A calcareous rock slope failed during excavation of the slope for construction of a tunnel entrance. The slope is located at the construction site for widening highway in Yeongwol, Korea. Field surveys, laboratory tests, and numerical analyses were performed to determine the reason for the slope failure. The numerical analysis revealed that the safety factor of the slope before construction of the entrance was less than 1, and that this decreased after construction. After construction of the entrance, the sliding zone of the slope increased and slope stability decreased because the shear strain and plastic zone in the slope over the tunnel entrance showed an increase relative to the lower part of the slope. To enhance the stability of the slope for construction of the tunnel entrance, countermeasures such as rock bolts, rock anchors, and FRP (Fiber glass Reinforced Plastic) grouting were adopted in light of the field conditions. Serial field monitoring performed to confirm the reinforcing effects of the adopted countermeasures revealed a small amount of horizontal deformation of the slope soils, most of the elastic deformation that can regain its former value. In addition, the axial forces of the rock bolt and anchor were more strongly affected by slope excavation during construction of the tunnel entrance than by tunnel excavation or the rainy season, and the axial forces tended to converge after excavation of the tunnel. Therefore, we can confirm that the slope is currently safe.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate accuracy of three type complete mandibular denture of before and after polymerization. Methods: Mandibular edentulous model was selected as the master model. 15 study models were made by Type IV stone. Wax complete mandibular dentures were produced by the denture base and artificial teeth. Before and after curing, STL files were obtained using a blue scanner. By superimposing the digitized complete mandibular denture data(after curing) with the CAD-reference(before curing) three-dimensionally, visual fit-discrepancies were drawn by calculating the root mean square (RMS) and visualized on a color-difference map. Each calculated RMS-value was statistically analyzed by 1-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) (${\alpha}=.05$). Results: Mean(SD) RMS-values was OM group $88.98(6.10){\mu}m$, BM group $82.35(13.46){\mu}m$, BDM group $77.83(9.46){\mu}m$. The results of the 1-way ANOVA showed no statistically significant differences in the RMS values of the Three groups for the material (P > .241). Conclusion : Deformation of artificial teeth position was observed in all groups after resin polymerization. But the values, all group were within the clinically acceptable range. The values of BDM group showed the least deformation than the other two groups.

Thermosetting matrix composites have disadvantages in terms of moulding time, repairability and manufacturing cost. Thus the high-performance thermoplastic composites to eliminate such disadvantages have been developed so far. As a result of environmental and economical concerns, there is a growing interest in the use of thermoplastic composites. However, since their mechanical properties are very sensitive to the environment such as moisture, temperature etc., those behaviors need to be studied. Particularly the temperature is a very important factor influencing the mechanical behavior of thermoplastic composites. The effect of temperature have not yet been fully quantified. Since engineering applications of reinforced composites necessitate their fracture mechanics characterization, work is in progress to investigate the fracture and related failure behavior. An approach which predicts the tensile strength was perpormed in the tensile test. The main goal of this work is to study the effect of temperature on the result of tensile test with respect to GF/PE composite. The tensile strength and failure mechanisms of GF/PE composites were investigated in the temperature range $60^{\circ}C\;to\;-50^{\circ}C$. The tensile strength increased as the fiber volume fraction ratio increased. The tensile strength showed the maximum at $-50^{\circ}C$, and it tended to decrease as the temperature increased from $-50^{\circ}C$. The major failure mechanisms was classified into the fiber matrix debonding, the fiber pull-out, the delamination and the matrix deformation.
Adhesion and friction tests were carried out in order to investigate the effect of temperature on the tribological characteristics of poly (methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) film using AFM. The pull-off and friction forces on the PMMA film were measured under a high vacuum condition (below $1{\times}10^{-4}$ Pa) as the temperature of the PMMA film was increased from 300 K to 420 K (heating) and decreased to 300K (cooling). Friction tests were also conducted in both high vacuum and air conditions at room temperature. When the temperature was 420 K, which is 25 K higher than the glass transition temperature $(T_g)$ of PMMA, the PMMA film surface became deformable. Subsequently, the pull-off force was proportional to the maximum applied load during the pull-off force measurement. In contrast, when the temperature was under 395 K, the pull-off force showed no correlation to the maximum applied load. The friction force began to increase when the temperature rose above 370 K, which is 25 K lower than the $T_g$ of PMMA, and rapidly increased at 420 K. Decrease of the PMMA film stiffness and plastic deformation of the PMMA film were observed at 420 K in force-displacement curves. After the heating to 420 K, the fiction coefficient was measured under the air condition at room temperature and was found to be lower than that measured before the heating. Additionally, the RMS roughness increased as a result of the heating.

A state-based peridynamic model is able to describe a general constitutive model from the standard continuum theory. The response of a material at a point is dependent on the deformation of all bonds connected to the point within the nonlocal horizon region. Therefore, the state-based peridynamic model permits both the volume and shear changes of the material which is promising to reproduce the complicated dynamic brittle fracture phenomena, such as crack branching, secondary cracks, cascade cracks, crack coalescence, etc. In this paper, the two-dimensional state-based peridynamic model for a linear elastic plane stress solid is employed. The damage model incorporates the energy release rate and the peridynamic energy potential. For brittle glass materials, the impact of the crack-parallel compressive stress waves on the crack branching pattern is investigated. The peridynamic solution for this problem captures the main features, observed experimentally, of dynamic crack propagation and branching. Cascade cracks under strong tensile loading and secondary cracks are also well reproduced with the state-based peridynamic simulations.
Precision injection molding process is of great importance since precision optical products such as CD, DVD and various lens are manufactured by those process. In such products, birefringence affects the optical performance while residual stress that determines the geometric precision level. Therefore, it is needed to study residual stress and birefringence that affect deformation and optical quality, respectively in precision optical product. In the present study, we tried to predict residual stress, final shrinkage and birefringence in injection molded parts in a systematic way, and compared numerical results with the corresponding experimental data. Residual stress and birefringence can be divided into two parts, namely flow induced and thermally induced portions. Flow induced birefringence is dominant during the flow, whereas thermally induced stress is much higher than flow induced one when amorphous polymer undergoes rapid cooling across the glass transition region. A numerical system that is able to predict birefringence, residual stress and final shrinkage in injection molding process has been developed using hybrid finite element-difference method for a general three dimensional thin part geometry. The present modeling attempts to integrate the analysis of the entire process consistently by assuming polymeric materials as nonlinear viscoelastic fluids above a no-flow temperature and as linear viscoelastic solids below the no-flow temperature, while calculating residual stress, shrinkage and birefringence accordingly. Thus, for flow induced ones, the Leonov model and stress-optical law are adopted, while the linear viscoelastic model, photoviscoelastic model and free volume theory taking into account the density relaxation phenomena are employed to predict thermally induced ones. Special cares are taken of the modeling of the lateral boundary condition which can consider product geometry, histories of pressure and residual stress. Deformations at and after ejection have been considered using thin shell viscoelastic finite element method. There were good correspondences between numerical results and experimental data if final shrinkage, residual stress and birefringence were compared.

The lap splice lengths of deformed steel reinforcing bars and GFRP bars were experimentally compared using beam specimens. The purpose was to evaluate the length required of the GFRP bar to develop strength at least equivalent to the conventional steel reinforcing bar. The main test variable was the lap splice length: 10, 20, 30 $d_b$ for the deformed steel bars and 20, 30, 40 $d_b$ for the GFRP bars. Two different types of GFRP bars were tested: (1) one with spiral-type deformation and (2) plain round bars. Elastic modulus was about 1/5 of the steel bars while the tensile strength was about 690 MPa for the GFRP bars. Nominal diameter of the GFRP bars and steel bars was 12.7 and 13 mm, respectively. Normal strength concrete (28-day $f_{cu}$ = 30 MPa) was used. For the conventional steel bars (SD400 grade), strength over 400 MPa in tension was developed using the lap splice length of 20 and 30 $f_{cu}$. Only $87\%$ of the nominal yield strength was reached with the lap splice length of 10 $d_b$. For the spiral-type deformed GFRP bars with $40-d_b$ lap splice length, 440 MPa in tension was determined. The maximum tensile strength developed of the GFRP bars with smaller lap splice lengths decreased. The plain GFRP bar was not effective in developing the tensile strength even with $40-d_b$ lap splice length. Development of the cracks on beam surface was clearly visible for the beams reinforced with the GFRP bars. Mid-span deflections, however, were significantly smaller than the comparable beams with conventional steel bars indicating potential ductility problem.

Whereas The masonry buildings are safe under gravity loads, most of the masonry buildings in Korea have many structural defects under a lateral load due to an earthquake acceleration. But there is no earthquake resistant design code for the Masonry in Korea. Therefore it may be necessary to be set up an seismic code and be suggested for reinforcing methods for existing masonry buildings. The purpose of this paper is to investigate seismic capacity of reinforced masonry buildings subjected to earthquake load. The typical two models of the masonry building in Korea are selected through a site investigation. On the basis of test results, the fiber reinforcing effect of the two models was considerable. The maximum base shear force and deformation capacity for RM were remarkably increased. It was found that the pier rocking failure was a dominant mode for the RM buildings during a seismic excitation.

Recent developments in nanocrystalline and nanocomposite rare earth-transition metal magnets are reviewed and emphasis is placed on research work at IFW Dresden. Principal synthesis methods include high energy ball milling, melt spinning, mold casting and hydrogen assisted methods such as reactive milling and hydrogenation-disproportionation-desorption-recombination. These techniques are applied to NdFeB-, PrFeB- and SmCo-type systems with the aim to produce high remanence magnets with high coercivity. Concepts of maximizing the energy density in nanostructured magnets by either inducing a texture via anisotropic HDDR or hot deformation or enhancing the remanence via magnetic exchange coupling are evaluated. With respect to high temperature applications melt spun $Sm(Co_{0.74}Fe_{0.1}Cu_{0.12}Zr_{0.04})_{7.5}$ ribbons were prepared, which showed coercivities of up to 0.53 T at 50$0^{\circ}C$. Partially amorphous $Nd_{60}Fe_xCo_{30-x}Al_{10}(0{\leq}x{\leq}30)$ alloys were prepared by copper mold casting. The effect of transition metal content on the glass-forming ability and the magnetic properties was investigated. The $Nd_{60}Co_{30}Al_{10}$ alloy exhibits an amorphous structure shown by the corresponding diffraction pattern. A small substitution of Co by 2.5 at.% Fe results In the formation of Fe-rich crystallites embedded in the Nd-rich amorphous matrix. The Fe-rich crystallites show hard magnetic behaviour at room temperature with a coercivity value of about 0.4 T, relatively low saturation magnetization and a Curie temperature of 500 K.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact response behaviors of glass/epoxy laminated composite plates subjected to the transversely impact of a steel ball. For this purpose, dynamic finite element analysis based on the higher-order shear defomation plate theory is used to compute the contact forces, rebound velocity of a steel ball, and dynamic strain response histories. And low-velocity and high-velocity impact experiments were conducted to compare the results and compute the wave propagation velocities. The results obtained from impact experiments are in good agreement with those of dynamic finite element analysis. Also the wave propagation velocities obtained from high-velocity impact experiments and wave propagation theory agree well, and wave velocities were higher in the smaller radius of steel ball.
