  • Soil structures which are constructed over the soft ground settle continuously by the self-weight of embankment for a long time. It is because of timetependent behaviours . consolidation and creep occurring simultaneously. This paper tries to determine the required parameters for analysis of the creep behaviour in marine clays and studied the effect of the confining stress and stress level on the creep parameters . As a result, it presents an equation for the determination of creep parameters according to stress level considering that elastic modulus El and creep parameter f are found to be affected by the applied stress level.

  • In this study, a series of flat dilatometer tests are performed for Busan sand reconstituted in a large calibration chamber to evaluate the state parameter ($\Psi$). Experimental result shows that the horizontal amplification factor ($K_D/K_0$) is linearly related with state parameter in semi-logarithmic space, but the $K_D/K_0$ of OC specimen is smaller than that of NC specimen because of the horizontal residual stress by stress history of OC specimen. The relation between the normalized dilatometer modulus ($E_D/\sigma_m'$) and the state parameter is also linearly expressed in semi-logarithmic space, and the effect of stress history is relatively insignificant in this relation. However, the variation in $E_D/\sigma_m'-\Psi$ relation of NC state is slightly higher than that of OC state due to the effect of the stress level, and the correlation curve is descending with increase of confining stress. The comparison of test result with previous results of Ticino and Toyoura sands shows that the $E_D/\sigma_m'-\Psi$ relation of Toyoura sand is located on upper side than that of Busan and Tieino sands due to the effect of the higher compressibility, whereas the $K_D/K_0-\Psi$ relation of each sand is irregularly distributed.

  • The void ratio is an important parameter for reflecting the soil behavior including physical property, compressibility, and relative density. The void ratio can be obtained by laboratory test with extracted soil samples. However, the specimen has a possibility to be easily disturbed due to the stress relief when extracting, vibration during transportation, and error in experimental process. Thus, the theoretical equations have been suggested for obtaing the void ratio based on the elastic wave velocities. The objective of this paper is to verify the accuracy of the proposed analytical solution through the error norm. The paper covers the theoretical methods of Wood, Gassmann and Foti. The elastic wave velocity is determined by the Field Velocity Probe in the southern part of Korean Peninsular. And the rest parameters are assumed based on the reference values. The Gassmann method shows the high reliability on determining the void ratio. The error norm is also analyzed as substitution of every parameter. The results show every equation has various characteristics. Thus, this paper may be widely applied for obtaining the void ratio according to the field condition.

  • The lateral soil movement in soft grounds undergoing improvement with application of vertical drains is analyzed on the basis of monitoring data at three fields, in which fifty six monitoring sites are located. Based on the investigations, the criterions are suggested to predict the lateral soil movement. In order to predict the lateral soil movement in the improved soft grounds by using the dimensionless parameter R suggested by Marche & Chapuis (1974), it is desirable that the maximum lateral displacement in the soft ground below the toe of embankment should be applied to calculate R instead of the lateral displacement at the toe of embankment. The lateral soil movement may increase rapidly, if the safety factor of slope is less than 1.4 in case of high ratio of H/B (Thickness of soft ground/Embankment width) such as 1.15 or is less than 1.2 in case of low ratio of H/B such as 0.05. Also, the graph suggested by Tschebotarioff (1973), which illustrates the relationship between the maximum height of embankments and the undrained shear strength of soft grounds, can be applied to the evaluation for the possibility of the lateral soil movement due to embankments on soft grounds.

  • The probabilistic keyblock concept which was based upon block theory was applied to the example site by using the observed block moulds data. The more was the block failure likelihood (P(B)) which was defined by the product of the joint combination probability, the shape parameter and the instability parameter, the more were the frequencies of failures observed. If we can acquire these data during a tunnel construction stage, they will be used as a very useful data to construct another tunnel in the neighborhood. Furthermore, a sedimentary rock may have larger P(B) values than a crystalline rock, and for the given P(B) value, the percent block moulds are larger in the former than latter.

  • Several isotropic compression-expansion tests and a series of drained conventional traxial tests with various confining pressures for relative density of Beakma river sand 25%, 50%, 80% and 100% selecting Lade's Single Work-Hardening constitutive model. This examination materials use regression analysis as a basis, depending on the relative density of soil parameters change statement attributes. Yield fuction represent the soil parameters h and $\alpha$ is not affected by the changes in the relative density. $\eta_1$ could be replaced by fomula. And Numerical analysis results predicted very good and could confirm that.

  • The Bieniawski's geomechanics classification system(1984) is widely employed as a tool of engineering evaluation of rock masses for tunnel design. Since the siz parameters adoped in the system are believed to control the engineering behavior of rock mass under an external load, no question may be raised to the conceptional idea immanent in the system. However, the rating grade for each individual parameter given in the system may be properly measured since an engineering property of rock mass is not stepwise changed but continuously changed. In order to get the proper rating grade based upon the continuously changed properties in each parameter, several equations presented in this paper are obtained through regration analyses with the grades and median values of properties givne in the system. A FORTRAN computer program given in the paper could provide not only RMR value but also rock mass properties (E, c, o, v, etc.) using the empirical equations.

  • `Frost heave' is volumetric extension behavior of soil due to freezing. It could have a bad effect to foundations of infrastructures like building, road, railroad and bridge. Therefore, it is considered as a primary design parameter with 'adfreeze bond' and 'creep deformation' for foundation design in cold region. In some countries, studies for analyzing frost heave in many ways have being performed, however, only a few studies for evaluating frost susceptibility of soils by measuring frost heave rate of frozen soils in Korea. For analyzing frost heave as a foundation design parameter, both frost heaving rate and heaving pressure are should be addressed in study. Hence, in this study, development of experimental apparatus to evaluate frost heave and pressure is suggested.

  • The percentage of a mountainous district in our country is comparatively high but the concern for rock mass has been disregarded for a long time. Especially for rock slope, the most important factors are geometric characteristics and their shear strength parameter. In this paper, parametric studies are performed using the distinct element computer program UDEC-BB for rock slopes. Parameters adopted in this paper are joint angle, spacing, persistence, aperture and shear strength parameters (JRC, JCS, basic friction angle). To estimate slope stability, shear strength reduction method is used. The most important factors affecting rock slope stability are joint angle and spacing. The relationship between average displacement calculated by UDEC-BB and safe factor by shear strength reduction method is researched.

  • This paper introduces a practical determination method for soil parameters adopted in the new performance based design code for port and harbour facilities in Japan. In the new port-design code, the depth profile of the derived values is modeled as the profile of the estimated values so as to be either the mean value or the regression line, then the correction factors are multiplied to the estimated value according to the coefficient of variation (if COV > 0.1) and the number of the data entries (if n < 10). The new port-design code is applied to the unconfined compression test results for the Hiroshima Port clay in order to evaluate the undrained shear strengths. From the discussion, it is emphasized that not only the statistic treatment but also the engineering judgment are required in the procedure of the soil parameter determination for the reliability design.
