Microfluidic immunoassay using superparamagnetic nanoparticles in an enhanced magnetic field gradient (강화된 자기장 구배 하에서 나노자성입자를 이용한 미세유체 기반의 면역 측정)

  • This paper reports a novel immunoassay method using superparamagnetic nanoparticles and an enhanced magnetic field gradient for the detection of protein in a microfluidic device. We use superparamagnetic nanoparticles as a label and fluorescent polystyrene beads as a solid support. Based on this platform, magnetic force-based microfluidic immunoassay is successfully applied to analyze the concentration of IgG as model analytes. In addition, we present ferromagnetic microstructure connected with a permanent magnet to increase magnetic flux density gradient (dB/dx, ${\sim}10^{4}$ T/m), which makes limit of detection reduced. The detection limit is reduced to about 1 pg/mL.

  • We are concerned with an optimal control problem governed by a Poisson equation in which body force acts like a control parameter. The cost functional to be optimized is taken to represent the error from the desired observation and the cost due to the control. We recast the problem into the mixed formulation to take advantage of the minimax principle for the duality method. The existence of a saddle point for the Lagrangian shall be shown and the optimality system will be derived therein. Finally, to attain an optimal control, we combine the optimality system with an operational technique. By achieving the gradient of the cost functional, a convergent algorithm based on the projected gradient method is established.

  • This paper presents a multi-robot path planner for environment exploration and monitoring. Robotics systems are being widely used as data measurement tools, especially in dangerous environment. For large scale environment monitoring, multiple robots are required in order to save time. The path planner should not only consider the collision avoidance but efficient coordination of robots for optimal measurements. Nonlinear spring force based planning algorithm is integrated with the spatial gradient following path planner. Perturbation/Correlation based estimation of spatial gradient is applied. An algorithm of tuning the stiffness for robot coordination is presented. The performance of the proposed algorithm is discussed with simulation results.

Effects of Surface Depression on Pool Convection and Oscillation in GTAW (GTA 용접에서 용융풀의 표면 변형이 유동과 진동에 미치는 영향)

  • Surface depression in the arc welding is calculated numerically to analyze its influence on pool convection and oscillation. The magnitude of surface depression due to arc pressure on the stationary GTA pool surface is relatively small, and fluctuations of the surface and velocity are caused mainly by arc pressure. The inward flow on the surface due to the electromagnetic force and positive surface tension gradient acts to decrease surface depression. Surface depression appears to have minor effects on average flow velocity and thus pool geometry. Pool oscillation occurs due to surface vibration, and oscillation frequencies are affected mainly by the surface tension and pool width. The input parameters such as arc pressure and current have negligible effects on the oscillation frequency, and the surface tension gradient has limited effects. Since the oscillation frequency varies slightly according to penetration, pool oscillation for the partial penetration weld pool is applicable to monitor the pool width.

Reduction of Skin Friction Force for Turbulent Boundary Layer (난류 경계층의 표면 마찰력 감소화)

  • This paper presents a new concept to reduce turbulent frictional drag by injecting micro-bubble into buffer layer of turbulent boundary layer on flat plate. The buffer layer of boundary was specified by minus velocity gradient of law of the wall. When the buffer layer region of turbulent boundary layer is filled with micro-bubble of air and viscous of the region is kept low, the velocity profile in the region should be changed substantially. Then the Reynolds stress in the buffer layer region becomes less, which guide to higher velocity gradient there. It results in reduction of velocity gradient at the viscous sublayer, which gives the reduction of shear stress at the wall.

Size-dependent plastic buckling behavior of micro-beam structures by using conventional mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity

  • Since the actuators with small- scale structures may be exposed to external reciprocal actions lead to create undesirable loads causing instability, the buckling behaviors of them are interested to make reliable or accurate actions. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze plastic buckling behavior of the micro beam structures by adopting a Conventional Mechanism-based Strain Gradient plasticity (CMSG) theory. The effect of length scale on critical force is considered for three types of boundary conditions, i.e. the simply supported, cantilever and clamped - simply supported micro beams. For each case, the stability equations of the buckling are calculated to obtain related critical forces. The constitutive equation involves work hardening phenomenon through defining an index of multiple plastic hardening exponent. In addition, the Euler-Bernoulli hypothesis is used for kinematic of deflection. Corresponding to each length scale and index of the plastic work hardening, the critical forces are determined to compare them together.

  • Optical tweezers는 광압(radiation pressure)을 사용하여 입자들을 포획하거나 조절할 수 있다는 점에서 마이크로스케일의 유전체구뿐만 아니라 세포에서도 널리 사용되고 있다. 일반적으로 빛이라는 것은 광자들의 집합체로서 광자의 입자성으로 인하여 외부의 물체와 충돌시 운동량을 전달하게 되고 이것을 광압(radiation pressure)이라고 하며 optical tweezers [1]는 이 광압을 이용한 방법중 하나이다. 레이저빔을 입자에 집속 시켜 주게 되면 입자는 광압에 의해서 gradient force와 scattering force의 힘을 받게 된다.   • A numerical study on the use of the momentum interpolation mettled for flows with a large body force is presented. The inherent problems of the momentum interpolation method are discussed first. Numerical experiments are performed for a typical flow involving a large body force. The tact that the momentum interpolation method may result in physically unrealistic solutions is demonstrated. Numerical experiments changing the numerical grid have shown that a simple way of removing the physically unrealistic solution is a proper grid refinement where there is a large pressure gradient. An effective way of specifying the pressure and pressure correction at the boundary by a local mass conservation near the boundary is proposed, and it is shown that this method can effectively remove the inherent problem of the specification of pressure and pressure correction at the boundary when one uses the momentum interpolation method.

  • Numerical solutions of Stokes flow through periodic arrays of cylinders were sought using Darcy's law and homogenization theory. Drag and lift forces of each cylinder were computed for various attack angles and pitch-to-diameter ratios. It was found that drag force decreased as principal pressure gradient direction deviated from array direction and that drag force increased exponentially as pitch-to-diameter ratio approached unity. Similar tendency was found in lift force except that lift force increased and then decreased in quadratic manner as attack angle varied.
