  • Sedimentation tanks are essential structures to filter the suspended sediments in the inlet flow which are constructed at the inlet of the basins forked from rivers and irrigation canals. The larger the constructed tank, the better the sedimentation process is conducted. However, the construction and dredging costs increase. In this regard, improving the performance and sedimentation efficiency seem necessary by alternative methods. One of these effective methods is using baffle plates. Most of the studies carried out in this field are on the use of these baffles in the primary and secondary sedimentation tanks. Hence, this study is carrier out with the objective of increasing the retention efficiency in the irrigation sedimentation tanks using baffles. To reach this goal, the experiments were carried out in a flume with length 8 meters, width 0.3 meters, and height 0.5 meters, considering a sedimentation tanks with a length of 3 meters, in three different inlet concentration, three flow rates and three Froude numbers. The baffles were mounted at the bottom of the tank and the effects of the angle, height and position in the tanks were investigated. The results showed that on average, employing the baffles increased the sedimentation efficiency 5 to 6% and the highest value was obtained for angle 60 with respect to the flow direction. According to the results of this study, the most favorable height and position of these baffles were obtained to be in 40% of the depth of the flow and 50% of the length of the sedimentation tank, respectively. Also, by increasing the number of baffles, the sedimentation efficiency decreased. Regarding the sedimentation regions in this case, more than 80% of the settled sediments were observed in the middle of the tank measured from the inlet.

  • This study aims to look into students' and teachers' recognition about learning with a humanoid robot and seek for a policy implication for the direction of education using humanoid robot. To achieve this goal, a survey with elementary school students and teachers was used as the method of analysis. The main results are as follows: There was a difference in the recognition of the teachers and the students regarding the most effective subject through the use of humanoid robot. While the students consider Physical Education as the major subject, the teachers consider Science as the one. The students recognize that the use of humanoid is most effective in helping their learning while the teachers recognize that it is most effective in helping their teaching. As an expected positive effect, both of them choose an increase in interest in learning as the main effect of the use of humanoid robot, but the students, unlike the teachers, consider the improvement of their academic achievement as its main effect as well. These results show differences in the recognition of the use of humanoid between the teachers and the students, and in addition, confirm the difference between them depending on their background.

  • The purpose of inlet baffle is to distribute the flow uniformly over the entire cross-sectional area of the sedimentation basin. The goal when designing this baffle is to achieve some head loss while keeping the velocity gradients through the ports equal to the velocity gradient in the end of the flocculator, so as to not break up the flocs. Sedimentation tank performance is strongly influenced by hydrodynamic and physical effects such as inlet design. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of open ratio of the inlet baffle on hydraulic behavior within a rectangular sedimentation basin using CFD simulation and ADV technique. In order to verify the CFD simulation, we measured the factual velocity at 18 points in the full-scale sedimentation basin at Y water treatment plant. Good agreement was obtained between the CFD predictions and the experimentally measured data. From the simulation results of the existing basin with 7.4 % open ratio, it was investigated that extreme decrease in velocity occurred in the middle of basin. Since then, flow features was unstable. The region which the velocity decrease rapidly moved forward to the flow direction in proportion to the increase of inflow velocity. Also, it was investigated that the flow characteristic of 6.0 % open ratio was significantly different from 7.4 % open ratio at the same configuration condition. These results are a clear indication that inflow momentum and open ratio are the parameters affecting the characteristics of hydraulic patterns. The influence of these parameters on the sedimentation performance requires further study.

  • Objective: The goal of this research is to develop new user behavior model using user motion analysis with microscopic perspective for attracting user's participation in interactive space. Background: The interactive space is 'human's place', which is made up of complex elements of digital virtual space and traditional analog and physical environment based on human-computer interaction system. Human behavior has changed in it at the same time. If the user couldn't make participation in interaction, the purpose of the system is not met, which reduces its effect. Therefore, we need to focus on interactive space that is potential future direction from a new point of view. Method: For this research, we would discuss and study fields of interactive space; (1) finding definition of interactive space and studying background of theory about it. (2) providing base of user behavior model with study of user's context that is to be user information and motion. (3) examining user motion, classify basic motion type and making user participation behavior model in phases. Results: Through this process, user's basic twenty motions which are systematized are taken as a standard for analysis of interaction process and participation in interactive space. Then, 'NK-$I^5$ (I Five)' model is developed for user participation types in interactive space. There are five phases of user participation behavior: Imperception, Interest, Involvement, Immersion, and Influence. In this analysis, three indicators which are time, motion types, and user relationship are found to be related to participation. Conclusion: The capabilities and limitation of this research is discussed to attract user participation. This paper focuses especially on contribution of design to lead user's participation in interactive system and expectation to help adapt to user centered design of various interactive space with new aspect of user behavior research. Application: The results of the 'NK-$I^5$ (I Five)' model might help to realize successful interactive space based on user centered design.

  • Today, the elderly is increasing gradually in the Republic of Korea society and this problem will be more serious in the near future. Therefore, engineering support for aged people is required. We are establishing a new field of healthcare engineering for elderly people and aiming to support for aged people and disabled people using adaptive control and instrument technology. In this paper, the goal is to implement the shared control of a robot mobility aid for the elderly. As using this type of assistive technology to be useful by its intended user community, it supports elderly people and handicapped people to live independently in their private homes. The interface transforms the force applied by the user into the robot's motion. Devices like buttons, joysticks, and levers already exist for relaying user input; however, they require hand displacement that would loosen or otherwise release the user's hold. Such interfaces make operation very difficult and potentially unsafe. Therefore, we propose a shared control system. It's safe more than joysticks and buttons. The shared control is a means of registering the user's intention through physical interaction. It's an important component in the development of robotic elderly assistant. The concept of shared control describes a system which is two or more independent control systems. We are using that the three component blocks consist of pressure sensor (flexible force sensor), circuit of measurement and transfer function. Experimental trials of this paper have been tested at the indoor environment. The robot is able to know the user intended direction through haptic device were logged along with the robot's force sensor.
