We investigated the influence of several processes, including the preparation of slurry and preform and the heat-treatment of the preform, on the properties of composites to fabricate the carbon-fiber reinforced glass composites having good mechanical properties. Cerander was determined to be the best binder among Cerander, Rhoplex and Elvacite 2045 by the dipping test and the binder within a preform could be completely eliminatd by burning out the specimen under 10-6 Torr at 400$^{\circ}C$ for more than 1h. The fracture behavior of a composite was largely dependent on the uniformity of carbon-fiber distribution within the composite and the heat-treatment condition of the composite. The higher the glass content, the more difficult to obtain uniform distribution of carbon-fiber. As the hot-pressing temperature increased, the densification process of the composite and the formation of pore due to oxidation of carbon fiber occurred competitively. But, above 1000$^{\circ}C$ the latter played a predominant role. We could fabricated the densest 15 vol.% carbon-fiber-content glass composite having the highest toughness and flexural strength of 250 MPa by hot-pressing under 15 MPa at 900$^{\circ}C$ for 30 min.
Materials, matrices mixed with various kinds of conductive or magnetic powder, such as ferrite, have been used as the electromagnetic wave absorbing ones, so called RAM(radar absorbing material). The structure that does not only have electromagnetic waves absorbing property like RAM but also supports loads is called RAS(radar absorbing structure). One of the existing manufacturing process of RAS is to compound with conductive powders the glass fiber-reinforced composite with good permeability and the ability to support loads. The process, however, causes a number of problems, such as the degradation in the mechanical properties of the composite, especially, interlamina shear strength. In this study, mechanical properties of glass fabric/epoxy composite containing 7wt% carbon black powders were measured and compared with pure glass fabric/epoxy composites.
The sliding friction and wear properties of mineral fiber reinforced composite(MF) and glass fiber reinforced composites(GF) are investigated to clarify their field of use and the role of each fiber in friction material. Friction and wear test reveals that GF composite has better wear resistance even though with low friction coefficient, comparing with MF composite. Glass fiber strengthen effectively the matrix and may absorb friction energy to convert it into the fracture energy of them, as well as its lubricative role. However, mineral fiber in MF composite is too small to strengthen the matrix. Then MF composite are easily plowed and worn out by asperity on counter material. Friction coefficient of MF composite is higher friction coefficient than that of GF composite and varied widely with test.
Tensile strength of the woven glass fiber reinforced PET (Poly-Ethylene-Terephthalate) matrix composite manufactured by rapid press consolidation technique was investigated and evaluated. During pre-heating, consolidation and solidification stages, the optimal manufacturing conditions for this composite were discussed based on the void content and tensile properties depending on vacuum condition. It is found that the effect of vacuum condition during preheating gives a substantial difference on the strength as well as microstructure. It is also found that the failure micromechanism shows several energy absorption processes enhancing fracture toughness.
In order to analyse the degradation process of epoxy/glass fiber for outdoor condition, FRP laminate was exposed to the wavelength of ultraviolet rays and evaluated by comparing contact angle, surface resistivity, surface potential decay, and ESCA spectrum respectively. As irradiation energy are increased, the surface properties were steeply decreased in the range of 300[nm]. But the measured values within the scope of400[nm]∼440[nm] showed a increase as compared with the untreated ones. Also, fromthe result of ESCA spectrum, it was confirmed plenty of oxygen groups on the spot showing the maximum decrease of surface properties and the existence of ether groups on the surface of coloring phase. We can conclude that the degradation phenomena on the surface of epoxy composites are dominated by the induction of ester and carboxyl groups.
