  • A box scale affects the shear behavior of soils in the direct shear test. The purpose of this study is to investigate the scale effect on the shear behavior of dilative granular materials by testing specimens of different heights placed in a type C shear box. Experimental tests were performed on specimens composed of glass beads with different heights and equal initial void ratios. Results showed that the peak friction and dilation angles linearly increased with the specimen height; however, the residual friction angle remained relatively constant. Similarly, the shear stiffness increased with the specimen height, rapidly reaching its peak state. Height does not have a significant effect on the total volume changes; nevertheless, a high aspect ratio can be assumed to result in global and homogeneous failure. The results and interpretations may be used as reference for recommending shear box scale in direct shear tests.

  • Due to the recent emphasis on carbon neutrality and environmental regulations, the global electric vehicle (EV) market is experiencing rapid growth. This surge has raised concerns about the recycling and disposal methods for EV batteries. Unlike traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, EVs require unique and safe methods for the recovery and disposal of their batteries. In this process, predicting the lifespan of the battery is essential. Impedance and State of Charge (SOC) analysis are commonly used methods for this purpose. However, predicting the lifespan of batteries with complex chemical characteristics through electrical measurements presents significant challenges. To enhance the accuracy and precision of existing measurement methods, this paper proposes using a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model, a type of deep learning-based recurrent neural network, to diagnose battery performance. The goal is to achieve safe classification through this model. The designed structure was evaluated, yielding results with a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.8451, a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 1.3448, and an accuracy of 0.984, demonstrating excellent performance.

  • Images taken in low lamination condition suffer from low contrast and loss of information. Low lumination image enhancement algorithms are required to improve the quality and broaden the applications of such images. In this study, we proposed a new Low lumination image enhancement architecture consisting of a transformer-based curve learning and an encoder-decoder-based texture enhancer. Considering the high effectiveness of curve matching, we constructed a transformer-based network to estimate the learnable curve for pixel mapping. Curve estimation requires global relationships that can be extracted through the transformer framework. To further improve the texture detail, we introduced an encoder-decoder network to extract local features and suppress the noise. Experiments on LOL and SID datasets showed that the proposed method not only has competitive performance compared to state-of-the-art techniques but also has great efficiency.

  • Plant leaf classification is an imperative task when their use in real world is considered either for medicinal purposes or in agricultural sector. Accurate identification of plants is, therefore, quite important, since there are numerous poisonous plants which if by mistake consumed or used by humans can prove fatal to their lives. Furthermore, in agriculture, detection of certain kinds of weeds can prove to be quite significant for saving crops against such unwanted plants. In general, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are a suitable candidate for classification of images when small datasets are available. However, these suffer from local minima problems which can be effectively resolved using some global optimization techniques. Considering this issue, the present research paper presents an automated plant leaf classification system using optimized soft computing models in which ANNs are optimized using Grasshopper Optimization algorithm (GOA). In addition, the proposed model outperformed the state-of-the-art techniques when compared with simple ANN and particle swarm optimization based ANN. Results show that proposed GOA-ANN based plant leaf classification system is a promising technique for small image datasets.

  • Modern environmental problem that caused by the structure and system of human civil society threaten the ecological sustainability of the entire earth. Therefore it is an ecological crisis as a structural crisis. This ecological crisis is also a social crisis because it makes the survival of society difficult. Our society should aim and pursue an ecologically sustainable society because our response to this structural ecological-social crisis must be social-structured. Efforts to achieve an ecologically sustainable society call for fundamental and far-reaching changes in lifestyle, production and consumption patterns, and changes in the already established power structure that govern society today. It is necessary to pay attention to the new formulation of the constitutional law which is the legal basic order of the national community in the point that this fundamental and broad change must start from establishing the right relationship with nature. In this article, we present the principle of environmental state as a framework of constitutional norms for an ecologically sustainable society. According to M. Kloepfer, who in the late 1980s used the concept of an environmental state in Germany for the first time, the "state of the environment" refers to a "state (institution)" in which the inviolability of the environment is a measure and process goal of the state tasks and decisions. I would like to establish the environmental state as "a state that guarantees a balance between the social demands for nature and the maintenance of the natural living foundations and forms it together. In this context, I intend to establish the components of environmental state principles as follows. First, the ideological foundation of the environmental state is to respect the life community on earth, which consists of human beings and non-human beings, and to intrinsic value of nature, and to harmony with nature. In addition, the key tasks of environmental states are to secure environmental rights, responsibility for the global ecosystem and future generations, and recognition of the interests of animals. As a core social system for realizing this environmental state principle I would like to present (i) the economic order, (ii) the sustainable maintenance and management of the land and natural resources, and (iii) the agricultural and fishery industries and local communities.

  • This case study is to identify the role and strategies of think tanks in Britain which have shown institutional initiative in global welfare paradigm such as the establishment of welfare state, Thatcherism, and the Third Way. Fabian Society, Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), and Policy Exchange (PX) were selected for the research, and seven staff members from these think tanks were interviewed while their relevant publications were gathered and analyzed. As a result, the role of each think tank in welfare paradigm change were presented as well as strategic similarities were found: distinguished idea on the relationship between economy and welfare, adherence to independence based on their values, and strategic communication with diverse routs. However, there was also strategic difference between the first round and the second in the history. In the first round between Fabian Society and IEA, building a space for discussion based on new paradigm was the key, while in the second round between IPPR and PX, producing a set of alternative policies was the main task for them. This British example may provide useful implication to Korea, in which political debate on social welfare still just focus on individual pledges competition and the role of think tank is highly limited.
