  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine the impacts of global uncertainty on gross and net capital flows in Korea. Design/methodology/approach - We conduct an empirical analysis of the impact of global uncertainty on the net and gross capital flows in korea. To investigate the impacts, we incorporate linear and nonlinear ARDL models. Findings - We find global uncertainty has negative impacts on the gross and net capital flows. But this impact is nonlinear. The negative global uncertainty shocks are bigger than the positive global uncertainty shocks on capital flows in Korea. And we find this relationship is noticeable in gross capital inflows. We also find interest rate difference between the US and Korea is the main driving source in capital flow after the Global financial crisis. Research implications or Originality - The results of this study suggest that the negative impacts of global uncertainty are noticeable. This means that economic players in financial markets should be more concerned about the bad news.

  • Global firms have to acquire various kinds of knowledge from worldwide markets and use it strategically in local markets. Especially, the ability to learn competitive advantage of an industry leader or competing firm is a critical factor in a firm's competitiveness. The concept of knowledge transfer has been used to explain these phenomena. However, with the broadening concept of knowledge and increasing importance of interaction between firms, the perspective of knowledge transfer has reached its limits. In this study we will conceptualize the new concept of 'knowledge translation', and analyze the globalization case of Hyundai Motor Co. to improve the validity and usefulness of this perspective. The results show that knowledge translation is a critical factor of success in a firm's globalization and efficient management of the knowledge translation process enhances a firm's global competitiveness.

  • Purpose - This paper aims to review cold chain management, especially in the pharmaceutical industry, to explore the cold chain process of delivering temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products, and to identify areas for further development. Research design, data, and methodology - The paper, based on literature review and corporate analysis, reviews the development and status of the cold supply chain system, including its important role in the pharmaceutical industry. Results - Logistics in this field requires more stages than are typically needed. Due to the unique characteristics of the market, few companies can provide the services; currently, only few global companies with large networks and high technologies can afford to do so. Expanding pharmaceutical markets to meet global demand will require cold chain development, especially in "pharmerging" markets. Conclusions - Cold chain is a highly sensitive market in terms of products being carried within the chain that itself is a complex system. However, at the same time, it is a niche market with new opportunities. Hence, a sound cold chain infrastructure is needed to satisfy companies, governments, and customers for both commercial and public reasons.

  • This paper explores the difference between domestic new ventures(DNV) and international new ventures (INV). New ventures pursue business opportunities in their target markets armed with experienced founding team, distinctive competitive strategies, and different entry time at foreign market. As a result, INVs were founded by larger number of founding team and more experienced in international business. Also INVs enter earlier global market and pursue business opportunities than DNVs. in In terms of competitive strategy, INVs highlight continuous quality improvement and diverse customers compared to DNVs focused on intellectual property rights. INVs get higher profitabilities in financial performance. Finally, this paper suggests some managerial implications for new venture to explore business opportunities in the global markets.

  • Two of most important industries in Changwon, the distribution industry and the construction industry have been threatened by the recent economic downturn. Rehabilitating plans for traditional markets tend to focus on renovation of facilities rather than on the managerial solution. Traditional market plays vital roles as a social safety net and a source of development of regional economy. Modernization of facilities and differentiation of business areas are two most important issues for the revitalization of the traditional market. Traditional markets should adopt a strategy which can make a difference in characteristics of the market, regional culture, regional industry and consumer behavior of the region. Purposes of this study are: first, to understand characteristics of traditional markets in Changwon, second, to draw implications for administrative and financial supports for traditional markets in Changwon.

  • Due to environmental issues such as global warming, the importance of renewable energy is growing. Solar Power System is one of the most growing eco-friendly energy industries in the world, but Korea's solar energy industry faces fierce competition due to the trade regulations and changes in energy related laws in the major markets such as the U.S., EU and China. Therefore, Korea needs to diversify its export markets towards emerging markets. This paper analyzed 162 countries in the world and developed a model to measure how promising the countries are. GSMI(Grid connected Solar Market Index) and OSMI(Off-grid Solar Market Index) are invented based on the models. By using the developed model and the data of 162 countries over the 15-year period from 2000 to 2014, the foreign markets are ranked for searching the export market. According to the analysis, China, Japan, U.S, India and Taiwan ranked first to fifth in GSMI and OSMI ranking, which were followed by China, India, Bangladesh, Philippines and Afghanistan. The model developed through this research is expected to provide a more reasonable and scientific approach to the advancement of the Korean solar energy industry into overseas markets.

  • The primary purpose of the study is to investigate the volatility spillovers from global economic policy uncertainty and macroeconomic factors to the Islamic stock market returns. The study focuses on the Islamic stock indices of emerging economies including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Turkey. The Macroeconomic factors are industrial production, consumer price index, exchange rate. EGARCH model is employed for investigation of volatility spillovers. The results show that the global economic policy uncertainty has a significant spillover effect only on the returns of Turkish Islamic stock index. Similarly, the shocks in macroeconomic factors have little influence on the volatility of Islamic indices returns. The volatility of Indonesian and the Turkish Islamic stock indices returns is not influenced from the fluctuations in macroeconomic factors. However, there is significant volatility spillover only from industrial production to the returns of Malaysian Islamic index. The results suggest that the Islamic stock markets are less likely to influence from the global economic policies and macroeconomic factors. The stability of Islamic stocks provide opportunity for diversification of portfolios, particularly in stressed market conditions. The major price factors of Islamic markets could be firms' specific factors or investors' behaviors. The findings are helpful for policy makers and investors in formulating policies and portfolios.

This study implemented market share to explore those products' markets and compare it to other ASEAN countries. Results - The Indonesian potential products are T-shirts, singlets and other vests of textile materials, knitted or crocheted (excluding cotton); food preparations; medicaments consisting of mixed or unmixed products for therapeutic or prophylactic purposes; soap in the form of flakes, granules, powder, paste or in aqueous solution; and cocoa powder, not containing added sugar or other sweetening matter. The market analysis also showed that Indonesia still had not optimally accessed yet the largest market in the world for each product. Conclusions - The government should focus more on increasing the competitiveness of those products, particularly in those global marketplaces.

  • This study aims to provide strategic recommendations for promoting the development of the global satellite data services industry by analyzing the startup landscape. Based on the analysis of startup data, such as number of startups, market segment, and funding amount, we examined the paradigm shift in the global satellite data services market, particularly its convergence with other market segments. To this end, we derived the cumulative funding-convergence dynamics matrix, which classifies the converging areas into four quadrants by considering the growth rate of converging segments and the cumulative funding amount. In this way, we can specify converging areas in the satellite data services market that bear potential importance for the creation of new markets. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the advancement of the satellite data services industry and facilitate the exploration of new market opportunities. Furthermore, they can serve as a valuable reference for policy makers, industry stakeholders, government officials, and researchers involved in the satellite data services industry in capitalizing on the emerging space economy.
