Traditional damage detection methods for nonlinear structures are often based on simplified models, such as the mass-spring-damper and shear-building models, which are insufficient for predicting the vibration responses of a real structure. Conventional global nonlinear finite element model updating methods are computationally intensive and time consuming. Thus, they cannot be applied to practical structures. A decentralized approach for identifying the nonlinear material parameters is proposed in this study. With this technique, a structure is divided into several small zones on the basis of its structural configuration. The unknown material parameters and measured vibration responses are then divided into several subsets accordingly. The structural parameters of each subset are then updated using the vibration responses of the subset with the Newton-successive-over-relaxation (SOR) method. A reinforced concrete and steel frame structure subjected to earthquake loading is used to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method. The parameters in the material constitutive model, such as compressive strength, initial tangent stiffness and yielding stress, are identified accurately and efficiently compared with the global nonlinear model updating approach.
A unique lightweight string truss deployable bridge assembled by thin-walled fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) and metal profiles was designed for emergency applications. As a new structure, investigations into the static structural performance under the serviceability limit state are desired for examining the structural integrity of the developed bridge when subjected to unsymmetrical loadings characterized by combined torsion and bending. In this study, a full-scale experimental inspection was conducted on a fabricated bridge, and the combined flexural-torsional behavior was examined in terms of displacement and strains. The experimental structure showed favorable strength and rigidity performances to function as deployable bridge under unsymmetrical loading conditions and should be designed in accordance with the stiffness criterion, the same as that under symmetrical loads. In addition, a finite element model (FEM) with a simple modeling process, which considered the multi segments of the FRP members and realistic nodal stiffness of the complex unique hybrid nodal joints, was constructed and compared against experiments, demonstrating good agreement. A FEM-based numerical analysis was thereafter performed to explore the effect of the change in elastic modulus of different FRP elements on the static deformation of the bridge. The results confirmed that the change in elastic modulus of different types of FRP element members caused remarkable differences on the bending and torsional stiffness of the hybrid bridge. The global stiffness of such a unique bridge can be significantly enhanced by redesigning the critical lower string pull bars using designable FRP profiles with high elastic modulus.

A numerical study on required stiffness of the longitudinal stiffener in the webs stiffened with flat plate at one-side of the web was conducted. The longitudinal stiffeners are commonly placed around 0.2D, i.e., 1/5 the web depth due to fabrication convenience although most plate girders for bridges are unsymmetric section. Considering asymmetry of section, aspect ratio of web and the rigidity ratio of longitudinal stiffener(${\gamma}^*$), eigenvalue analysis were performed to evaluate the buckling strength for the webs with a stiffener located at 0.16D~0.24D. Based on the parametric analysis, the required stiffness of the longitudinal stiffener to satisfy the buckling strength specified in AASHTO LRFD specifications was presented.

Continuous Compaction Control is a new cutting edge technique in United States, Japan and European construction market that uses an instrumented compactor to measure soil stiffness in real time usually with vehicle tracking system such as Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). In this study, soil stiffness was evaluated by adapting Fourier transforming technique with acceleration data obtained from accelerometers used as a continuous compaction control instrument. The soil stiffness obtained by accelerometers gave analogous results with reference results such as dry density, elastic modulus obtained from Geogauge and Light falling deflectometer.
Magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) rotatory dampers are normally used for controlling the constant rotation of machines and engines. In this research, such a device is proposed to act as variable stiffness device to alleviate the rotational oscillation existing in the many engineering applications, such as motor. Under such thought, the main purpose of this work is to characterize the nonlinear torque-angular displacement/angular velocity responses of an MRF based variable stiffness device in oscillatory motion. A rotational hysteresis model, consisting of a rotatory spring, a rotatory viscous damping element and an error function-based hysteresis element, is proposed, which is capable of describing the unique dynamical characteristics of this smart device. To estimate the optimal model parameters, a modified whale optimization algorithm (MWOA) is employed on the captured experimental data of torque, angular displacement and angular velocity under various excitation conditions. In MWOA, a nonlinear algorithm parameter updating mechanism is adopted to replace the traditional linear one, enhancing the global search ability initially and the local search ability at the later stage of the algorithm evolution. Additionally, the immune operation is introduced in the whale individual selection, improving the identification accuracy of solution. Finally, the dynamic testing results are used to validate the performance of the proposed model and the effectiveness of the proposed optimization algorithm.

Naju Seokdanggan, Treasure No. 49, was dismantled and reconstructed due to poor performance. During construction, the crack area was reinforced and the inclination was improved. It is necessary to analyze the stiffness changes before and after the reconstruction of these cultural properties, and to establish a database of related information. In addition, there is a need for research on a scientific non-destructive testing method capable of predicting or evaluating the reinforcing effect. In this study, a simple equation for estimating the overall stiffness of the structural system was derived from information on the elasticity coefficient and the natural frequency measured by vibration tests before and after reconstruction work, and the applicability of the equation was examined. If the stiffness of important cultural properties is regularly investigated by the suggested method, it is judged that it can be used as data to estimate the time when structural safety diagnosis is necessary or when repair or reinforcement is necessary.

In this paper, a hybrid damage monitoring scheme for prestressed concrete (PSC) girder bridges by using sequential acceleration and impedance signatures is newly proposed. Damage types of interest include prestress-loss in tendon and flexural stiffness-loss in a concrete girder. The hybrid scheme mainly consists of three sequential phases: damage alarming, damage classification, and damage estimation. In the first phase, the global occurrence of damage is alarmed by monitoring changes in acceleration features. In the second phase, the type of damage is classified into either prestress-loss or flexural stiffness-loss by recognizing patterns of impedance features. In the third phase, the location and the extent of damage are estimated by using two different ways: a mode shape-based damage detection to detect flexural stiffness-loss and a natural frequency-based prestress prediction to identify prestress-loss. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is evaluated on a laboratory-scaled PSC girder model for which hybrid vibration-impedance signatures were measured for several damage scenarios of prestress-loss and flexural stiffness-loss.

Thermal deformation, such as bending and twisting, occurs among the polymer parts of air-conditioner indoor units because of repetitive temperature change during heating operation. In this study, a numerical method employing finite-element analysis to efficiently simulate the thermal deformation of an assembly is proposed. Firstly, the displacement of an actual assembly produced by thermal deformation was measured using a 3D optical measurement system. The measurement results indicated a general downward sag of the assembly, and the maximum displacement value was approximately 1 mm. The temperature distribution was measured using a thermographic camera, and the results were used as initial-temperature boundary conditions to perform temperature-displacement analysis. The simulation results agreed well with the measured data. To reduce the thermal deformation, the stiffness increased 100%. As the results, the maximum displacement decreased by approximately 5.4% and the twisting deformation of the holder improved significantly.

This paper is concerned with the vibration analysis of a simply-supported rectangular plate with a circular cutout. Even though there have be en many methods developed for the free vibration of the rectangular plate with a rectangular cutout., very few research has been carried out for the rectangular plate with a circular cutout. In this paper, a new methodology called independent coordinate coupling method, which was developed to save the computational effort for the free vibration analysis of rectangular plate with a rectangular cutout, is applied to the case of circular cutout. The independent coordinate coupling method employs the global coordinate system for the plate and the local coordinate system for the cutout. In the case of the rectangular plate with a circular cutout, the global coordinate system is the Cartesian co ordinate system and the local coordinate system is the polar coordinate system. By imposing the compatibility condition, the relationship between the global coordinates and the local coordinates is derived. This equation is then used for the calculation of the mass and stiffness matrices resulting in eigenvalue problem. The numerical results show the efficacy of the proposed method.
