  • Three naphthalene glycosides (1-3), four flavonoids (4-7), and two galloyl glycosides (8-9) were isolated from the stem-bark of Juglans mandshurica (Juglandaceae). Their structures were determined by chemical and spectral means, including to 2D-NMR (COSY, HMQC, and HMBC) experiments. Amongst the isolated compounds, taxifolin (4) showed the most potent HIV-induced cytopethic activity against MT-4 cells with complete inhibitory concentration ($IC_{100}$) value of $25{\;}{\mu\textrm{g}}/ml$ and maximum cytotoxic concentration ($CC_{100}$) value of above $100{\;}{\mu\textrm{g}}/ml$. However, naphthalene glycosides (1-3), flavonoids (5-7)), and galloyl tannins (8-9) were inactive against anti-HIV-1 activity.

  • In this study, we isolated two new isorhamnetin glycosides, designated as nelumboroside A (3) and nelumboroside B (4), as well as the previously-characterized isorhamnetin glucoside (1) and isorhamnetin rutinoside (2), from the n-BuOH fraction of Nelumbo nucifera stamens. The structures of the two new compounds were then determined, using chemical and spectroscopic techniques. All isolated isorhamnetin glycosides 1-4 showed marked antioxidant activities in the DPPH, and $ONOO^-$ assays.

  • Wm was isolated from Cynanchum wilfordii (Asclepiadaceae) as a mixture form of polypregnane glycosides that included wilfoside K1N and wilfoside C1N. In the present study, we investigated the anti-angiogenic effect of wilfoside glycosides using in vivo and in vitro assay systems. We first demonstrated that concentrated conditioned media obtained from Wm-treated HepG2 human hepatoblastoma cells blocked the angiogenic activation of Wm-untreated concentrated conditioned media, suggesting that Wm may have an inhibitory effect on tumor-induced angiogenesis. • Five secoiridoids (1-3, 5, 10), a iridoid (4) three flavonol glycosides (7-9) and a coumarin (6), were isolated from the flowers of Hydrangea paniculata. Their chemical structures were elucidated as kingiside (1), morroniside (2), sweroside (3), loganin (4), vogeloside (5), umbelliferone (6), quercetin-3-O-sambubioside (7), quercetin-3-O-neohesperidoside (8), kaempferol 3-O-sambubioside (9) and secologanin dimethyl acetal (10), respectively, by spectroscopic analysis. All isolated compounds 1-10 were assessed for their ability to induce C2C12 myotube hypertrophy. Among them, loganin (4) and kaempferol 3-O-sambubioside (9) increase the diameter of C2C12 myotubes. All isolated compounds 1-10 were firstly reported from the flowers of Hydrangea paniculata, and the skeletal muscle hypertrophic activity of 4 and 9 was also reported for the first time.

  • The composition of glycolipid, phospholipid and fatty acid of brown rice, milled rice and bran were studied for four varieties of rice such as Nampung, Milyang # 23, Whasung and Jinhung. The content of esterified steryl glycosides(ESG) in glycolipids was the highest in the brown rice, milled rice and bran. Monogalactosyl diglycerides(MGDG) and steryl glycosides(SG) were the second highest. Of the phospholipids, phosphatidyl cholines(PC) + phosphatidyl serines(PS) were the next. Fatty acid composition of glycolipids were different from total lipids and neutral lipids in brown rice and milled rice. Palmitic acid content was very high and oleic acid content was low in glycolipids. The major fatty acid components of phospholipids in brown and milled rice were also palmitic, linoleic and oleic acid. In the bran, the major fatty acid classes were different from those of milled rice.

  • The methanol extract of the rootbark of Fraxinus sieboldiana Blume(Oleaceae) gave two coumarin glycosides, fraxin (fraxetin-8-glucoside), $C_{16}H_{18}O_{10},\;mp\;204^{\circ}\;and\;esculin\;(esculetin-6-glucoside),\;C_{15}H_{16}O_{9},\;mp\;204{\sim}205^{\circ}$. Beside, the methanol extract of the root bark was found to contain mannitol. ${\beta}-sitosterol$ is confirmed by massspectrometry.
