  • Recent studies have clearly shown that the expression of genes for gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and its receptor in the rat reproductive organs including ovary, testis, placenta uterus and mammary gland. Moreover, luteinizing hormone (LH) classically known to be a main target product of GnRH in anterior pituitary has been found in rat gonads. These findings suggested the presence of local circuit composed of GnRH and LH in the rat gonads. The present study was undertaken to elucidate whether the genes for LH and its receptor are expressed in rat mammary gland. Expression of LH and its receptor genes in the rat mammary gland was demonstrated by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and specific LH radioimmunoassay (RIA). The LH${\beta}$ transcripts in the mammary gland from cycling rats contained the pituitary type of LH${\beta}$ exons 1~3 encoding the entire LH${\beta}$ polypeptide but lacked the rat testis-specific LH${\beta}$ exon(s). Presence of ${\alpha}$ -subunit transcripts in the rat mammary gland were determined by RT-PCR. The cDNA fragments encoding exons 2~7 of rat LH receptor transcripts were amplified in both rat ovary and mammary gland samples. We could detect the GnRH expression in mammary gland from cycling virgin rats, and this result disagreed with previous report that mammary GnRH expression is occured in lactating rats only. Considerable amounts of immunoreactive LH molecules with good RIA parallelism in standard curve were detected in crude extracts from the rat mammary gland, indicating that the immunoreactive LH materials in the gland might be identical to authentic pituitary LH. To our knowledge, the present study demonstrated for the first time the expression of LH subunits and LH receptor in the rat mammary gland. Our findings suggested that the mammary gland might be the novel source and target of LH and the mammary LH could be act as a local regulator with auto-and/or paracrine manner under the regulation of local GnRH.

  • Intraductal papilloma is a rare benign tumor reported to be primarily in minor salivary gland. There were few reports in parotid gland. A case of a 5-year-old boy with a palpable mass in the left parotid gland, with a review of the literature pertaining to this unusual case. A supeficial parotidectomy was performed under impression of benign or congenital lesion. Histopathologic diagnosis of intraductal papilloma was made on the surgical specimen. Authors report a intraductal papilloma arising from the parotid gland in childhood.

  • Basal cell adenoma (BCA) of the parotid gland is a rare benign tumor. In the parotid gland, BCA is occasionally difficult distinguish from adenoid cystic carcinoma in terms of clinical and pathological perspectives. An adenoid cystic carcinoma of the parotid gland grows slowly but spreads persistently to the surrounding tissues, particularly along the perineural spaces. In the present case, BCA of the parotid gland was misdiagnosed as an adenoid cystic carcinoma. We discuss the reason for such a misdiagnosis, and present a method for making a correct diagnosis.

  • The histochemical, cytochemical, and immunocytochemical investigations were conducted to find out the cellulase activity in the accessory glands of the digestive system of the oriental land snail Nesiohelix samarangae under the LM, SEM, and TEM. The cellulase activity was shown in the epithelium of th digestive gland by labelling with the immunogold (protein-A gold) particles. The epithelial cells showing the cellulase activity were Type 1 and Type 3 cells out of five types of the epithelial cells of the digestive gland. None of epithelial cells of the mucus gland and the salivary gland and the salivary gland were not labeled with the immunogold particles.

  • Benign nonepithelial tumors of the thyroid gland are very rare and include lesions such as vascular tumors, smooth muscle tumors and neurogenic tumors. Schwannoma and neurofibroma are benign neoplasms of mesenchymal origin which frequently occur in the head and neck, but their origin within the thyroid gland has rarely been reported. Recently, we encountered two cases of neurogenic tumor of thyroid gland(l schwannoma, 1 neurofibroma) and report them to support the view that Schwannoma and neurofibroma may occur in thyroid gland, which is an unusual site, and are recognizable entities.

  • Tuberculosis of parotid gland is extremely rare, even in countries where tuberculosis is endemic. It can occur by systemic dissemination from a distant focus or as primary involvement. Because of the clinical and radiological similarity, parotid tumor and parotid inflammatory disease take priority over the tuberculosis of parotid when it comes to differential diagnosis. As a result, clinicians often fail to make a timely diagnosis of tuberculosis of parotid gland in patient with a slowly growing parotid mass. However, its treatment is primarily medical if the positive diagnosis is well established. We have recently experienced a case of tuberculosis of parotid gland that was considered as the benign tumor preoperatively, but which was confirmed as tuberculosis of parotid gland after extracapsular dissection. We report it with a review of literature.

  • The morphological and immunohistochemical characteristics of the adrenal gland of the lion(Panthera leo) have been studied. In the light microscopic level, the adrenal gland was surrounded by thick capsules arid weak development of the zona glomerulosa was detected. Some medullary tissues were directly connected with capsules, however the adrenal gland in the lion 'demonstrated somewhat pseudolobulated appearance. Weakly or strongly stained chromogranin-immunoreactive cells were detected in medullary regions of the adrenal gland of the lion by immunohistochemistry, and weakly stained chromogranin-immunoreactive cells were detected more frequent than strongly stained ones.

  • Sclerosing polycystic adenosis(SPA) is a pathology of salivary gland which occurs infrequently. It has a controversial etiology. It is a recently described and extremely rare disease entity. Its reactive, sclerosing and inflammatory process is similar to fibrocystic changes and adenosis tumor of breast. Most cases has been reported to be occurred within major salivary glands. This disease is frequently confused with other salivary gland carcinomas, especially because of its histomorphological similarity. Here, we report a case of SPA within the submandibular gland in a 62-year-old woman.

  • Histochemical and ultrastructural studies on the salivary gland and salivary duct of a land snail Nesiohelix samarangae were conducted to observe structural characteristics and function. The salivary gland consisted of one type of epithelial cell, one type of supporting cell, and six types of gland cells. Four out of six gland cell types were histochemically identified on these secretions. The one secreted acid mucopolysaccharide and the other three secreted neutral mucopolysaccharide. The salivary duct epithelium had only one type of columnar cell with microvilli on its luminal surface. The basal protoplasmic membranes of the epithelial cells were deeply infolded so many times all along the cell bases.

  • Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma on the parotid gland is a relatively rare occurrence among head and neck tumors. The mass of parotid gland lymphoma cannot be distinguished from other benign masses of the parotid gland; therefore, it is important to consider lymphoma in the differential diagnosis when examining parotid swellings and masses. Parotid gland lymphoma is most likely to be B-cell, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of one of three types, which include follicular, marginal zone, and diffuse large B-cell, although other histologic patterns have been described. We present a review of a patient with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) who presented to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Pusan National University Hospital (Yangsan, Korea).
