes in edentulous ridge contours and resorption of underlying bone structure. Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the effect of surface design on bond strength of relining denture base resins to denture base acrylic resin. Materials and method: Heat curing resin(Lucitone 199, Dentsply U.S.A. and Vertex, Dentimex, Holland), self curing resin(Tokuso rebase, Tokuyama, Japan), and visible light curing resin(Triad, Dentsply, U.S.A.) were used in this study. The surface designs were classified as butt, bevel and rabbet joint and the bond strengths were measured by Universial Testing Machine (Zwick 2020, Zwick Co., Germany). Results and Conclusion: The obtained results from this study were as follows ; 1. The bond strength of Vertex resin was higher than those of Tokuso rebase and Triad. 2. The bond strength of rabbet and bevel joint was higher than that of butt joint. 3. The failure mode of Triad and Tokuso rebase was mainly adhesive, but cohesive failure was shown mainly in vertex.
In the current paper the results of a numerical simulation that were verified by a well instrumented experimental procedure for studying the arching effect over a trapdoor in sand is presented. To simulate this phenomenon with continuum mechanics, the experimental procedure is modeled in ABAQUS code using stress dependent hardening in elastic state and plastic strain dependent frictional hardening-softening with Mohr Coulomb failure criterion applying user sub-routine. The apparatus comprises rectangular trapdoors with different width that can yield downward while stresses and deformations are recorded simultaneously. As the trapdoor starts to yield, the whole soil mass deforms elastically. However, after an immediate specified displacement, depending on the width of the trapdoor, the soil mass behaves plastically. This behavior of sand occurs due to the flow phenomenon and continues until the stress on trapdoor is minimized. Then the failure process develops in sand and the measured stress on the trapdoor shows an ascending trend. This indicates gradual separation of the yielding mass from the whole soil body. Finally, the flow process leads to establish a stable vault of sand called arching mechanism or progressive collapse of the soil body.
To date, many studies have been conducted for the analysis and design of reinforced concrete members with disturbed regions. However, prestressed concrete deep beams have not been the subject of many investigations. This paper presents an evaluation of the behavior and strength of three pre-tensioned concrete deep beams failed by shear and bond slip of prestressing strands using a nonlinear strut-tie model approach. In this approach, effective prestressing forces represented by equivalent external loads are gradually introduced along strand's transfer length in the nearest strut-tie model joints, the friction at the interface of main diagonal shear cracks is modeled by the aggregate interlock struts along the direction of the cracks in strut-tie model, and an algorithm considering the effect of bond slip of prestressing strands in the strut-tie model analysis and design of pre-tensioned concrete members is implemented. Through the strut-tie model analysis of pre-tensioned concrete deep beams, the nonlinear strut-tie model approach proved to present effective solutions for predicting the essential aspects of the behavior and strength of pre-tensioned concrete deep beams. The nonlinear strut-tie model approach is capable of predicting the strength and failure modes of pre-tensioned concrete deep beams including the anchorage failure of prestressing strands and, accordingly, can be employed in the practical and precise design of pre-tensioned concrete deep beams.

This study suggests the tangent modulus $E_t$ associated with partially yielded section of steel member under axially compressed. The provisions for column strength does not provide a information about failure mode of structural system. So, designers can not evaluate that a failure comes from member buckling or material yielding. The material of the axially compressed column under inelastic behavior reaches yielding point before the axial force renders the column bent. If axial members yields not by buckling effect but gradually yielding effect of material, the design code should accept related tangent modulus Et which is based on gradual yielding effect of material. This study provides the new effective tangent modulus $E_t$ derived in the case that residual stress is 30 percent and 50 percent of yielding stress respectively. The study considers idealized I section of steel which ignores web and general I section of steel with web respectively and makes conclude that tangent modulus $E_t$ with idealized I section of steel is rational.

During the hot forging process, the most common cause of tool failure is wear. Tool wear results in the gradual loss of part tolerances, after which eventually the tool must be replaced or repaired. In order to maximize the lifetimes of forging tools, it is important to investigate the wear mechanisms of these tools. In this study, the hot forging of the outer race of an automotive constant-velocity joint was analyzed by a finite element method to investigate the wear distribution, especially the amount and location of the maximum expected wear damage, using Archard's wear model, which was modified considering the forging temperature. Forging analyses were carried out after modifying blocker forging tools based on established versions. The modified blocker tools resulted in an increase in the tool life up to 31% with a finisher punch.
