  • Modern earthquake-resistant design aims to isolate architectural precast concrete panels from the structural system so as to reduce the interaction with the supporting structure and hence minimize damage. The present study seeks to maximize the cladding-structure interaction by developing an energy-dissipating cladding system (EDCS) that is capable of functioning both as a structural brace, as well as a source of energy dissipation. The EDCS is designed to provide added stiffness and damping to buildings with steel moment resisting frames with the goal of favorably modifying the building response to earthquake-induced forces without demanding any inelastic action and ductility from the basic lateral force resisting system. Because many modern building facades typically have continuous and large openings on top of the precast cladding panels at each floor level for window system, the present study focuses on spandrel type precast concrete cladding panel. The preliminary design of the EDCS was based on existing guidelines and research data on architectural precast concrete cladding and supplemental energy dissipation devices. For the component-level study, the preliminary design was validated and further refined based on the results of nonlinear finite element analyses. The stiffness and strength characteristics of the EDCS were established from a series of nonlinear finite element analyses and are discussed in detail in this paper.

  • This article describes a methodology based on experiments and 1D modeling work related to the exhaust system analysis of a small two-stroke engine. The primary goal of this work was to understand how the design criteria of a compact exhaust system influenced the exhaust port pressure, since its evolution controls not only engine performance but also exhaust emissions. On the experimental side, a fully instrumented 50cc two-stroke engine was used to check the behavior of three different exhaust systems. A problem related to instantaneous pressure measurements in unsteady, hot flow was detected and solved during the study. To build the 1D model of the three exhaust systems, experimental information on the steady flow and the impulse test rigs was obtained under controlled conditions in specific facilities. Accurate comparisons between measured and calculated exhaust port instantaneous pressures were obtained from the following different exhaust system configurations: a straight duct, a tapered pipe and the three compact exhaust systems. The last step in the method used this model to analyze the pressure waves inside the exhaust system and detect the influence of the geometric parameters. The results should lead to improvements in the design process of complex compact exhaust systems in two-stroke engines.

  • Nowadays an information exchange on XML such as B2B electronic commerce is spreading. Therefore the systematic and stable management mechanism for storing the exchanged information is needed. For this goal there are many research activities for connection between XML application and relational database. But because XML data have hierarchical structures and relational database can store only flat-structured data, we need to make the conversion rule which changes the hierarchical architecture to 2-dimensional information. Accordingly the modeling methodology for storing each structured information in relational database is needed. In this paper, we introduce a XML modeling methodology to design W3C XML schema using UML and we propose a unified design methodology for relational database schema to store XML data efficiently in relational databases. In the second place, in order to verify objectivity of a unified design methodology. By the way of Ronald Bourret, First we introduce the method of the transformation from XML schema to object model and second we translate object model into relational database schema. Therefore we show the mutual consistency between those consequence, and so can verify a unified design methodology.

  • Delta robots are usually used for industrial manufacturing, but heavy weight and expensive price have been obstacles to rapid propagation of robots in the field. The goal of this research is to make light-weight and price-competitive delta robots. To reduce the weight, we used plastic material for the arm link, and to reduce the price, we used a step-motor as the main actuator. First we formulated the equations of inverse kinematics for the designed delta robot and then verified these equations by using multibody-dynamics simulation. An algorithm of motion control was developed and applied to the motion-processing unit using a timer-interrupt of 8 milliseconds. Finally, we tested the performance of the new delta robot by checking its control of motion along line segments.

  • This paper is an architectural paper which has been studied about dowelling form and culture in southwestern island area of Korea from 18C up to now. The goal of this research is to present the basic data in new modeling development of dwelling house. This area had less cultural interchange than inland area because of geographical conditions. Therefore, so far, many traditional factors have been handed down and especially, a good many commoner's traditional houses exit. The traditional houses is composed of Anchae (a central house), Sarangchae (an attached house of Anchae). Sometimes, Sarangchae was ommitted according to the circumstance of the house. Generally, the form of arrangement of house is divided into two shapes; One is 'ㅡ' shape which has only Anchae and the other is 'ㄱ' shape which has Anchae and Sarangchae. Approximately, since 1970's, new type of house has been built in this area. Usually, Inside this house are living room, kitchen, toilet, utility and 3 rooms. Wall is made of brick and roof is made of concrete's slabe. We can not find the traditional culture in this type of houses. The house in the futrue, the factors of cuture and the convenience of the present age have to be coexisted.

  • There are many ways in which electric vehicles are mathematically modeled and simulated. The components have different physical background and models, but have to fit into one mathematical model. A multiphysics model structure is required. Depending on the goal of the simulation, there are various levels on which the simulation can be performed. This is called multilevel, consisting of a conceptual system level, a circuit level and a more detailed component level. This paper discusses which multiphysics models and multilevel simulations are required for the various components in an electric vehicle. Also, this simulation approach could improve the effectiveness of learning in engineering education.

  • The interest of data mining in artificial intelligence with fuzzy logic has been increased. Data mining is a process of extracting desirable knowledge and interesting pattern ken large data set. Because of expansion of WWW, web data is more and more huge. Besides mining web contents and web structures, another important task for web mining is web usage mining which mines web log data to discover user access pattern. The goal of web usage mining in this paper is to find interesting user pattern in the web with user feedback. It is very important to find user's characteristic fer e-business environment. In Customer Relationship Management, recommending product and sending e-mail to user by extracted users characteristics are needed. Using our method, we extract user profile from the result of web usage mining. In this research, we concentrate on finding association rules and verify validity of them. The proposed procedure can integrate fuzzy set concept and association rule. Fuzzy association rule uses given server log file and performs several preprocessing tasks. Extracted transaction files are used to find rules by fuzzy web usage mining. To verify the validity of user's feedback, the web log data from our laboratory web server.

  • This paper describes an approach to collaborative design which focuses on the effects of individual activities on the overall design process. We utilize a new process modeling tool to define the process and then analyze and refine the process based on critical paths. This information is then shared over the Internet with all participants. The goal of this system is to detect critical errors at initial design stage and guide the designers to make better decisions based on the knowledge of the overall process. This system enables participating designers to publish his local process through an Internet bulletin board. Other members of the team can then provide feedback based on how the proposed process impacts their activities. The system provides a context-rich, persistent forum for collecting, preserving, and refining corporate expertise of the team. For example, designers can select any process from the bulletin board and use it as a template for his current project and then use it to maintain his own design history. This paper is based on the process modeling concepts of Design Roadamap and describe several key extensions in the area of CPM calculations and collaborative interfaces.

  • The current industrial development and the Increase of population along Nakdong River have produced a rapid Increase of wastewater discharge. This has resulted in problem of water quality control and management. Although many efforts have been carried out, water quality has not significantly improved. The goal of this study is to design a NGIS-based water quality management system for the scientific water quality control and management in the Nakdong River. For general water quality analysis, QULA2E model was applied to the Nakdong River. A sensitivity analysis was made to determine significant parameters and an optimization was made to estimate optimal values. The calibration and verification were performed by using observed water quality data for Nakdong River. A water qualify management system for Nakdong River was made by connecting the QUAL2E model to ArcView. It allows a Windows-based Graphic User Interface(GUI) to implement all operation with regard to water quality analysis. The modeling system in this study will be an efficient NGIS for planning of water quality management.
