Glass composites containing ceramic fiber have been developed for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) seals. Effect of glass type, loading pressure and thermal cycle the leak rates of composite seals was investigated. Seal performance of two commercial glasses was compared with that of $SiO_2BaO-B_2O_3$ glass synthesized in this work. The leak rate for seals made of pyrex(R) increases from $\~0.0005\;to\;\~0.004sccm/cm$ as the gas pressure increases from 10 to 50 kPa. The soda lime silicate glass seal shows the leak rate two times higher than the one made of pyrex(R) or $SiO_2BaO-B_2O_3$ glass. The viscosity of glass at the seal test temperature is presumed to affect the leak rate of the glass seal. As the applied loading pressure increases from 0.4 to 0.8 MPa at $750^{\circ}C$, the leak rate decreases from 0.038 to 0.024 sccm/cm for composite seals. It has been found that during 50 thermal cycles between $450^{\circ}C\;to\;700^{\circ}C$ leak rates remained almost constant, ranging from 0.025 to 0.03sccm/cm. The results showed an excellent thermal cycle stability as well as sealability of the glass matrix ceramic fiber composite seals.

This paper presents a study on the permittivities of the E-glass fabric/epoxy composite laminates containing carbon black dispersions at microwave frequency. Measurement showed that the complex permittivities of the composites depend strongly on the natures and concentrations of the carbon black dispersion. A new scheme to obtain a mixing law for the estimation of complex permittivity is proposed. The experimental values of the complex permittivities were compared to those calculated. Simultaneously, the complex permittivity of carbon black itself was also calculated by the scheme.

The main objectives of this research work are to develop conductive glass fiber woven roving and carbon fiber unidirectional fabric composite materials and to determine their electromagnetic shielding effectiveness(EMSE). Epoxy is the matrix phase and glass, carbon fiber are the reinforcement phase of the composite material. Carbon black are incorporated as conductive fillers to provide the electromagnetic shielding properties of the composite material. The amount of carbon black in the composite material is varied by changing the carbon black composition, woven roving and unidirectional (fabric) structure. The EMSE of various fabric composites is measured in the frequency range from 300MHz to 800MHz. The variations of EMSE of woven roving and unidirectional composites with fabric structure, metal powder composite are described. Suitability of conductive fabric composites for electromagnetic shielding applications is also discussed.
Hertzian indentation tests with sphere indenters were used to study the mechanical properties of glass-in-filtrated alumina and spinel composites and evaluated the effect of preform microstructure and evaluated the effect of preform microstructure and glass con-tents on contanct damage and strength. The spinel composite showed more brittle behavior than the alumina composite which is verified from indentation stress-strain curve cone cracks and quasi-plastic deformation developed at subsurface. Failure originated from either cone cracks(brittle mode) or deformation zone(quasi-plastic mode) above critical load for cracking(Pc) and yield ({{{{ {P }_{Y } }}) with the brittle mode more dominant in the spinels and the quasi-plastic mode more dominant in the aluminas. Even though brittle mode was dominant in the spinel composites the strength degradation from accumulation of damage above these critical loads was conspicuously small suggesting that the glass-infiltrated composites should be highly damage tolerant to the blunt contacts.
The tensile bond strength to dentin was measured for three glass-ionomer cement and composite resin combinations: two light-curing glass-ionomer cements(Vitrebond and XR - Ionomer) and one traditional glass - ionomer cement(Ketac - Bond), two adhesive systems(Scotchbond, and XR - Bonding System), and a corresponding composite resin. The bond strength of this "sandwich" was also compared with that of the same cements used in bulk. Vitredbond showed a significantly higher bond strength in bulk than did the other two cements. Of the sandwiches, the XR - Iomomer and XR - Bond combination showed a bond strength significantly higher than that of the Vitrebond and Scotchbond or Ketac- bond and Scotchbond combination. The fracture of the bond was mainly adhesive for Vitrebond, cohesive for XR - Ionomer when used in bulk and adhesive - cohesive when used in a sandwich, and cohesive for Ketac-Bond.
In liquid composite molding (LCM), composites are produced by impregnation of a dry preform with liquid resin. The resin flow through the preform is usually described by Darcy's law and the permeability tensor must be obtained for filling analysis. While the resin flow in the thickness direction can be neglected for thin parts, the resin flow in the transverse direction is important for thicker parts. However, the transverse permeability of the preform has not been investigated frequently. In this study, the transverse permeability was measured experimentally for five different fiber preforms. In order to verify the experimental results, the measured transverse permeability was compared with numerical results. Five different fiber mats were used in this study: glass fiber woven fabric, aramid fiber woven fabric, glass fiber random mat, glass fiber braided preform, and glass/aramid hybrid braided preform. The anisotropic braided preforms were manufactured by using a three dimensional braiding machine. The pressure was measured at the inlet and outlet positions with pressure transducers.

In this study, the fatigue characteristics and life of a woven glass fabric/epoxy laminate composite applied to railway vehicles was evaluated. The fatigue test was conducted using a tension-tension load with a stress ratio R of 0.1 and frequency of 5 Hz. Two types of woven glass fabric/epoxy laminate composite was used in the fatigue test: with and without carbon/epoxy ply reinforcement. In addition, the fatigue life of the woven glass fabric/epoxy laminate composite was compared with that of aluminum 6005, which is used in the car body and underframe structures of railway vehicles. The test results showed that the failure strength and life of the woven glass fabric/epoxy laminate composite reinforced with three carbon/epoxy plies had a remarkable improvement compared with that of the bare specimen without reinforcement.
Composite resin and glass-ionomer cement can be used for the purpose of repair of defective amalgam restoration. The purpose of this study was to evaluate of shear bond strength of esthetic restorative materials to dental amalgam. The materials used in this study were Photo Clearfil Bright(light curing composite resin), Clearfil F II(chemical curing composite resin), Fuji II LC(light curing glass-ionomer cement), Fuji II (chemical curing glass-ionomer cement), All-Bond 2(intermediary), and Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (intermediary). A total of 120 acrylic cylinders with amalgam were divided into 8 groups After amalgam condensation, all specimens were stored for 48 hours in water at $37^{\circ}C$ and tested with Instron universal testing machine between amalgam and composite resins and glass-ionomer cements. The data were analyzes statiscally by ANOVA and Duncan test. The following results obtained ; 1. The shear bond strength of bonded composite resin to amalgam was higher than bonded glass-ionomer cement(P<.001). 2. The group 4 had highest shear bond strength with 15.45kgf/$cm^2$ and the group 5 had lowest shear bond strenght with 3.26kgf/$cm^2$(P<.001). 3. In the group 3, 4, 5, 6, the group 3, 4 with All-Bond 2 had higher shear bond strength than the group 5, 6 with Scotch bond MP both in light-curing and in chemical curing. 4. Both in composite resin and glass-ionomer cement, chemical curing materials had higher shear bond stength than light curing materials(P<.001).
The purpose of this study was to observe the microleakage of composite resin filling using several glass ionomer cements. The Class V cavities of eighty noncarious human molars were prepared at the cementoenamel juction on the facial and lingual surfaces of each tooth with a No.330 carbide bur in a high speed handpiece. The cavity dimensions were $3.0{\pm}0.5mm$ wide, $2.0{\pm}0.5mm$ high, and $1.5{\pm}0.5mm$ deep and all enamel cavosurface margins were beveled with a No.558 carbide bur in low speed handpiece. The bevel was approximately $45^{\circ}$ and 0.5-1.0mm in width. A total of the 160 cavities was divided into four groups, and then 144 cavities among them were three experimental groups and remaining sixteen cavities were control group. All of the prepared cavities were restored as follows: group 1 : Preparations were restored with there three glass ionomer cements. group 2 : Preparations were restored with a composite resin with three glass ionomer cement bases placed $0.2{\pm}0.1mm$ short of the cavosurface margin. group 3 : Preparations were restored with a composite resin with three glass ionomer cement bases extened to the cavosurface margin. group 4 : As control group, preparations were restored with a composite resin, PALFIQUE. The specimens were then thermocycled in a range of $6^{\circ}C-60^{\circ}C$ and immersed in a bath of 2.0% aqueous basic fuchsin solution for 24 hours. Dye penetration was read on a scale of 0 to 4 by Tani and Buonocore's method. The following conclusions were derived from the results obtained; 1. All groups showed significantly more leakage at the gingival margins than at the occlusal margins(p<0.0005). 2. At the gingival margins, group 1 showed less leakage than group 3(p<0.01) and group 4(p<0.0005), while group 3 exhibited less leakage than group 2(p<0.01) and group 4(p<0.0005). 3. At the occlusal margins, group 4 showed less leakage than group 3(p<0.1) and group 1(p<0.005), while group 3 exhibited less leakage than group 2(p>0.1) and group 1(p<0.025).
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to compare the flexural strength of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and bis-acryl composite resin reinforced with polyethylene and glass fibers. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three groups of rectangular test specimens (n = 15) of each of the two resin/fiber reinforcement were prepared for flexural strength test and unreinforced group served as the control. Specimens were loaded in a universal testing machine until fracture. The mean flexural strengths (MPa) was compared by one way ANOVA test, followed by Scheffe analysis, using a significance level of 0.05. Flexural strength between fiber-reinforced resin groups were compared by independent samples t-test. RESULTS. For control groups, the flexural strength for PMMA (215.53 MPa) was significantly lower than for bis-acryl composite resin (240.09 MPa). Glass fiber reinforcement produced significantly higher flexural strength for both PMMA (267.01 MPa) and bis-acryl composite resin (305.65 MPa), but the polyethylene fibers showed no significant difference (PMMA resin-218.55 MPa and bis-acryl composite resin-241.66 MPa). Among the reinforced groups, silane impregnated glass fibers showed highest flexural strength for bis-acryl composite resin (305.65 MPa). CONCLUSION. Of two fiber reinforcement methods evaluated, glass fiber reinforcement for the PMMA resin and bis-acryl composite resin materials produced highest flexural strength. Clinical implications. On the basis of this in-vitro study, the use of glass and polyethylene fibers may be an effective way to reinforce provisional restorative resins. When esthetics and space are of concern, glass fiber seems to be the most appropriate method for reinforcing provisional restorative resins.
