  • Principle of foamed glass manufacturing process first starts with putting vitreous material powder into a mold. After the foaming calcination, foamed body should be annealed after separation from the mold. For this reason, existing manufacturing process could not be a continuous type process. In this study, in order to develop a continuous production process of foamed glass, the possibility of new foam glass manufacturing process was investigated by foaming calcination of the compact body obtained from compression-molding of vitreous raw materials in stead of using a mold. Through the experimental results of the foaming calcination of the compact body with adding various foaming agents such as $Na_2CO_3$, $CaCO_3$ and petroleum coke, into hydrated soda-lime vitreous raw materials, it was shown that developing a continuous process without using any molds for manufacturing foamed glass would be possible.

  • This study explores the compression molding of diffractive-aspheric lenses using GeSbSe chalcogenide glasses. A mold core with diffractive structure was prepared and a chalcogenide glass lens was molded at various temperatures using the corresponding core. The effect of molding temperature on the transcription characteristics of diffractive structure was examined, by measuring and comparing the diffractive structure between the mold core and the molded chalcogenide glass lens using a microscope and a white light interferometer. In addition, the applicability of the molded lens for thermal imaging was evaluated, by measuring the form error.

  • Aspheric lenses used in the thermal imaging are typically fabricated using expensive single-crystal materials (Ge and ZnS, etc.) by the costly single point diamond turning (SPDT) process. As a potential solution to reduce cost, compression molding method using chalcogenide glass has been attracted to fabricate IR optic. Thermal deformation of a molded lens should be compensated to fabricate chalcogenide aspheric lens with form accuracy of the submicron-order. The thermal deformation phenomenon of molded lens was analyzed ant then compensation using mold iteration process is followed to fabricate the high accuracy optic. Consequently, it is obvious that compensation of thermal deformation is critical and useful enough to be adopted to fabricate the lens by molding method.

  • Most plastics products are being produced by injection molding process. However, mold shrinkage is inevitable in injection molding process and it deteriorates dimensional quality through deflections and warpages. Mold shrinkage depends upon the material property of resin as well as injection molding condition. In this study, material property of resin has been predicted for glass fiber reinforced polycarbonate to control the warpage, and computer simulation of injection molding has been performed using predicted property. It was observed that the deflection of part decreased by the glass fiber reinforced resin. In order to verify the validity of this method and confidence of results, experiments of injection molding were performed. The results of experiments and computer simulations showed good agreement in their tendency of deflections. Consequently, it was concluded that the method of designing the material property of resin conducted in this study can be utilized to control the dimensional accuracy of injection molded products.

  • The rapid thermal response(RTR) molding is a novel process developed to raise the temperature of mold surface rapidly in the injection stage and then cool rapidly to the ejection temperature by air or water. The objectives of this paper are to investigate the effect of mold temperature, pressure and thickness of micro pattern molding and to provide a optimization of RTR injection molding for micro pattern from Moldflow simulation. Optimal minimum temperature and pressure was found without shortcut according to thickness. Filling percentage was influenced by glass transition temperature with the kinds of resin. Optimal temperature is slightly higher than glass transition temperature irrespectively of pressure, thickness, the kinds of resin in the micro pattern molding.

  • Dicyclopentadiene is a low viscosity resin which forms a poly-dicyclopentadiene rapidly through ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). This poly-dicyclopentadiene has outstanding properties of low-temperature, water and impact resistances. Due to these advantages, military and offshore structures try to apply the DCPD composites by using liquid composite molding process. In this study, 14%, 38% volume fraction fiber glass strand mat reinforced p-DCPD composites processed by structural reaction injection molding (S-RIM) which has resin-catalsyt mixing head and glass fiber preform in the mold. Additionally, S-RIM numerical analysis was conducted to predict the process time depending on fiber volume fraction and mold temperature. The process time is shorter when it has the lower fiber volume fraction or the higher mold temperature. At higher mold temperature, it is necessary to set the maximum mold temperature considering the resin curing time.

  • Recently, aspheric glass lens molding core is fabricated with tungsten carbide(WC). If molding core is fabricated with silicon carbide(SiC), SiC coating process, which must be carried out before the Diamond-Like Carbon(DLC) coating can be eliminated and thus, manufacturing time and cost can be reduced. Diamond Like Carbon(DLC) is being researched in various fields because of its high hardness, high elasticity, high durability, and chemical stability and is used extensively in several industrial fields. Especially, the DLC coating of the molding core surface used in the fabrication of a glass lens is an important technical field, which affects the improvement of the demolding performance between the lens and molding core during the molding process and the molding core lifetime. Because SiC is a material of high hardness and high brittleness, it can crack or chip during grinding. It is, however, widely used in many fields because of its superior mechanical properties. In this paper, the grinding condition for silicon carbide(SiC) was developed under the grinding condition of tungsten carbide. A silicon carbide molding core was fabricated under this grinding condition. The measurement results of the SiC molding core were as follows: PV of 0.155 ${\mu}m$(apheric surface) and 0.094 ${\mu}m$(plane surface), Ra of 5.3 nm(aspheric surface) and 5.5 nm(plane surface).

  • Aspheric glass lens have recently been used in camera phone module because they are more effective than spherical ones. In this paper, the grinding condition of the tungsten carbide molding core has been found after applying DOE to the development of the aspheric glass lens for the 3 Megapixel and 2.5x camera-phone module. Also, the ultra precision grinding process was investigated under this condition by experiment. Re-Ir coating was applied on the ground surface of the tungsten carbide molding core. The influence of Re-Ir coating on the form accuracy and surface roughness of molding core was compared and evaluated. The form accuracy and surface roughness of the molding core were improved by application of Re-Ir coating on the surface of the tungsten carbide molding core.

  • In comparison with thermosetting rubber, thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) has various advantages such as simple processing, short cycle time and recycling of scrap. These advantages can lead to development of the high value-added rubber products due to reduction of the waste material, manufacturing cost and the defected product. This article involves a dynamic vulcanization method for EPDM/polypropylene blend, and the manufacturing of a fixed glass weather-strip by glass insert molding method using the blend. In order to investigate mechanical properties of the product, tensile strength, elongation, hardness and specific gravity were measured. Also morphological study was carried out using SEM. Developments of an efficient system of production and automatic process by molding of TPE and glass simultaneously are expected.
