  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the muscle activations between the professional golfers without low back pain symptom and the professional golfers with low back pain symptom, and so identify the stress related to golf swings, and provide the basic data to minimize the low back pain and the injury risk. Using surface electrode electromyography, we evaluated muscle activity in 6 male professional golfers during the golf drive swing. Surface electrodes were used to record the level of muscle activity in the Abdominal Oblique, Elector Spinae, Rectus Abdominis, Gluteus Maximus muscles during the golfer's swing. These signals were compared with %RVC(Reference voluntary contraction) which was normalized by IEMG(Integrated EMG). The golf swing was divided into five phases: take away, forward swing, acceleration, early follow through, late follow through. we observed patterns of trunk muscle activity throughout five phases of the golf swing. The results can be summarized as follows: RES(Right Elector Spinae) had statistically significant difference in take away phase, LGM(Left Gluteus Maximus), LRA(Left Rectus Abdominis), LOA(Left Oblique Abdominal) had statistically significant difference in forward swing phase, RES(Right Elector Spinae), RGM(Right Gluteus Maximus), ROA(Right Oblique Abdominal) had statistically significant difference in acceleration phase, RES(Right Elector Spinae), RGM(Right Gluteus Maximus) had statistically significant difference in early follow-through phase, LES(Left Elector Spinae), RGM(Right Gluteus Maximus) had statistically significant difference in late follow through phase.

  • Functional inner-wear being currently sold is being made without regard to the characteristics of various sports events. The purpose of this study is to identify this problem and to investigate the effect of sports taping on golf swing when wearing functional inner-wear. The subjects of this study were 8 male golfers belonging to Korea Professional Golf Association, and Launch monitor and Trackman were used to find out golf club action, ball pitch, distance, etc. There are three types of clubs: driver, wood, and iron, and the first experiment was carried out using only functional inner-wear. In the second experiment, we experimented with functional inner-wear after sports taping, and we compared and analyzed the distance depending on each experiment, the speed of the ball and the club, and the accuracy of the club face. The results of the study were as follows. As a result of driving distance, according to the presence of sports taping on functional inner-wear, there was a statistically significant difference in the driving swing and wood swing, for club and ball speed, there was a statistically significant difference only in the driving swing. Regarding the accuracy by the presence of sports taping on inner-wear, there was a statistically significant difference in the driving swing, wood swing, and iron swing. In conclusion, the sports taping in the functional inner-wear had a positive effect on golf performance improvement, and we hope that golf inner-wear these two specifications combing will be developed in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the characteristics of ground reaction force(GRF) in golf swing for various slopes of flat lie and uphill lies of 5 and 10 degrees. Five right-handed professional golfers were selected for the experiment and the 7 iron club was used. We used four forceplates to measure GRF and synchronized with the three-dimensional motion analysis system. Results showed that slope did not affect the total time for golf swing, but the time until the impact had a tendency to slightly increase for the uphill lie(p<0.05). The medial-lateral GRF of the right foot increased toward the medial direction during back swing, but less increases were found with the angle of uphill lie(p<0.05). The GRF of the left foot increased rapidly toward the medial direction at the uncocking and the impact during down swing, but decreased with the increase in the angle of uphill lie(p<0.05). The anterior-posterior GRF of both feet showed almost the same for different slopes. With the slopes, the vertical GRF of the right foot increased, but the vertical GRF of left foot decreased(p<0.05). Uphill lies would have negative effect to provide the angular momentum during back swing, restricting pelvic and trunk rotations, and to provide the precise timing and strong power during down swing, limiting movements of body's center of mass. The present study could provide valuable information to quantitatively analyze the dynamics of golf swing. Further study would be required to understand detailed mechanism in golf swing under different conditions.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the pattern of muscle usage during swing motion with a soft golf club in comparison with that with a normal golf club. The subjects were normal healthy young adults. The subjects performed swing motion using normal and soft golf clubs in turn. Then, we compared and analyzed the muscular activities for the two cases. The muscular activities of the subject was measured using MP100(BIOPAC Systems, Inc.). For the analysis of muscular activities, we measured EMG(Electromyography) of the subjects during swing motion. The muscles analyzed were deltoid, latissimus dorsi, external oblique, and rectus abdominis of the upper limbs and rectus femoris, biceps femoris, gastrocnemius, and soleus of the lower limbs. The result of the experiment showed that the pattern of muscle usage with soft golf club was similar to that with a normal golf club but the muscular activities with the soft golf was smaller than that with the normal golf club.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess knee joint loading in the target knee during a golf swing compared to loading rates of high impact activities such as cutting and drop landings. Nine healthy competitive golfers completed golf swings with the target foot both straight and externally rotated 30 degrees, as well as drop landings and cutting maneuvers. Motion capture data was collected at 240 Hz and ground reaction force data was collected at 2400 Hz. The frontal and transverse knee moments were examined using repeated measures ANOVA through SPSS. The abduction moments were higher in golf swings as compared to the other high impact activities (p=.010), while the external rotation moments were lower (p=.003). There were no significant differences between externally rotated and neutral golf swings. These results suggest moments applied to the knee during a golf swing are similar to those applied during a high impact activity.

  • This paper deals with a novel autocalibration method of three-axis micromachined accelerometers applied to a new golf swing diagnosis equipment for golfers. This diagnosis equipment can help golfers monitor and anlalyze their swing posture and therefore modify their swing action to get better score and enjoy their lives through golf. The micromachined accelerometers to get information of the motion are the essential part of the putting club to measure the three-axis acceleration as accurately as possible. This paper presents an efficient autocalibration algorithm to find the offset and sensitivity of accelerometers by only using the static measurement data at six different positions. The experimetnal results on the developed putters show the validity of the proposed algorithm for the new smart putter.
