  • In this paper, we propose an automatic cosmetic foundation recommendation system that suggests a good foundation product based on the user's skin color. The proposed system receives and preprocesses user images and detects skin color with OpenCV and machine learning algorithms. The system then compares the performance of the training model using XGBoost, Gradient Boost, Random Forest, and Adaptive Boost (AdaBoost), based on 550 datasets collected as essential bestsellers in the United States. Based on the comparison results, this paper implements a recommendation system using the highest performing machine learning model. As a result of the experiment, our system can effectively recommend a suitable skin color foundation. Thus, our system model is 98% accurate. Furthermore, our system can reduce the selection trials of foundations against the user's skin color. It can also save time in selecting foundations.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient agricultural products price prediction model based on dataset which provided in DACON. This model is XGBoost and CatBoost, and as an algorithm of the Gradient Boosting series, the average accuracy and execution time are superior to the existing Logistic Regression and Random Forest. Based on these advantages, we design a machine learning model that predicts prices 1 week, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks from the previous prices of agricultural products. The XGBoost model can derive the best performance by adjusting hyperparameters using the XGBoost Regressor library, which is a regression model. The implemented model is verified using the API provided by DACON, and performance evaluation is performed for each model. Because XGBoost conducts its own overfitting regulation, it derives excellent performance despite a small dataset, but it was found that the performance was lower than LGBM in terms of temporal performance such as learning time and prediction time.

  • Rectangular concrete-filled steel tubular (RCFST) column, a type of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST), is widely used in compression members of structures because of its advantages. This paper proposes a robust machine learning-based framework for predicting the ultimate compressive strength of RCFST columns under both concentric and eccentric loading. The gradient boosting neural network (GBNN), an efficient and up-to-date ML algorithm, is utilized for developing a predictive model in the proposed framework. A total of 890 experimental data of RCFST columns, which is categorized into two datasets of concentric and eccentric compression, is carefully collected to serve as training and testing purposes. The accuracy of the proposed model is demonstrated by comparing its performance with seven state-of-the-art machine learning methods including decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), support vector machines (SVM), deep learning (DL), adaptive boosting (AdaBoost), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and categorical gradient boosting (CatBoost). Four available design codes, including the European (EC4), American concrete institute (ACI), American institute of steel construction (AISC), and Australian/New Zealand (AS/NZS) are refereed in another comparison. The results demonstrate that the proposed GBNN method is a robust and powerful approach to obtain the ultimate strength of RCFST columns.

  • For the improvement of license plate recognition system, correct extraction of a license plate region as well as character recognition is important. In this paper, with the analysis and classification of the error patterns in the process of plate region extraction, we tried to improve the extraction of the region using HoG(histogram of gradient) features and Adaboost. The results show that the HoG feature is robust to the noise and various types of the plates, and also is very effective to extract the region failed before.

  • In this paper, we describe a study of a vehicle detection method based on a Boosting Classifier which uses Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG) features and Image Segmentation techniques. An input image is segmented by means of a split and merge algorithm. Then, the two largest segmented regions are removed in order to reduce the search region and speed up processing time. The HOG features are then calculated for each pixel in the search region. In order to detect the vehicle region we used the AdaBoost (adaptive boost) method, which is well known for classifying samples with two classes. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, 537 training images were used to train and learn the classifier, followed by 500 non-training images to provide the recognition rate. From these experiments we were able to detect the proper image 98.34% of the time for the 500 non-training images. In conclusion, the proposed method can be used for detecting the location of a vehicle in an intelligent vehicle control system.

  • Seoul introduced the shared bicycle system, "Seoul Public Bike" in 2015 to help reduce traffic volume and air pollution. Hence, to solve various problems according to the supply and demand of the shared bicycle system, "Seoul Public Bike," several studies are being conducted. Most of the research is a strategic "Bicycle Rearrangement" in regard to the imbalance between supply and demand. Moreover, most of these studies predict demand by grouping features such as weather or season. In previous studies, demand was predicted by time-series-analysis. However, recently, studies that predict demand using deep learning or machine learning are emerging. In this paper, we can show that demand prediction can be made a little better by discovering new features or ordering the importance of various features based on well-known feature-patterns. In this study, by ordering the selection of new features or the importance of the features, a better coefficient of determination can be obtained even if the well-known deep learning or machine learning or time-series-analysis is exploited as it is. Therefore, we could be a better one for demand prediction.

  • This paper proposes the GMOPTBoost algorithm to improve the performance of the AdaBoost algorithm for bankruptcy prediction in which class imbalance problem is inherent. AdaBoost algorithm has the advantage of providing a robust learning opportunity for misclassified samples. However, there is a limitation in addressing class imbalance problem because the concept of arithmetic mean accuracy is embedded in AdaBoost algorithm. GMOPTBoost can optimize the geometric mean accuracy and effectively solve the category imbalance problem by applying Gaussian gradient descent. The samples are constructed according to the following two phases. First, five class imbalance datasets are constructed to verify the effect of the class imbalance problem on the performance of the prediction model and the performance improvement effect of GMOPTBoost. Second, class balanced data are constituted through data sampling techniques to verify the performance improvement effect of GMOPTBoost. The main results of 30 times of cross-validation analyzes are as follows. First, the class imbalance problem degrades the performance of ensembles. Second, GMOPTBoost contributes to performance improvements of AdaBoost ensembles trained on imbalanced datasets. Third, Data sampling techniques have a positive impact on performance improvement. Finally, GMOPTBoost contributes to significant performance improvement of AdaBoost ensembles trained on balanced datasets.

  • Predicting earthquake occurrences accurately is challenging, and preparing all buildings with seismic design for such random events is a difficult task. Analyzing building features to predict potential damage and reinforcing vulnerabilities based on this analysis can minimize damages even in buildings without seismic design. Therefore, research analyzing the efficiency of building damage prediction models is essential. In this paper, we compare the accuracy of earthquake damage prediction models using machine learning classification algorithms, including Random Forest, Extreme Gradient Boosting, LightGBM, and CatBoost, utilizing data from buildings damaged during the 2015 Nepal earthquake.

  • Forest vertical structure is vital for comprehending ecosystems and biodiversity, in addition to fundamental forest information. Currently, the forest vertical structure is predominantly assessed via an in-situ method, which is not only difficult to apply to inaccessible locations or large areas but also costly and requires substantial human resources. Therefore, mapping systems based on remote sensing data have been actively explored. Recently, research on analyzing and classifying images using machine learning techniques has been actively conducted and applied to map the vertical structure of forests accurately. In this study, Sentinel-2 and digital surface model images were obtained on two different dates separated by approximately one month, and the spectral index and tree height maps were generated separately. Furthermore, according to the acquisition time, the input data were separated into cases 1 and 2, which were then combined to generate case 3. Using these data, forest vetical structure mapping models based on random forest, support vector machine, and extreme gradient boost(XGBoost)were generated. Consequently, nine models were generated, with the XGBoost model in Case 3 performing the best, with an average precision of 0.99 and an F1 score of 0.91. We confirmed that generating a forest vertical structure mapping model utilizing bi-seasonal data and an appropriate model can result in an accuracy of 90% or higher.

  • The estimation of block erection work time at a dock is one of the important factors when establishing or managing the total shipbuilding schedule. In order to predict the work time, it is a natural approach that the existing block erection data would be used to solve the problem. Generally the work time per unit is the product of coefficient value, quantity, and product value. Previously, the work time per unit is determined statistically by unit load data. However, we estimate the work time per unit through work time coefficient value from series ships using machine learning. In machine learning, the outcome depends mainly on how the training data is organized. Therefore, in this study, we use 'Feature Engineering' to determine which one should be used as features, and to check their influence on the result. In order to get the coefficient value of each block, we try to solve this problem through the Ensemble learning methods which is actively used nowadays. Among the many techniques of Ensemble learning, the final model is constructed by Stacking Ensemble techniques, consisting of the existing Ensemble models (Decision Tree, Random Forest, Gradient Boost, Square Loss Gradient Boost, XG Boost), and the accuracy is maximized by selecting three candidates among all models. Finally, the results of this study are verified by the predicted total work time for one ship among the same series.
