This study proposed a life cycle impact assessment index that can indicate the environment-related information of the product in monetary value such that the national geographical, environmental, and social features are fully reflected based on a damage-oriented model. First, the estimation process was classified into characterization, damage assessment, and integration stages considering the six biggest impact categories: resource depletion, global warming, ozone depletion, acidification, eutrophication, and photochemical oxidant creation. Moreover, this study came up with the 16 category endpoints related to the 6 impact categories, and the damage function, to the 4 largest safeguard subjects. The integration indices of finally identified impact categories were KRW 21.8/kg Sb, KRW 6.19/kg$CO_2$, KRW 53,000/kg CFC-11, KRW 13,100/kg $SO_2$, KRW 2,310/kg ${PO_4}^{3-}$, and KRW 3,030/kg $C_2H_4$. Using the results of this research, environmental impacts based on the environmental load generated throughout the entire life cycle of a product can serve as a single index in monetary value; thus enhancing understanding and utilization of the results of life cycle impact assessments.

This study was conducted to classify agro-climatic zones in Northeast district of China. For agro-climatic zoning, monthly mean temperature and precipitation data from Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA, USA) between 1979 and 2010 (http://disc.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/) were collected. Altitude and vegetation fraction of East Asia from Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) were also used to classify them. The criteria of agro-climatic classification were altitude (200 m, between 200-800 m, 800 m), vegetation fraction (60%), annual mean temperature ($0^{\circ}C$), temperature in the hottest month ($22^{\circ}C$), and annual precipitation (700 mm). In Northeast district of China, mean annual temperature, annual precipitation, and solar radiation were $3.4^{\circ}C$, 613.2 mm, and $4,414.2MJ/m^2$ between 2009 and 2013, respectively. Twenty-two agro-climatic zones identified in Northeast district of China by metrics classification method, from which the map of agro-climatic zones for Northeast district of China was derived. The results could be useful as information for estimating agro-meteorological characteristics and predicting crop development and crop yield of Northeast district of China as well as those of North Korea.
The interaction between land surface and atmosphere is essentially affected by hydrometeorological variables including soil moisture. Accurate estimation of soil moisture at spatial and temporal scales is crucial to better understand its roles to the weather systems. The KLDAS(Korea Land Data Assimilation System) is a regional, specifically Korea peninsula land surface information systems. As other prior land data assimilation systems, this can provide initial soil field information which can be used in atmospheric simulations. For this study, as an enabling high-resolution tool, weather research and forecasting(WRF-ARW) model is applied to produce precipitation data using GFS(Global Forecast System) with GFS embedded and KLDAS soil moisture information as initialization data. WRF-ARW generates precipitation data for a specific region using different parameters in physics options. The produced precipitation data will be employed for simulations of Hydrological Models such as HEC(Hydrologic Engineering Center) - HMS(Hydrologic Modeling System) as predefined input data for selected regional water responses. The purpose of this study is to show the impact of a hydrometeorological variable such as soil moisture in KLDAS on hydrological consequences in Korea peninsula. The study region, Chongmi River Basin, is located in the center of Korea Peninsular. This has 60.8Km river length and 17.01% slope. This region mostly consists of farming field however the chosen study area placed in mountainous area. The length of river basin perimeter is 185Km and the average width of river is 9.53 meter with 676 meter highest elevation in this region. We have four different observation locations : Sulsung, Taepyung, Samjook, and Sangkeug observatoriesn, This watershed is selected as a tentative research location and continuously studied for getting hydrological effects from land surface information. Simulations for a real regional storm case(June 17~ June 25, 2006) are executed. WRF-ARW for this case study used WSM6 as a micro physics, Kain-Fritcsch Scheme for cumulus scheme, and YSU scheme for planetary boundary layer. The results of WRF simulations generate excellent precipitation data in terms of peak precipitation and date, and the pattern of daily precipitation for four locations. For Sankeug observatory, WRF overestimated precipitation approximately 100 mm/day on July 17, 2006. Taepyung and Samjook display that WRF produced either with KLDAS or with GFS embedded initial soil moisture data higher precipitation amounts compared to observation. Results and discussions in detail on accuracy of prediction using formerly mentioned manners are going to be presented in 2011 Annual Conference of the Korean Society of Hazard Mitigation.

Recently, disasters have become bigger and more complex, and the economic damage has increased due to the increase of urbanization and the concentration of infrastructure. These large complex disasters occur simultaneously in the second and third disasters due to the first single disaster, but the existing disaster management system in Korea is less adaptable because it is divided into natural disasters and social disasters. The cause of the complex disaster is the rapid urbanization of the residential environment caused by the change of the industrial structure, and the threat factors are various and unpredictable in the living environment. Natural disasters are becoming larger and more complex due to climate change due to global warming. Unlike the past, natural disasters are likely to develop into multiple disasters such as urban paralysis. Therefore, this paper considers natural disasters and social disasters in a comprehensive concept in order to overcome limitations of disaster management by existing single factors and manage disasters effectively and rationally. It is expected that it will play a big role in protecting the lives and property of the people through the establishment of a preemptive disaster management framework.

Recently, researches on DBRN(DataBase Referenced Navigation) system are being carried out to replace GNSS(Global Navigation Satellite System), as weaknesses of GNSS were found that are caused by the intentional interference and the jamming of the satellite signal. This paper describes the gravity gradient modeling and the construction of EKF(Extended Kalman Filter) based GGRN(Gravity Gradient Referenced Navigation). To analyze the performance of GGRN, fourteen flight trajectories were made for simulations over whole South Korea. During the simulations, we considered the errors in both DB(DataBase) and sensor as well as the flight altitudes. Accurate performances were found, when errors in the DB and the sensor are small and they located at lower altitude. For comparative evaluation, the traditional TRN(Terrain Referenced Navigation) was also developed and performances were analyzed relative to those from the GGRN. In fact, most of GGRN performed better in low altitude, but both of precise gravity gradient DB and gradiometer were required to obtain similar level of precisions at the high altitude. In the future, additional tests and evaluations on the GGRN need to be performed to investigate on more factors such as DB resolution, flight speed, and the update rate.

Most of regions within the city of Mokpo, located on the southwest coast of the Korean Peninsula, are subjected to significant subsidence because about 70% of the city is land reclaimed from the sea (Kim et al., 2005). In this study, we aimed to estimate the rate of subsidence over Mokpo by using PALSAR L-band dataset from 2006 to 2010. Time series analysis was performed as well using GPS surveying data from 2010 to 2012. Results from these two independent datasets are then compared and analyzed over the common period of time. GPS data processing provides the results of seasonal variation on the surface, that is, via repeatedly rising and falling in association with the periodic cycle. Therefore, a time series analysis was performed to calculate the rate of ground subsidence. The deformation rates calculated for the same point are 3.89cm/yr and 2.65cm/yr from the GPS data and SAR data, respectively. SAR and GPS data processing results show a very similar pattern in terms of magnitude of annual subsidence. Thus, if the two datasets are integrated together, new modeling on ground subsidence is feasible. Lastly, subsidence was detected in a landfill area in the city of Mokpo, which has been continuously occurring through 2012.

Solar radiation components reflected by the sea surface ($R_{ss}\uparrow$) are additional energy sources comprising the solar radiation regime. Previous studies, based on observational approaches, indicated that $R_{ss}\uparrow$ is an available climatological resource. However, an estimation process for $R_{ss}\uparrow$ has not been established. In this case study over Jeju Island in South Korea, we applied a new estimation process to solar radiation modeling and discussed the spatial distribution of $R_{ss}\uparrow$ and its seasonal variation. Our results showed that the illuminated area and the intensity of $R_{ss}\uparrow$ became greatest at the winter solstice and least at the summer solstice. We estimated the illuminated area of $R_{ss}\uparrow$ as it expanded over the southern slope of Jeju Island. At the winter solstice, on a daily basis, the area and intensity of illumination by $R_{ss}\uparrow$ were $182.3km^2$ and $0.41\;MJ\;m^{-2}\;day\;{-1}$, respectively. Comparing the daily accumulative and instantaneous values of $R_{ss}\uparrow$ intensity, the difference was about 20 times greater in daily cases than in instantaneous cases. On the other hand, for instantaneous values, the $R_{ss}\uparrow$ intensity accounted for up to 33% of the three components, i.e., direct, diffuse and reflected radiation in winter solstice. In addition, it was estimated that the sea surface reflectance depended on the wind speed. Therefore, in a practical use of this revised model, wind conditions should be considered as a critical factor in estimating $R_{ss}\uparrow$.

The AC-common bus microgrid system can overcome several weaknesses of the DC microgrid system by interconnecting the DC/AC inverters used for renewable energy with an AC network. Nevertheless, the unbalanced loads inherent in the electric power systems of island and small communities can deteriorate the performance of the AC microgrid system. This is because of the limited voltage regulation capability and mixed power flow in the voltage source inverter. In order to overcome the unbalanced load condition, this paper proposes a voltage and current control algorithm for the 4-leg inverter based on the single phase d-q control method, as well as the modeling of the voltage controller using Matlab/Simulink S/W. From the S/W simulation and experiment of the 250KW proto-type inverter, it is confirmed that the proposed algorithm is a useful tool for the design and operation of the AC microgrid system.

Recently the importance of renewable energy is stood out regarding to the international concern about global environmental issues. Wind power is beginning to receive attention as one of renewable energy, and world-wide researches about wind power are being carried out. In the wind power system, tower structure plays an important roles for continuous and stable generation of electricity. Researchers use various analytical models to research and develop about tower structures. In this study, the effects of natural frequencies of various wind turbine tower models have been analyzed. It is possible to simplify the detailed parts of models by using modified tower unit weight since the results of 1st natural frequency show that the difference is only 0.14%. Since the difference in natural frequency is greater than 10%, according to the boundary condition, the simple fix end support is not appropriate to represent the real structure of the tower. It is expected that the result of this study may be utilized to establish the criterion about appropriate modelling method.
Recently, the development of accurate gravity-meter and GPS make it possible to obtain high resolution gravity data. Though gravity data interpretation like modeling and inversion has significantly improved, gravity data processing itself has improved very little. Conventional gravity data processing removes gravity effects due to mass and height difference between base and measurement level. But, it would be a biased density model when some or whole part of anomalous bodies exist above the base level. We attempted to make a multiquadric surface of the survey area from topography with DEM (Digital Elevation Map) data. Then we constituted rectangular blocks which reflect real topography of the survey area by the multiquadric surface. Thus, we were able to carry out 3-D inversions which include information of topography. We named this technique, 3-D Gravity Terrain Inversion (3DGTI). The model test showed that the inversion model from 3DGTI made better results than conventional methods. Furthermore, the 3-dimensional model from the 3DGTI method could maintain topography and as a result, it showed more realistic geologic model. This method was also applied on real field data in Masan-Changwon area. Granitic intrusion is an important geologic characteristic in this area. This method showed more critical geological boundaries than other conventional methods. Therefore, we concluded that in the case of various rocks and rugged terrain, this new method will make better model than convention ones.
