잣나무와 일본잎갈나무 상체상(床替床)에 있어서 잡초방제(雜草防除)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (Studies on Weed Control in Transplanted Bed of Pinus koraiensis S. et. Z and Larix leptolepis Gordon)

  • 잣나무(Pinus koraiensis S. et. Z.)와 일본잎갈나무(Larix leptolepis Gordon) 상체상(床替床)에 있어서 잡초방제(雜草防除)를 목적(目的)으로 6종(種)의 제초제(除草劑)를 묘이식(苗移植) 7일(日) 후에 토양처리(土壤處理)하여 제초효과(除草效果) 및 수목(樹木)의 약해(藥害)를 검정하였고 토양표면처리시(土壤表面處理時) 비산(飛散), 부주의(不注意) 등으로 야기될 수 있는 약해유무(藥害有無)를 판정하기 위하여 수목(樹木)에 대한 경엽처리(莖葉處理)를 약해(藥害) 및 생육상황(生育狀況)을 조사(調査)한 결과(結果) 다음과 같다. 1. 공시약제(供試藥劑)의 토양표면처리(土壤表面處理) 결과(結果) 표준시용량(標準施用量)에서 화본과(和本科) 잡초(雜草)에 대한 살초효과(殺草效果)는 oxyfluorfen, alachlor, terbutryn은 85~90%의 방제율(防除率)로 우수(優秀)하였고 pendimethalin과 simazine은 78%내외(內外)의 방제율(防除率)이였으며 ustinex는 60%정도(程度)의 방제율(防除率)을 나타냈다. 2. 광엽잡초(廣葉雜草)에 대한 살초효과(殺草效果)는 simazine, oxyfluorfen, pendimethalin, terbutryu 순(順)으로 70~80%의 방제율(防除率)을 나타냈다. 3. 다년생(多年生) 잡초(雜草)인 쑥, 메꽃에 대해서의 살초효과(殺草效果)는 ustinex와 oxyfluorfen이 85% 이상(以上)의 우수(優秀)한 방제율(防除率)을 나타냈고 기타 공시약제(供試藥劑)는 50% 이하(以下)의 저조한 방제율(防除率)을 나타냈다. 4. 토양표면처리(土壤表面處理) 결과(結果) 잣나무와 일본잎갈나무에 대한 초기약해(初期藥害)는 나타나지 않았으며 생육현황(生育現況)도 관행구(慣行區)에 비하여 떨어지지 않았다. 5. 경엽처리(莖葉處理)는 없었으며 생육(生育)은 관행구(慣行區)에 비하여 뒤지지 않았으며 일본잎갈나무에 대한 초기약해(初期藥害)는 ustinex, oxyfluorfen, terbutryn, pendimethalin처리구(處理區)의 순(順)으로 크게 나타나고 있었으며 생육현황(生育現況)도 약해정도(藥害程度)에 비례하여 상당히 저조하였다.

Geographic Information System Based Floral and Faunal Assessment of Alapang Communal Forest of Benguet, Philippines

  • This study was conducted to assess the existing flora and fauna, and to develop a spatial map of Alapang communal forest located in the province of Benguet, Philippines. A total of 52 species belonging to 27 families were identified during the inventory in this communal forest using the quadrat method while a total of 30 species belonging to 18 families were recorded using line intercept technique for the assessment of grasses, herbs, vines and other low-lying vegetation. The diversity index of the species in Alapang communal forests using the quadrat method was 2.6649 while for the line intercept technique it was 2.5446. The most dominant species in this area was found to be Pinus kesiya Royle ex Gordon (Benguet pine) under Family Pinaceae with an importance value of 106.74%. In the faunal assessment, four species of birds and a small mammal particularly a rodent were identified during the study. Aside from the high species diversity of this communal forest, the presence of endemic and indicator species in the area denotes that this forest was still in good condition hence must be protected. Spatial maps and database system were generated based from data gathered in the field using Geographic Information System (GIS).

Re-induction of Embryogenic Tissue from the Cryopreserved Somatic Embryo in Japanese Larch (Larix leptolepis Gordon)

  • The study aimed to develop a cryopreservation method for long-term storage using mature somatic embryo of Japanese larch. In this study, desiccation treatments significantly affected re-induction rates of embryogenic tissue (ET) from dried somatic embryos. In the effect of different dehydration temperature and duration on the re-initiation ET. the highest frequency was shown when somatic embryos were dehydrated at $25^{\circ}C$ for 2 (45.5%) or 1 day (43.3%), respectively. In addition, low temperatures [$4^{\circ}C$, 2 days (44.2%) or 3 days (43.5%)] were marked higher ET initiation. After that, the initiation value was declined with dehydration duration. For comparison of different relative humidity on re-induction frequency of ET, the best re-induction (43.5%) was obtained from somatic embryos pre-dried at $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ (RH 79%). Both $Na_2HPO_4$ (RH 97%) and $Na_2CO_3$ (RH 88%) treatments were showed the similar rate, 34.6, 34.2%, respectively. However the lowest rate (19.6%) was observed in distilled water (RH 100%). In comparison of the various storage temperatures and duration of the dried somatic embryos, the highest frequency (66.9%) of re-initiation was obtained when somatic embryos were cryopreserved for one day. However, the frequency was gradually decreased as the time length of storage increased regardless of types of storage. None of ET re-initiated when stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 1, 2 and 84 days.

Penetrating behavior of target prawns (Sicyonia penicillata) contacting netting panels in an experimental water tunnel

  • Capture efficiencies of commercial shrimp trawls may improve if their designs took into better account behavioral responses of wild shrimp to approaching cod-end of the trawls. Here we report results of water tunnel-based experimental studies of responses of wild California target prawns to several different near-realistic netting configurations over a range of water velocities (0.3-0.7 m/s). Netting panels were oriented at parallel to water flows (FP) on the bottom of test section, vertical (VT) or diagonal sloping backward (DG), bottom to top. Behavioral responses were recorded by video camera and analyzed frame by frame. Measured responses included rates of penetrating through netting by behavioral features and tail-flip frequencies. Frequencies of prawn passing through the nets increased with flow speed for both orientations and were higher at given speeds for sloped nets. Other behavioral features (e.g., passage head-or tail-first) also varied significantly with water velocities and netting orientation. Interactions of penetrating rates between netting orientations and flow speeds also were significantly dependent, except for prawn size. Additional studies are needed of other shrimp species and at higher water velocities more similar to actual field operations using trawls to improve size selectivity.

CORRELATION BETWEEN RAT, DOG AND HAMAN SMALL INTESTINAL PERMEABILITIES OF RANITIDINE

  • While ranitidine is well known to be absorbed rapidly, the underlying cause of variable bioavailability in intra- and inter-subjects has not been clarified yet. Intestinal permeability is a key controlling factor for oral absorption of highly soluble drugs, In the present study, intestinal ferfusions have been conducted to determine the intestinal permeabilities(Peffs) of ranitidine in the rats, dogs and humans and compared to the estimated fractions of dose absorbed (FAs) in humans. A new in vivo methodology, using a regional segmental perfusion technique, has been used in the dogs and humans. In situ single-pass perfusion experiments have been performed in the rats. In the dog and human studies, perfusion experiments have been conducted on two periods to determine the intrasubject variability, There was low significant intrasubject variation as compared to intersubject variation. The Peffs of ranitidine were 33%, 51%, and 45% inthe rats, dogs and humans, respectively. The FAs were approximately the same for all three species models, suggesting rats and dogs are good animal models for estimating the oral absorption of ranitidine in humans. In addition, the estimated extent of absorption of this drug is consistent with the average bioavailability, indicating that ranitidine has permeability-limited absorption characteristics. Development and Psychometric Evaluation of the Resuscitation Self-efficacy Scale for Nurses

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate psychometric properties of the instrument, Resuscitation Self-Efficacy Scale for nurses. Methods: This was a methodological study for instrument development and psychometric testing. The initial item pool derived from literature review and experts resulted in 30 items linked to resuscitation self-efficacy. A convenience sample of 509 Korean nurses from eleven academic teaching hospitals participated in a survey to examine psychometric properties of the scale. To examine construct validity, exploratory factor analysis and known-group comparison were used. Cronbach's coefficient alpha was used to determine the scale's internal consistency reliability. Results: The final scale included 17 items with four-component structure termed 'Recognition', 'Debriefing and recording', 'Responding and rescuing', and 'Reporting'. These four factors accounted for 57.5% of the variance. Each subscale and the total scale demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency: .82; .88; .87; .83; and .91 respectively. Experienced nurses reported significantly higher self-efficacy mean scores in both total and subscales compared to new graduate nurses. Conclusion: The Resuscitation Self-Efficacy Scale for nurses yields reliable and valid results in appraising the level of resuscitation self-efficacy for Korean nurses. Further study is needed to test and refine the scale.

Pseudolaric Acid B Induces Apoptosis Through p53 and Bax/Bcl-2 Pathways in Human Melanoma A375-S2 Cells

  • Pseudolaric acid B is a major compound found in the bark of Pseudolarix kaempferi Gordon. In our study, pseudolaric acid B inhibited growth of human melanoma cells, A375-S2 in a time and dose-dependent manner. A375-S2 cells treated with pseudolaric acid B showed typical characteristics of apoptosis including morphologic changes, DNA fragmentation, sub-diploid peak in flow cytometry, cleavage of poly-ADP ribose polymerase (PARP) and degradation of inhibitor of caspase-activated DNase (ICAD). P53 protein expression was upregulated while cells were arrested at the $G_2/M$ phase of the cell cycle. There was a decrease in the expression of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL proteins, whereas pro-apoptotic Bax was increased. The two classical caspase substrates, PARP and ICAD, were both decreased in a time-dependent manner, indicating the activation of downstream caspases.

Gold Recovery Using Inherently Conducting Polymer Coated Textiles

  • The ability of inherently conducting polymer (ICP) coated textiles to recover gold metal from aqueous solutions containing $[AuCl_4]^-$ was investigated. Nylon-lycra, nylon, acrylic, polyester and cotton were coated with a layer of polypyrrole (PPy) doped with 1,5-naphthalenedisulfonic acid (NDSA), 2-anthraquinonesulfonic acid (AQSA) or p-toluenesulfonic acid (pTS). Textiles coated with polyaniline (PAn) doped with chloride were also used. The highest gold capacity was displayed by PPy/NDSA/nylon-lycra, which exhibited a capacity of 115 mgAu/g coated textile, or 9700 mgAu/g polymer. Varying the underlying textile substrate or the ICP coating had a major effect on the gold capacity of the composites. Several ICP coated textiles recovered more than 90 % of the gold initially present in solutions containing 10 ppm $[AuCl_4]^-$ and 0.1 M HCl in less than 1 min. Both PPy/NDSA/nylon-lycra and PAn/Cl/nylon-lycra recovered approximately 60 % of the gold and none of the iron present in a solution containing 1 ppm $[AuCl_4]^-$, 1000 ppm $Fe^{3+}$ and 0.1 M HCl. The spontaneous and sustained recovery of gold metal from aqueous solutions containing $[AuCl_4]^-$ using ICP coated textiles has good prospects as a potential future technology.

Clinicopathologic Characteristics of Breast Cancer in Jamaica

  • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Jamaican women. This study assessed the clinicopathologic features of cases in a hospital-based specialist clinic in Kingston, Jamaica. A retrospective chart review was performed for the 2-year study period and relevant clinical and surgico-pathologic data were recorded and analyzed. Median age of the 121 breast cancer patients was 52 years (range 22-84, IQR 20) and there was 1 case of male breast cancer. Most patients (65%) were referred from the surgical service after definitive breast cancer surgery, 20% were referred for pre-operative systemic therapy, and 15% had a diagnosis of metastatic disease. The surgico-pathologic group comprised 78 women who were referred for adjuvant therapy. The majority had presented with a palpable breast lump (91%), with median tumour size 3.5cm (range 0.4-13, IQR 4). Most tumours were node positive (56%). Approximately one-third of patients had stage III disease (33%). Most women presented with large palpable tumours and had lymph node involvement confirmed on surgicopathological evaluation, indicative of limited early breast cancer detection. A national screening mammography programme is recommended for detection of earlier lesions. Pre-operative systemic therapy should be considered as an option for eligible patients.

말기암환자의 가정간호 사정도구 개발 (The Development of a Homecare Nursing Assessment Tool for Terminal Cancer Patients)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop a homecare nursing assessment tool for terminal cancer patients, testing the validity and reliability of the tool. Methods: This was a methodological study. The tool was developed in four stages: first, preliminary items were developed based on Gordon' functional health pattern model; second, a panel of specialists reduced the number of preliminary items using validity tests for content; third, final items were selected from the results of a pre-test. Finally, from August 4th, 2011 to August 26th, 2011, reliability and validity were tested using a sample of 125 terminal cancer patients in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Results: The final tool consisted of 39 items, with Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ 0.70. Using factor analysis, 10 factors were extracted; the correlation coefficient of these was over 0.3. Conclusion: The tool developed in this study was identified as having a high degree of reliability and validity. Given this, the tool can be effectively utilized for implementing and improving home care for patients with terminal cancer.
