Development a Curriculum of the Elementary Gifted Children of Information Science for the Basic Course of Science Education Institute for the Gifted (과학영재교육원 기초반을 위한 초등 정보과학영재 교육과정 개발)

  • This paper focused on developing the curriculum for elementary children who are gifted in information science as follows. First, this paper dealt the contents of the scientific school attached to universities for gifted children. Second, this paper abstracted educational elements for the gifted children from the research of the information science course in current education. Third, for applying curriculum for the elementary children who are gifted in information science to practical education efficiently, the contents were classified into many steps. Fourth, this paper developed the annual curriculum for the elementary children who are gifted in information science.

  • The researcher conducts the following research to correctly identify the gifted children of science information. First, the researcher makes sufficient theoretic research on gifted children for the sake of definition and identification of the gifted children of information science, and reconstructed the identification principles, factors and procedures of the gifted children of information science on the basis of those of the gifted children of math and science the theories of a number of scholars and presented new methods of identifying new gifted children of information science. Second, the researcher set the identification procedures of the gifted children of information science and the relevant content and conducted the identification of gifted children through the observation and evaluation of sixth graders through three stages. Third, the researcher compares and analyzed the selected gifted children based on the identification procedures and ordinary groups of students excellent in math and science in terms of task achievement and looked into validity.

Correlation Analysis of Information Subject and Science Subject for the Gifted Children in IT (정보영재아동의 정보과목과 과학과목의 상관관계 분석)

  • Currently gifted education aims for convergent gifted education according to government policy. The purpose of this paper is to investigate correlation of information subject and science subject(physics, chemistry, biology, and geology) for the gifted children in IT. For this purpose, the gifted children in IT who attended a gifted science education center attached to a university at Seoul Metropolitan Area are selected. Their grades during their the period of attendance are collected and analysed. The statistical results show that there is a meaningful correlation between information subject and biology subject for the gifted children in IT. It means that the higher scores information subject is, the higher scores biology subject is. The results can be used to make or change gifted curriculum and education contents for gifted IT education.

  • There are many studies about cognitive and non-cognitive characteristics of gifted children in the areas of math and science until now. Also, there is a lot of research for about cognitive and non-cognitive characteristics of gifted children. But, it lacks a lot of research on the characteristics of gifted children for information science area. So, characteristics of gifted children in the areas of information science are defined as structured information recall ability, regularization ability, reasoning ability, efficiency ability, structured ability, generalization ability, and abstract ability. And real problems for each ability are proposed. To make the evaluation questions proposed in this study on the cognitive gifted characteristics when compared with student achievement and prove that there is a correlation. The results of this study can be utilized in the evaluation of information giftedness children and can be utilized in the development of gifted education programs.

  • In the knowledge-based society, IT literacy and application of a person become a measure of personal competitiveness. As IT industry is of great important nationally, many countries are trying to make an effort to promote IT industry. In this sense, identification and fostering of the gifted children in IT become an important national task since, in IT industry, usually only a few prodigies have led whole IT industry. Currently gifted education aims for convergent gifted education according to government policy.   • In current knowledge-based society, development and growth of IT-related industry is essential for a nation's competitiveness since it's economic power depends on IT industry in many countries. A success of IT industry depends on a few IT geniuses like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. Thus, it is necessary to identify and foster gifted children in IT as early as possible. The purpose of this paper is to identify the correlation of academic performance per subject for the gifted children in IT. The analysis is focused on three subjects, that is, Information, Science, and Mathematics, respectively. For this purpose, the gifted children are selected and analyzed in a gifted science education center attached in a university at Seoul Metropolitan Area. The analysis results show that there is meaningful correlation among three subjects. That is, if high scores in a subject means high scores in other subjects. For instance, a gifted child with high scores in Information got high scores in Science and Mathematics. The result will be useful to improve selection examinations and curriculum for gifted education in IT, for inclusive education and convergent education.

  • It is needed to make more efforts to activate the gifted child education in elementary information science regarding selection of the gifted, development of appropriate curriculum, however, as a saying goes that a quality of education is depended on teacher's quality, and outstanding performance of teachers in charge of teaching the gifted is critical to make education for the gifted in elementary information science successful. Considering the significances of teacher variances, the research on the professionality of teacher who is responsible for the elite education in elementary information science should be made, along with a plan to cultivate their competence.

  • In the current information-based society, information and communication technology(ICT) is very important for an individual, a society, and a nation. Especially, for a nation, ICT-related industries are forming an important part of a nation's economy. Also, unlike other industries, ICT-related industries do not require various infrastructures, and have an advantage of being developed with a few talented persons in a short period of time. In this sense, identification and education of gifted children in IT become an essential task of a nation's future. In the past, selection of the gifted children was based on paper tests. However, paper tests incurred various side effects such as private education. Since 2013, observation-recommendation system instead of paper tests has been fully adopted. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the validity of observation-recommendation admission system of the gifted children in IT. For this research purpose, the gifted children in gifted science education center attached in a university at Seoul become the focus of the samples. Their entrance score ranking and graduation record raking are compared for analysis of validity of admission system. After statistical analysis, there is a meaningful correlation between entrance score ranking and graduation record ranking for the gifted children in IT. It means that the higher entrance score ranking, the higher graduation record ranking. The analysis results are expected to be valuable baseline data for deciding usefulness of observation-recommendation admission system.

A Modular Integrated Curriculum Model for the Gifted Information Children (초등정보영재아들을 위한 모듈형 교육과정 모델)

  • Even though there are many models for educational curriculum of giftedness for children, there is little model for educational methodology and curriculum of information science giftedness of children. A curriculum model for information science giftedness of children is proposed on this study. This model's characteristics is a modular integrated curriculum model combined the mathematics, natural science, and information science. Because there is no regular curriculums of information science at elementary school. this model is valided. Also, There is also need to train multiple areas in the field of information science to expose information science giftedness of the children, This model is to minimize the relationship between modules, and to maximize the cohesion in the each module. As for result of statistics analysis for 60 giftedness students during three years, we know the effectiveness of this model.

  • In order to secure the national competitiveness in the 21st century's frontier knowledge-based information and globalized society, Korea also needs programs to pick out advanced human resources early and educate them systematically. Therefore the education for the gifted in the information science area is very important, in response to the highly developed Information society, nationally, science-gifted education institutes attached to colleges and several institutions for gifted education have selected and educated the gifted in information science. Therefore, this study is intended to survey local elementary school teachers' awareness on elementary information education for gifted and talented students carried out in jeju by the Education Center for Science Gifted and Talented Students of jeju National University and other education institutions for gifted and talented students in the region and thereby suggest strategies for improvement of the education.
