  • In this study, the characteristic of an amorphous fishing weight material according to controlling the alloy type and alloy composition of the glass forming agent added in PbO2 oxide was investigated. According to the experimental, when the glass forming agent of 15wt%SiO2-1wt%MgO content was added in β-PbO2, an amorphous fishing weight substitute having the lowest friction coefficient, excellent corrosion resistance and durability was obtained. The cell number of PbO2-15wt%SiO2-1wt%MgO sample incubated in cell culture fluid tended to hardly decrease even after a lapse of 24 hours, It means that the fabricated PbO2-15wt%SiO2-1wt%MgO sample is significantly less-toxic and harmless to the human body, unlikely to metallic lead. It is considered that an fabricated amorphous fishing weight substitute proved to have a potential as an eco-friendly material with little marine pollution.

  • This research scrutinizes the mechanical characteristics of ultra-high strength concrete using oxide graphene nanoplatelet(GO) and hollow glass powder(HGP). The investigation covered various mechanical attributes, including workability, compression strength, tensile strength, water resistance, and the internal microstructure of standard concrete. Our findings reveal that workability experiences a significant improvement with the incorporation of a minimal amount of HGP, and an increase was also observed in tensile strength and water resistance. It was confirmed that cGO(C company GO) and HGP demonstrated commendable dispersion and the pore volume exhibited a reduction of more than 20%. The potential of cGO and HGP to substitute silica fume(SF) was also explored. Consequently, it was found that both workability and mechanical properties were enhanced in the absence of SF when cGO and HGP were used. This finding implies that the utilization of these novel materials could potentially modify conventional methods of concrete manufacturing.

  • This research delves into the fabrication of an ultra-high-strength concrete, enriched with oxidized graphene nanoplatelet(GO) and hollow glass powder(HGP), notably eschewing the conventional inclusion of silica fume(SF). The primary objective was to scrutinize the autogenous shrinkage characteristics of this innovative formulation. It was discerned that the NewMix specimen, which incorporated the cGO(sourced from Company C) and HGP, and intentionally bypassed SF, showcased a commendable 13% reduction in autogenous shrinkage relative to the benchmark(Ref) specimenthat incorporated SF. Moreover, the proclivity for crack formation owing to autogenous shrinkage in the NewMix was observed to manifested by NewMix at the juncture of cracking emerged as the apex value. Attributed to the expansive specific surface area and exemplary dispersibility of cGO, it was postulated that the concrete's pore structure benefitted from enhanced infill, leading to a reduction in autogenous shrinkage. Additionally, the cGO integration fortified the concrete's resistance to crack initiation. Consequently, such an enhancement is posied to be pivotal in mitigating crack propagation resulting from autogenous shrinkage in ultra-high-strength concrete.

  • Influences of ceramic filler types and dose on the sintering, phase evolution, and dielectric properties of ceramic/CaO-$Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ glass composites were investigated. All of the specimens were sintered at $900^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, which conditions are required by the lowtemperature co-firing ceramic (LTCC) technology. Ceramic fillers of $Al_2O_3,\;SiO_2$, kaolin, and wollastonite were used. The addition of $Al_2O_3$ filler yielded the crystalline phases of alumina and wollastonite, and the densification over 95% of the relative density was achieved up to 50 wt% addition of the filler. For the cases of the fillers of $SiO_2$, kaolin, and wollastonite, crystalline phases of quartz, mullite, and wollastonite formed, while the densification decreased monotonically with the filler addition. In overall, all the investigated fillers with 10 wt% addition resulted in a reasonable sintering (over 95 %) and low dielectric constants (less than 6), demonstrating the feasibility of the investigated composites for application to a LTCC substrate material with a low dielectric constant.

  • In this study, Fe-Ni slag, converter slag and dephosphorization slag generated from the steel industry, and fly ash or bottom ash from a power plant, were mixed at an appropriate mixing ratio and melted in a melting furnace in a mass-production process for glass ceramics. Then, glass-ceramic products, having a basalt composition with $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, CaO, MgO, and $Fe_2O_3$ components, were fabricated through casting and heat treatment process. Comparison was made of the samples before and after the modification of the process conditions. Glass-ceramic samples before and after the process modification were similar in chemical composition, but $Al_2O_3$ and $Na_2O$ contents were slightly higher in the samples before the modification. Before and after the process modification, it was confirmed that the sample had a melting temperature below $1250^{\circ}C$, and that pyroxene and diopside are the primary phases of the product. The crystallization temperature in the sample after modification was found to be higher than that in the sample before modification. The activation energy for crystallization was evaluated and found to be 467 kJ/mol for the sample before the process modification, and 337 kJ/mol for the sample after the process modification. The degree of crystallinity was evaluated and found to be 82 % before the process change and 87 % after the process change. Mechanical properties such as compressive strength and bending strength were evaluated and found to be excellent for the sample after process modification. In conclusion, the samples after the process modification were evaluated and found to have superior characteristics compared to those before the modification.

  • A series of $La_2O_3$-added zincborosilicate glasses was fabricated by systematically varying $La_2O_3$ addition up to 15mol% under the constraint of a ZnO:$B_2O_3$ ratio of 1:2. The degree of water leaching after ball milling of the prepared glasses in water medium was relatively quantified by the change in zinc peak intensity in energy dispersive spectroscopy. 8mol% of $La_2O_3$ was the most efficient addition in inhibiting the glass leaching by water. The role of $La_2O_3$ in inhibiting the leaching was explained in terms of change of structural units in the glass network. When the optimum 8mol% $La_2O_3$-added ZnO-$B_2O_3$ glass was used as sintering aid for $Al_2O_3$, the fabricated alumina-glass composite at $875^{\circ}C$ demonstrated dielectric constant of 6.11 and quality factor of 15470 GHz, indicating the potential of leaching-minimized $La_2O_3-ZnO-B_2O_3$ glass for application to low temperature co-firing ceramic technology.

  • Strengthened glass is widely used in the display industry for the smart phone and the tablet PC's, the market of which shows steady growth. The strengthened glass is prone to the fracture due to the machined surface defects such as crack and notch. The surface defects are caused mostly by the vibrations of the laser cutter. In this study, the vibrations of the laser cutter were investigated through the frequency response experiment and the computer simulation. The main reasons of the structural vibrations were analyzed, and further the design alterations were deduced and applied to the machine to check the effects of those alterations and to eventually improve the structural stability. The result shows that simple design modifications without major structural change can substantially suppress the vibrations, and improve the quality of the machined surface.

  • In this study, the glass fiber drawing from a silica preform in the furnace for the optical fiber manufacturing process is numerically simulated by considering the radiative heating of cylindrically shaped preform. The one-dimensional governing equations of the mass, momentum, and energy conservation for the heated and softened preform are solved as a set of the boundary value problems along with the radiative transfer approximation between the muffle tube and the deformed preform shape, while the furnace heating is modeled by prescribing the temperature distribution of muffle tube. The temperature-dependent viscosity of silica plays an important role in formation of preform neck-down profile when the glass fiber is drawn at high speed. The calculated neck-down profile of preform and the draw tension are found to be reasonable and comparable to the actual results observed in the optical fiber industry. This paper also presents the effects of key operating parameters such as the muffle tube temperature distribution and the fiber drawing speed on the preform neck-down profile and the draw tension. Draw tension varies drastically even with the small change of furnace heating conditions such as maximum heating temperature and heating width, and the fine adjustment of furnace heating is required in order to maintain the appropriate draw tension of 100~200 g.
