  • Using electrochromic devices (ECD), smart window films that can change the colors from tinted state into transparent state by applying an external voltage were manufactured. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film was used as a substrate instead of conventional glass, and ECD modules having a total thickness of about 50 ㎛ were manufactured by sequentially introducing an ITO/Ag/ITO electrode layer, a WO3/TIC2 organic discoloration layer, and a Nafion fluorine electrolyte layer. Through a series of sputtering, bar coating, and thermal compression processes, a large scale smart window with a horizontal and vertical length of more than 80 mm was manufactured. When DC 3.5 V was applied, the transmittance decreased from 54 % to 24 % and moreover the color change could be confirmed even with the naked eye. Reversible color change capability at low external voltage implies that external sunlight can be selectively blocked which is effective in terms of energy saving.

  • In this study, ITO thin films were fabricated on a glass substrate at different thicknesses without introducing oxygen using RF sputtering system. The structural, electrical, and optical properties were evaluated at various thicknesses ranging from 50 to 300 mm. As the thickness of deposited ITO thin film become thicker from 50 to 100 mm, carrier concentration, mobility, and band gap energy also increased while the resistivity and transmittance decreased in the visible light region. When the film thickness increased from 100 to 300 mm, the carrier concentration, mobility, and band gap energy decreased while the resistivity and transmittance increased. The optimum electrical properties were obtained for the ITO film 100 nm. After optimizing the thickness, the ITO thin films were post-annealed at different temperatures ranging from 100 to 300℃. As the annealing temperature increased, the ITO crystal phase became clearer and the grain size also increased. In particular, the ITO thin film annealed at 300℃ indicated high carrier concentration (4.32 × 1021 cm-3), mobility (9.01 cm2/V·s) and low resistivity (6.22 × 10-4 Ω·cm). This means that the optimal post-annealing temperature is 300℃ and this ITO thin film is suitable for use in solar cells and display application.

  • The effects of annealing temperature on the optical and electrical properties of BZO thin films, grown on glass substrate, have been investigated. Analysis of the XRD shows that regardless of the annealing temperature, all BZO thin films indicate the c-axis orientation. The full width of half maximum (FWHM) decreases from 1.65 to 1.07° as the annealing temperature increases from 400 to 600℃. The average transmittance in the visible light region showed a high value of 85% without significantly affecting the annealing temperature. The results of Hall effect measurements indicate that the carrier concentration and mobility increased and the resistivity decreased as the annealing temperature increased. The resistivity and the carrier concentration of the BZO thin films annealed 600℃ were 9.75×10-2 Ω·cm and 4.21×1019 cm-3 respectively, showing the best value. The optimization of deposition and annealing conditions will certainly make the BZO thin films promising materials for the application to the next generation of optoelectronic devices.

  • The potential polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA)-producing bacteria, Bacillus megaterium PP-10, was successfully isolated and studied its feasibility for utilization of pineapple peel waste (PPW) as a cheap carbon substrate. The PPW was pretreated with 1% (v/v) H2SO4 under steam sterilization and about 26.4 g/l of total reducing sugar (TRS) in pineapple peel hydrolysate (PPH) was generated and main fermentable sugars were glucose and fructose. A maximum cell growth and PHA concentration of 3.63 ± 0.07 g/l and 1.98 ± 0.09 g/l (about 54.58 ± 2.39%DCW) were received in only 12 h when grown in PPH. Interestingly, PHA productivity and biomass yield (Yx/s) in PPH was about 4 times and 1.5 times higher than in glucose. To achieve the highest DCW and PHA production, the optimal culture conditions e.g. carbon to nitrogen ratios of 40 mole/mole, incubation temperature at 35℃ and shaking speed of 200 rpm were performed and a maximum DCW up to 4.24 ± 0.04 g/l and PHA concentration of 2.68 ± 0.02 g/l (61% DCW) were obtained. The produced PHA was further examined its monomer composition and found to contain only 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB). This finding corresponded with the presence of class IV PHA synthase gene. Finally, certain thermal properties of the produced PHA i.e. the melting temperature (Tm) and the glass transition temperature (Tg) were about 176℃ and -4℃, respectively whereas the Mw was about 1.07 KDa ; therefore, the newly isolated B. megaterium PP-10 is a promising bacterial candidate for the efficient conversion of low-cost PPH to PHA.

  • This paper presents a novel fabrication process for a tapered hollow metallic microneedle array using backside exposure of SU-8, and analytic solutions of critical buckling of a tapered hollow microneedle. An SU-8 meta was formed on a Pyrex glass substrate and another SU-8 layer, which was spun on top of the SU-8 mesa, was exposed through the backside of the glass substrate. An array of SU-8 tapered pillar structures. with angles in the range of $3.1^{\circ}{\sim}5^{\circ}$ was formed on top of the SU-8 mesa. Conformal electrodeposition of metal was carried out followed by a mechanical polishing using a pianarizing polymeric layer. All organic layers were then removed to create a metallic hollow microneedle array with a fluidic reservoir on the backside. Both $200{\mu}m\;and\;400{\mu}m$ tall, 10 by 10 arrays of metallic microneedles with inner diameters of the tip in the range of $33.6{\sim}101\;{\mu}m$ and wall thickness of $10{\mu}m\;-\;20{\mu}m$ were fabricated. Analytic solutions of the critical buckling of arbitrary-angled truncated cone-shaped columns are also presented. It was found that a single $400{\mu}m$ tall hollow cylindrical microneedle made of electroplated nickel with a wall thickness of $20{\mu}m$, a tapered angle of $3.08^{\circ}$ and a tip inner diameter of $33.6{\mu}m$ has a critical buckling force of 1.8 N. This analytic solution can be used for square or rectangular cross-sectioned column structures with proper modifications.

  • Statement of problem: All-ceramic restorations have been advocated for superior esthetics. Various post and core systems have been used to improve the strength of damaged teeth, but it is unclear whether they affect the final shade of finished all-ceramic restorations. Purpose: The influence of different types of post and core systems on light transmission through all-ceramic crowns was assessed by spectrophotometric analysis. Also the masking effect of different thickness of ceramic ingot was evaluated. Material and Methods : Forty-five sample disks (15mm in diameter) at several thickness(1.0, 1.5, 2.0mm) and value(shade 100, 200, 300) were made in heat pressed ceramic(IPS-Empress). Background specimens simulating gold-alloy cast posts(Type III casting gold alloy), metal posts(Ni-Cr casting alloy) and ceramic posts(CosmoPost) were fabrica-ted. Resin composite(Z250, A3 shade) was used as a tooth substrate reference. For each combination, the change in color was measured with a spectrophotometer. Readings were performed for 2 conditions (1) ability of ceramic to mask the core in relation to its thickness(1.0, 1.5, or 2.0mm) ; (2) influence of post and core types on the final color of the ceramic. Data were recorded according to the CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ systems and color difference($\Delta$E) was calculated. Results: 100 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, $\Delta$E value for ceramic post larger than 1 but $\Delta$E value for metal and gold post was larger than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5mm, only $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2, and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 2. 200 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, $\Delta$E value for ceramic post was smaller than 1 but $\Delta$E value for metal and gold post was larger than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5 mm, only the $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2, and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. 300 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, only $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2 and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. Conclusion: The final esthetic result of the IPS-Empress glass-ceramic restoration was not affected by the presence of different core materials when the thickness was more than 2.0 mm. When ceramic thickness decreases to 1.5mm, it is advised to take the substrate aspects into consideration. If the ceramic thickness is less than 1.0mm, using the tooth color matched substrate is strongly recommended.

  • The peroxo-polytungstic acid was formed by the direct reaction of tungsten powder with the hydrogen peroxide solution. Peroxo-polytungstic powder were prepared by rotary evaporator using the fabricated on to ITO coated glass as substrate by dip-coating method using $2g/10mL(W-IPA/H_2O)$ sol solution. A substrate was dipped into the sol solution and after a meniscus had settled, the substrate was withdrawn at a constant rate of the 3mm/sec. Thicker layer could be built up by repeated dipping/post-treatment 15 times cycles. The layers dried at the temperature of $65{\sim}70^{\circ}C$ during the withdrawn process, and then tungsten oxides thin film was formed by final heating treatment at the temperature of $230{\sim}240^{\circ}C$ for 30min. A linear rotation between the thickness of thin film and the number of dipping/post-treatment cycles for tungsten oxides thin films made by dip-coating was found. The thickness of thin film had $60{\AA}$ after one dipping. From the patterns of XRD, the structure of tungsten oxides thin film identified as amorphous one and from the photographs of SEM, the defects and the moderate cracks were observed on the tungsten oxides thin film, but the homogeneous surface of thin films were mostly appeared. The electrochemical characteristic of the $ITO/WO_3$ thin film electrode were confirmed by the cyclic voltammetry and the cathodic Tafel polaization method. The coloring bleaching processes were clearly repeated up to several hundreds cycles by multiple cyclic voltammetry, but the dissolved phenomenon of thin film revealed in $H_2SO_4$ solution was observed due to the decrease of the current densities. The diffusion coefficient was calculated from irreversible Randles-Sevick equation from the data obtained by the cyclic voltammetry with various scan rates.

  • An integral imaging system enabling enhanced depth of field by incorporating a pair of liquid-crystal (LC) lens arrays was proposed and demonstrated. The lens arrays exhibit two different refractive indexes depending on the light polarization. The proposed LC lens array I and II were implemented by depositing a ZLI-4119 LC and an E-7 LC, respectively, on top of a lens-array substrate in glass. When the two LC lens arrays were aligned appropriately, a birefringence was obtained for a specific light polarization in such a way that the incoming light sees different refractive indexes for them. As a result, the focal length associated with the imaging system utilizing the LC lens arrays was adaptively varied, thereby enhancing the depth of field for the image reconstruction. We have theoretically analyzed the proposed integral imaging system with the $LightTools^{(R)}$ to confirm that the focal length could be adjusted with the help of the birefringent lens array. Finally the proposed imaging system successfully reconstructed the objects. The birefringent lens array employing the ZLI-4119 LC produced a real image with the focal length of 680 mm, while the other using the E-7 LC yielded a virtual image with the focal length of -29 mm.

  • Negative-temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistors based on nickel manganite spinel ($NiMn_2O_4$) are widely used for many applications, such as sensors and temperature compensators, due to their good thermistor characteristics and stabilities. However, to achieve thermistors with a high NTC B constant, which is an important figure of merit pertaining to the degree of temperature sensitivity, the activation energy should be high such that high resistivity at ambient temperatures results. To obtain a high B constant and low resistivity, Al and Si modified spinel structured $Ni_{0.6}Si_{0.2}Al_{0.6}Mn_{1.6}O_4$ hybrid thick films with the conducting metal oxide of $LaNiO_3$ were fabricated on a glass substrate by aerosol deposition at room temperature (RT). The NTC-$LaNiO_3$ hybrid thick films showed resistivity as low as < $100k{\Omega}\;cm$ at $90^{\circ}C$, which is one or two orders of magnitude lower than that of the monolithic NTC films, while retaining a high B constant of $NiMn_2O_4$ of over 5500 K when 20 wt% $LaNiO_3$ was added without a post-thermal treatment. These phenomena are explained by the percolation threshold mechanism.

  • Red-emitting $Eu^{3+}$-activated $(Y_{0.95-x}Al_x)VO_4$ (0 < x $\leq$ 0.12) nanophosphors with the particle size of ~30 nm and the high crystallinity have been successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction. In the synthetic process, deionized water as a solvent and ethylene glycol as a capping agent were used. The crystalline phase, particle morphology, and the photoluminescence properties of the excitation spectrum, emission intensity, color coordinates and decay time, of the prepared $(Y_{0.95-x}Al_x)VO_4:Eu^{3+}$ nanophosphors were compared with those of the $YVO_4:Eu^{3+}$. Under 147 nm excitation, $(Y_{0.95-x}Al_x)VO_4$ nanophosphors showed strong red luminescence due to the $^5D_0-^7F_2$ transition of $Eu^{3+}$ at 619 nm. The luminescence intensity of $YVO_4:Eu^{3+}$ enhanced with partial substitution of $Al^{3+}$ for $Y^{3+}$ and the maximum emission intensity was accomplished at the $Al^{3+}$ content of 10 mol%. By the addition of $Al^{3+}$, decay time of the $(Y,Al)VO_4:Eu^{3+}$ nanophosphor was decreased in comparison with that of the $YVO_4:Eu^{3+}$ nanophosphor. Also, the substitution of $Al^{3+}$ for $Y^{3+}$ invited the improvement of color coordinates due to the increase of R/O ratio in emission intensity. For the formation of transparent layer, the red nanophosphors were fabricated to the paste with ethyl celluloses, anhydrous terpineol, ethanol and deionized water. By screen printing method, a transparent red phosphor layer was formed onto a glass substrate from the paste. The transparent red phosphor layer exhibited the red emission at 619 nm under 147 nm excitation and the transmittance of ~80% at 600 nm.
