  • In this study, a mixture of polypropylene fibers and glass fibers were used to weave polypropylene/glass fiber-reinforced composite panels with characteristics such as highly elongated short fibers, high ductility, anti-fouling, and hydrophobicity as a result of a directional property. Mechanical and environmental tests were carried out with specimens fabricated with this composite panel, and its applicability to shipbuilding and ocean leisure industries was evaluated through a comparison with existing glass fiber-reinforced composite materials. The results of this experiment verified the excellence of the polypropylene/glass-mixed woven fiber-reinforced composite material compared to the existing glass fiber-reinforced composite material. However, the forming process needs to be changed to improve the weak interfacial bonding, and the properties of the composite material itself could be improved through mixed weaving with other fibers after development. Maximizing of the advantages of the polypropylene fibers and overcoming their shortcomings will improve their applicability to the shipbuilding, ocean leisure, and other industries, and increase the value of polypropylene fibers in the composite material market.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the internal and external factors affecting external strength of the 3-layer polymer composite pipes made of polymer mortar and fiber-glass reinforced plastic. Twenty four sandwich type 3-layer polymer composite pipes were made of polymer mortar and fiber-glass reinforced plastic by centrifugal method. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects the of polymer mortar thickness for and core fiber-glass contents per unit area on external strength of 3-layer polymer composite pipes. For the more economical and practical design of 3-layer polymer composite pipe, further study should be done for the various polymer mortar, fiber-glass and different ratio of the inside/outside FRP thickness.

  • Today, carbon fibers are used as heating elements. Carbon fibers are generally used to reinforce composite materials because they are lightweight and have a high strength and modulus. Carbon fiber reinforced composite materials are used for aerospace, automobile, and wind turbine blade applications. This work explored the possibility of using carbon fiber reinforced composite materials as self heating materials. The temperatures of the carbon fiber reinforced composites were measured. These results verified that the carbon fiber reinforced composite materials could be used as heating elements. A glass fiber was laminated using various methods. The thermal characteristics of the composites were evaluated. This confirmed that the generation of heat varied according to the lamination thicknesses of the carbon fiber and glass fiber. As the number of carbon fiber laminations increased, the heat-generating temperature increased. In contrast, as the number of glass fiber laminations increased, the amount of heat decreased. The generation of heat and ability to remain warm could be controlled by controlling the carbon fiber and glass fiber laminations.

  • The continuous glass fiber reinforced poly-lactic acid (PLA) composite was manufactured by direct melt impregnation. The mechanical and thermal properties of continuous glass fiber reinforced PLA composite were observed. Measured properties were compared with the reference values of neat PLA and the injection molded glass fiber/ PLA composite. The continuous glass fiber reinforced PLA composite having a fiber volume fraction of 27.7% shows enhanced tensile strength of 331.1 MPa, flexural strength of 528.6 MPa, and flexural modulus of 24.0 GPa. The enhanced heat deflection temperature (HDT) and the increased cystallinity were also observed. The degree of impregnation as a function of pulling speed was also assessed. The degree of impregnation at the pulling speed of 5 m/min was over 90% in this research.

  • The structural characteristics of concrete-filled glass fiber reinforced polymer tubes were studied. The concept of concrete-filled composite columns was introduced to overcome the corrosion problems associated with steel and concrete piles under severe environments. Other benefits of composite columns include low maintenance cost, high earthquake resistance, and long expected endurance period. Several experiments were conducted; 1) compression test for short-length composite columns, 2) uniaxial compression tests on a total of 7 columns with various slenderness ratios. Short-length columns give higher strength and ductility revealing high confinement action in concrete. Failure strengths, failure patterns, confinement effects, and stress-strains relations were analyzed for slender columns. Current study will show the feasibility of concrete-filled glass fiber reinforced polymer composite columns in corrosive environments, and will provide an experimental database for columns that are externally reinforced by multidirectional fibers.

  • In this study, twelve different glass fiber reinforced polymer concrete composite panel specimens with various rib heights and tensile side and reinforced side thickness were produced, and the flexural tests were conducted to figure out the effect of The height and thickness influencing on the flexural properties of composite panel. Test results of the study are presented. Especially, a prediction equation of the ultimate moment based on the strength design method agrees well with the test results, and it is thought to be useful for the corresponding design of cross-section according to various spans as the glass fiber reinforced polymer concrete composite panel is applied for a permanent mold.

  • Today fiber composite materials are routinely used in such wide applications as ships automobiles aircraft space vehi-cles containers sporting goods and appliances. The current knowledge of machining glass fiber reinforced polyester com-posites unfortunately is inadequate for its optimum utilization in many applications. Therefore This paper deals with drilling characteristic of glass fiber reinforced polyester composites. In the drilling of glass fiber reinforced polyester the quality of the cut surfaces is strongly dependent on the drilling parameters. drilling tests were carried out on glass fiber reinforced polyester using standard HSS tools. The material containing random chopped strand fibers and woven roving was fabricated by hand lay-up The entrance and exit surface of the holes was examined. The cutting force was also mea-sured to analyze the drilling characteristics,.

  • The cell modeling homogenization method to derive the constitutive equation considering the microstructures of the fiber reinforced composites has been previously developed for composites with simple microstructures such as 2D plane composites and 3D rectangular shaped composites. Here, the method has been further extended for 3D circular braided composites, utilizing B-spline curves to properly describe the more complex geometry of 3D braided composites. For verification purposes, the method has been applied for orthotropic elastic properties of the 3D circular braided glass fiber reinforced composite, in particular for the tensile property. Prepregs of the specimen have been fabricated using the 3D braiding machine through RTM (resin transfer molding) with epoxy as a matrix. Experimentally measured uniaxial tensile properties agreed well with predicted values obtained fer two volume fractions.

  • To improve the mechanical properties of glass-fiber-reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites through interfacial adhesion control between the PP matrix and glass fiber, the surface of the glass fiber was modified with PP-graft-maleic anhydride (MAPP). Surface modification of the glass fiber was carried out through the well-known hydrolysis-condensation reaction using 3-aminopropyltriethoxy silane, and then subsequently treated with MAPP to produce the desired MAPP-anchored glass fiber (MAPP-a-GF). The glass-fiber-reinforced PP composites were prepared by typical melt-mixing technique. The effect of chemical modification of the glass fiber surface on the mechanical properties of composites was investigated. The resulting mechanical and morphological properties showed improved interfacial adhesion between the MAPP-a-GF and PP matrix in the composites.
