  • The composition of glycolipid, phospholipid and fatty acid of brown rice, milled rice and bran were studied for four varieties of rice such as Nampung, Milyang # 23, Whasung and Jinhung. The content of esterified steryl glycosides(ESG) in glycolipids was the highest in the brown rice, milled rice and bran. Monogalactosyl diglycerides(MGDG) and steryl glycosides(SG) were the second highest. Of the phospholipids, phosphatidyl cholines(PC) + phosphatidyl serines(PS) were the next. Fatty acid composition of glycolipids were different from total lipids and neutral lipids in brown rice and milled rice. Palmitic acid content was very high and oleic acid content was low in glycolipids. The major fatty acid components of phospholipids in brown and milled rice were also palmitic, linoleic and oleic acid. In the bran, the major fatty acid classes were different from those of milled rice.

  • Lipids isolated from three barley samples were identified and quantitated by column, thin layer and gas liquid chromatographic techniques. These lipids were shown to consist of 69.3-73.1% neutral lipids, 9.6-16.5% glycolipids, and 14.2-17.9% phospholipids. Among the neutral lipids, triglycerides were predominant (54.2 to 55.7%) with smaller amounts of 1,2-diglycerides, 1,3-diglycerides, free sterols, free fatty acids, steryl esters, and three unknown being present. Among the glycolipids, digalactosyl diglycerides (31.3 to 33.2%) and monogalactosyl diglycerides (26.2 to 29.6%) were the most abundant. Esterified steryl glycosides, steryl glycosides, cerebrosides, sulfolipids, and an unknown component were present as minor components. Of the phosopholipids, phosphatidyl cholines and serines, lysophosphatidyl cholines, and phosphatidyl ethanolamines were the major components, comprising over 80% of this class. The major fatty acids in the total and the three lipid classes were palmitic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids. However, the neutral lipids fraction contained more oleic acid than other lipid fractions, and the phospholipids fraction contained more palmitic acid than the other lipid fractions.

  • Egg yolk oil was obtained by roasting and Pressing egg yolks of hen's egg breeding on the open bin system and the cage system, respectively. Lipids in egg yolk oil were extracted with a mixture of chloroform and methanol (2 : 1, V/V), and fractionated into neutral lipid, glycolipid, and phospholipid by silicic aicd column chromatography. Fatty acid composition of each fraction was determined by gas chromatography. The major fatty acids of total lipids and neutral lipids are in sequence of oleic acid, palmitic acid, and linoleic acid. The major fatty acids of the glycolipids are palmitic acid, oleic acid, stearic acid, and lauric acid successively. The major fatty acids of phospholipids are oleic acid, lauric acid, and Palmitic acid consecutively. About the fatty acids composition of egg yolk oil in the open barn system, the contents of saturated fatty acid are lower and the contents of unsaturated fatty acid are higher than that of the case system. The contents of unsaturated fatty acid in egg yolk oil is higher than that of saturated fatty acid in total lipids and nutral lipids. Unsaturated fatty acid/saturated fatty acid of e99 yolk oil in the open barn system is higher than that of the cage system in glycolipids and phospholipids.

  • The diagnostic value of membrane glycolipid biochemistry index, the lipid-bound sialic acid (LSA) and total sialic acid (TSA) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was evaluated in 30 intracranial and 65 gastrointestinal tumors. The plasma LSA, TSA and red cell membrane sialic acid (R-SA) in were determined according to the method of Sevenmerhulm. Our results showed that the levels of LSA and TSA in CSF of intracranial tumor patients was higher than that of normal group(p<0.01). The concentration of TSA and LSA in patients with malignant glioma was higher than that of benign meningioma patients(P<0.01). No significance was found between intracranial halmatoma patients and normal control group for levels of membrane glycolipids (p>0.05). Results also found that the plasma LSA, TSA and R-SA of gastric carcinoma were significantly higher than those of control group (p<0.05); while no significant difference was found in the plasma LSA, TSA and R-SA levels between chronic gastritis, gastrohelcoma and normal control group (p>0.05). Plasma LSA, TSA and R-SA levels of gastric carcinoma patient were significantly higher than those of chronic gastritis patients and gastrohelcoma patients(p<0.05). It was also found that plasma LSA, TSA and R-SA contents were significantly higher in large intestine carcinoma patients than in benign in stestine tumor patients (p<0.05) while no significant difference was found between intestine benign tumor and normal control group (p>0.05). The levels of LSA, TSA and R-SA were obviously higher in the patients with metastasis than in the ones without (p<0.05.) The membrane glycolipid biochemistry index LSA and TSA in CSF are sensive markers for diagnosing intracranial tumors. For gastrointestinal malignant tumors the plasma LSA TSA and red blood cell membrane SA may be considered as auxiliary indicators for diagnosis. They can be used for distinguishing benign from malignant tumors.

  • Milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) is a lipid carrier in mammals including humans that consists mainly of polar lipids, like phospholipids and glycolipids. In this study, a process to enrich polar lipids in commercial butter and whey powder, including polar lipids of MFGM, was developed. WPC (whey protein concentrate) 60 was selected as the most suitable raw material based on the yield, phospholipid, protein, and lactose content of the polar lipid fraction obtained by ethanol extraction of two WPC (WPC60 and WPC70) and two buttermilk (A and B). After fractionation under optimum conditions, the polar-lipid enriched fraction from WPC60 contained 38.56% phospholipids. The content of glycolipids, cerebroside, lactosylceramide, ganglioside GM3, ganglioside GD3, was 0.97%, 0.55%, 0.09%, and 0.14%, respectively. Rancimat results showed that the oxidation stability of fish oil increased with an increase in the polar-lipid fraction by more than 30 times. In addition, the secretion of IL-6 and TNF-α decreased in a concentration-dependent manner after treatment of RAW 264.7 cells with 0.1 to 100 ppm of the polar lipid fraction. In this study, polar lipid concentrates with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, were prepared from milk processing by-products. The MFGM polar lipid concentrates made from by-products are not only additives for infants, but are also likely to be used as antioxidants in cooking oils and as active ingredients for functional foods.
